NBEMS Exercises often reveal more specific band condx details. Tonight, OFDM-750F CONFIRMED two stations in a single transmission. OFDM-750F is a fast mode, 720+WPM, that needs favorable propagation. The two CONFIRMED stations, Don KJ7VGV & Brad WA7HHE, are in a direct line, about 120deg, from NCS. The only station to CONFIRM PSK-250RC2 is also in the same direction, about 135deg from NCS. All but two of the remaining stations CONFIRMED MFSK-32, as usual. Although we have two doublets, one roughly N/S, the other E/W, NCS is always on the N/S antenna, a 210′ doublet @ 80′. Oddly, MFSK-32 failed to CONFIRM one station exactly on the 120deg path and equidistant from NCS and one station a few degrees South of 120deg and further from NCS. The differences are likely due to terrain and/or antenna performance. Doug K7KY ran a bit off the rails tonight when Mike K7MSS stumbled; no aspersions on Mike, he’s doing well with a complex learning task.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Randy K7HUH in Roseburg,OR. Randy is one of our Oregon ARES District 5 Net colleagues. We’re delighted to have him aboard. A number of our D5 colleagues checked in a couple years ago, but their interest coincided with Winter’s loss of short skip. They’re all relatively close to us and connecting was marginal. ORCA flow and content can be initially challenging in the best band condx.

We did very well with the Path Evaluation Macro in the Comment Round, and we’re doing well with Macros in general. We may need to revisit a couple Macro exercises for the benefit of recent incoming stations, particularly the daisy-chaining exercises. Doug K7KY made a mistake in tonight’s Macro exercise instructions. He asked you to send the Comment Round images, but we actually intended to publish those images as we received them here. It’s quite a bit more work to publish all the images collected by Active Ops in Comments. We apologize for the bother of sending so many images. We’ll publish those we copied as planned.

We’re still working to smooth the transition from working NBEMS Exercises silently to Active participation. The common stumbling block is the challenge of tracking net flow while completing various Exercise tasks. On-air has more time pressure than working while Monitoring. Once dual-focus becomes routine, the Exercises are much easier. Lamar AE6LJ has an excellent tactic for learning dual-focus. He picked an Active veteran and simulated working the Exercise in that station’s shadow. He imagines he’s that station and prepares to reply whenever that station is called. It simulates conditions you’ll face when working the Exercises live. Try Lamar’s tactic and let us know if you find it, or a variation, helpful.

Guest NCS conduct our NBEMS Exercise the 1st Tuesday every month. Next month, on 07/Feb/23, Bruno KG7VVN will conduct the Exercise. We began this project early last year. Bruno and Don KJ7VGV volunteered and helped us develop NBEMS Exercise instructions and macros. Now, the instructions are well sorted and they’re conducting Exercises like veterans. Please consider conducting NBEMS Exercises yourself. It’s a manageable step toward full NCS duties and a satisfying accomplishment in itself.

We’ve been focused on finding more NCS for Western Digital Net, but the truth is we need them for emergency situations no matter which net. Both nets are supported by the same network of digital Ops. That’s us. Currently, we have 4 digital Net Control Stations. In an extended emergency, we’ll need to relieve them. Four more is our goal. If you’re interested, there are numerous paths available. An easy 1st step is conducting the ORCA Comment Round as Guest NCS. Let us know if you’d like to run an ORCA Comment Round. We’ll help you with Macros, and of course, back you up.

Last week, we ran a Macro Exercise instead of file-handling in the NBEMS Exercise. It went well. We have sufficient Macro knowledge to write Macros on-the-fly. We’ll add a Macro Exercise to the NBEMS Exercises now & then to keep them interesting and useful.

^rANNOUNCEMENTS 10th Anniversary, 24/Jan/23

We’ve been reflecting on ORCA history and scanning old logs lately. Many of you will recall the days before Western Digital Net. Steve
K6ETA worked with us for years before developing WDN. It was an inspired move and a natural spin-off from ORCA. Similar to ORCA,
he developed the net and website as a unit. A challenging task, well executed. When Steve couldn’t continue as NCS in 2021, a few Ops
stepped in to keep the net afloat. Today, only two Ops still support WDN, Don KJ7VGV and Jaye KE6SLS. When Steve first left, 4 Ops
stepped up. Now, only two.

We’ve been talking with the Oregon RRI Hub Manager. When he reviewed the ORCA website and saw the mainpage map, he remarked
that we already have an extensive network. Bingo! He’s right. We have members in nearly all western US states. Many of our members
belong to local ARCs and some lead local EMCOMM groups. ORCA’s max Ck-In is 41. WDN’s max Ck-In is 17. Both nets are supported
by the same stations.

