Band condx were the best this year for our closing session. OFDM-500F confirmed 6 of 10 stations in a single transmission. A very credible performance for a 480+/WPM-500hz mode. Two stations, 1/Utah, 1/Nevada, reported No Copy at all. These two stations usually copy well and are easy to Fill. What gives? OFDM often works perfectly for some stations and not-at-all for others. It’s very sensitive to multi-path, fading, and other HF issues. It’s not unusual to have some Ops CONFIRM OFDM and others report No copy. When it works, it’s fast. OFDM-750F is 2x 500F.

Thank you for working the final session of ORCA DIGITAL NET. Ten stations worked the NBEMS Exercise perfectly. The entire net unfolded w/o a glitch. Mindy W7ZAP wrapped our 11yrs of service very nicely. In our earliest days, Mindy was a participant until she began conducting NBEMS Exercises. That was the beginning of our dual NCS routine. Later, a shop explosion injured my right hand, resulting in partial amputation of my middle finger. I couldn’t type for 2mos and then had to retrain my right hand to type w/no help from Stubby. Mindy took over and ran the net and NBEMS Exercise. For her, it was a trial by fire. Her first session was our biggest Roster to date. I needed two operations and 3mos to recover. Since that event, we’ve solidified our dual NCS routines.

We’re fortunate to have two excellent doublets. Our other advantage was owning two Yaesu FT-857Ds. Yaesu tech-support assured us they would tolerate us both on the same frequency if we didn’t exceed 35w. We’ve run ORCA @ 35w since the outset. Our antennas offset low TX power. In the last Solar Cycle we logged stations as far East as Philadelphia. Today, Kansas & Missouri seem to be our limit. Working together, we developed numerous routines to keep the net flowing when one of us had a problem. We learned to switch NCS quickly so NCS transition was seamless.

Not long after refining our dual-NCS routines, I noticed Mindy working additional tasks into our routines. Most were invisible to the net, but didn’t escape my attention. She had learned our routines so well, she had time to focus on other things like email back’n forth with members, detailed reception reports, notes and observations during net operations, real-time results of NBEMS Exercises, etc. If you noticed any of this when she was NCS, you would have also noticed me doing none of these things. I don’t have spare attention during nets; it’s committed to the routines I’ve learned and I’ve little spare attention for more tasks. So, my Elmerette quickly mastered what I’d taught her and began extending and embellishing her role. I’m both impressed w/how quickly she learned NCS routines, but more so by her capacity to grasp the job quickly and then develop refinements. She has a large part in ORCA’s development and execution. Her contribution to ORCA is immeasurable. No surprise really, she use to colorize old films and worked in Video production master control. No wonder she eclipsed me.

The same can be said for so many ORCA members. Their contribution is immeasurable. As a group, none exceed the support by Rainbows Canyon ARC in Cedar City,Utah. They’ve been with us for 8+yrs and in the early days accounted for a third to half our weekly Roster. RCARC is the most active and engaged ARC associated w/ORCA. They’ve had significant influence on ORCA; they’re our strongest & longest supporting ARC. So many individual members also supported ORCA development I would certainly leave many out by trying to list them. Without the enthusiasm and support of our membership, we would not have succeeded. The membership is the network. Mindy & I organized the initial structure; the members supported and sustained revisions that led to our current format.

Some comments about transitioning the NBEMS Exercise to WDN impel me to review a little more ORCA history. More recent members may see Western Digital Net as separate from ORCA, but that’s not the case. ORCA Ops were engaged with Steve K6ETA in WDN’s development from the outset. We knew we needed an actual Traffic net; Steve did an outstanding job developing the net and website. It was supported by ORCA Ops from the outset and today’s Rosters are usually close to 100% ORCA Ops. It was never separate from ORCA. When Steve departed, he told us to do with WDN as we like. He hoped we would sustain it. WDN belongs to the same network of Ops that sustained and improved ORCA for 11yrs.

Today, Jaye KE6SLS, Don KJ7VGV, & Brad WA7HHE are WDN Net Control Stations. We’ve sustained WDN since Steve left with insufficient staff. Three Ops cover 4-5 sessions/month. With ORCA closed, WDN is our only portal. It belongs to our network. The three NCS sorely need help. They’ve done well to keep WDN alive, but transitioning to a single portal will increase their workload; they’ll need your support and assistance. If you’re reluctant to NCS, consider conducting NBEMS Exercises, it’s easier. We have a training program for Exercise NCS. Don and Bruno KG7VVN are the 1st graduates. They’ve been conducting NBEMS Exercises on ORCA all year. You’re already familiar and comfortable with FLDIGI, FLMSG, & FLAMP. Learn a couple different routines for these apps and you’re gud2go. Give it some thought. We can sustain our training momentum on WDN with network support and a couple volunteers. It’s well worth the bother.

RE: Transcontinental Digital Test Net. We may have been hasty in thinking that collaborating with our Eastern digital colleagues would result in a mutual exchange of NBEMS traffic-handling routines and tactics. They configure and employ the NBEMS suite different than we do. So far, we’ve not established mutual dialogue about how & why we & they conduct digital training nets. Hopefully this will change over time and we’ll develop an East/West Peer2Peer relationship. Their intent to develop a Nationwide net is a worthy project. We wish them well and we’ll assist them as we can.

Thank you once again for your participation, support, and friendship. We really enjoyed conducting ORCA DIGITAL NET these past 11yrs. We couldn’t have done it without you. For us, it’s been a labor of love. We would continue if we could. We intend to continue working as teammates. The need for digital networking and traffic-handling training is increasing. There’s much yet to be done. Let’s do it together.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise features FLMSG Form ICS-213. Doug K7KY is Exercise NCS. Tonight is also the final session of ORCA DIGITAL NET.
2013-2024.

Mindy W7ZAP: ORCA has been, by far, my most rewarding experience in Amateur Radio. I’m grateful for everyone I’ve met and had the
pleasure to work with over the past 11 yrs. I’ve learned so much from this net; 1st as a participant, eventually running the weekly NBEMS
Exercise, then stepping up to NCS duties when Doug injured his hand. At the time I had no desire to NCS, but it was a thrill to be able to fill in
with Doug’s assistance getting me ready.

A huge thank you to all of you for your friendship, Elmering, and participation. I’m excited about WDN and what’s on the horizon. I look
forward to continuing my digital EMCOMM training. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year. It feels like 2024 will be a year
with lot’s of changes.

Doug K7KY: ORCA DIGITAL NET is the most rewarding project of my Amateur experience. We’ve made an uncountable number of friends.
It’s hard to hang up our NCS hats. Some of you have been with us for years. We wouldn’t have succeeded without you. All of you. Together,
we developed an outstanding digital training net. As we grew and progressed, we moved beyond the basic routines of traffic-handling into a
more nuanced exploration of band condx, Mode characteristics, Macros, reading comprehension, situational awareness, multi-task focus,
PC/software troubleshooting, and undocumented routines and tactics. Our recent encounter with Eastern digital operations reveals the extent
of our learning. We’ve accomplished a lot together and there’s more to do. ORCA DIGITAL NET & Western Digital Net are two faces of one
network. We can easily sustain our network with one portal. Our network has the will and momentum to continue learning and practicing
digital networking routines and tactics.

We’ve moved beyond the basic knowledge and skills necessary to process digital traffic to refined tactics and routines not defined in operating
Manuals. We’ve explored digital Modes over 11yrs of varying band condx; we know which Modes will perform best in current condx