ORCA DIGITAL NET and Western Digital Net are two sides of the same coin. A network of like minded Amateur digital Operators, we’re
the energy and potential of this coin. We train & practice on ORCA and exchange information and pass traffic on WDN; a natural and
efficient pairing. In essence, we’re a singularity. It’s in our interest to sustain both nets, two portals of the same network.

The Amateur Radio Clubs represented on our nets are undeveloped associations and natural partners. We routinely work with Ops
representing ARCs and local training nets. We can formalize these associations, engendering back’n forth exchange of training, exercises,
macros, operating tactics, etc. WDN would handle traffic between local/regional Ops. We could easily service numerous western US
UHF/VHF digital nets. WDN would host Liaison representatives from the local nets. Liaison Ops are routine for Traffic nets. Before
seeking Liaison Ops for a RRI/NTS Hub, we would first establish links with local ARC nets. It would strengthen our network and better
position us for an uncertain future.

If you’re considering supporting WDN as rotating NCS, you can begin learning with less effort by taking small first steps. Partner with
Don KJ7VGV or Jaye KE6SLS to conduct the Comment Round. It’s among the easiest event for NCS. You call Active Ops in order from
the Roster and have the opportunity to reply to their comments if you like. It’s an interesting net event, perfect for entry-level NCS
experience. Partialize the task by learning in stages. No worries about mistakes or station issues, your NCS partner has your back. Give it
some thought; ORCA & WDN are equally vital to our network. Two aspects of one network.

Tonight, we’ll again use our Path Evaluation Macro in the Comment Round. Active stations will send this Macro during Comments. You
can send the regular ORCAtest image, or the 10th Anniversary image, as you like. Use your Comment Macro and Path Evaluation Macro
together. Alter them to send image and comments in a single transmission. If you don’t have a Comment Macro, add your comments to
the Path Macro. If you’re not up-to-speed w/Macros, no worries, send your comments as usual.

Please email the Comment Round images along with the beginning/end images. We’ll see how NCS copies the Active stations. If you’ve
joined us recently, you may need to catch up w/Macros. If you need help, contact us: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com, or one of the ORCA
veterans.

FB & tnx 4 ur patience & thx to Mike 4 his patience too… we can see how easily these exercises run off the tracks.. at this end,
there’s quite a bit to do and keep in mind as the Exercise flows it takes very littel as you can see to derail NCS it’s a challenging
exercise all around btn < K7KY

Tnx Doug… Always intriguing to see how well (or not) each mode is RX. OFDM-750 was
good for some, PSK-250RC didn’t do well and needs better band condx. MFSK-32 is
mostly solid as always.

Sending Pic:140×140;Still lots of snow on the ground but when you get up to barely above freezing in the day, it’s going to stick around
for awhile. Almost done with an upgrade to the solar system at the cabin. Expanded the system by 300%, with a back up to the battery
system as well. Dark days ahead. Hoping for warmer weather.

Interesting thing when OFDM was Tx I had to move the squelch level bar on the WF up and down to match your signal (to keep it in
green range) and was able to copy 100% maybe it was coincidence?

Lot’s of sunshine last few days. Been great seeing my battery that
powers all this stuff in my radio shack, full capacity!

The 75-80m band has been amazing the last 4-5 days! Normally I see
short skip vanish by 7:30pm, but lately, I’ve been on at 10pm and still
hear great signals at 100 watts. Looks like tonight’s band will also
be good copy for us!

In the last 55 hours, numerous mass shootings. January is off to a
negative start. Those who are lost are our working class heroes. I
think we all need to think about being POSITIVE. Helping our neighbors
and caring for our communities and providing a positive model of
human beings. My heart breaks for all the affected families & friends.

Amazing how we can RERAIL a net :) Good work everyone!

Now looking forward to homemade Ruben sandwich!

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Randy K7HUH in Roseburg,OR. We’ll ask Randy to review the Quick-Start Guide @ our website:
http://orcadigitalnet

For those interested in working NBEMS Exercises, working silently while Monitoring and checking your work in after-net Monitor’s
Session is the best way to learn and practice b4 going live. With some practice, they’re not difficult, but they’re not easy to learn in a
couple sessions.

Nice work combining our Path Evaluation Macro w/Comments. We’re doing well w/Macros. Tnx to everyone who sent Rec’Reports.

FB Brad… You have the right Elmer for WDN NCS duties. I know you’ll do fine & tnx for stepping in to help Don & Jaye @ WDN.

We’ll look for Rainbows Canyon ARC N7U this weekend’s Winter FD. BTN < Doug K7KY

SHORTWAVE RADIOGRAM

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
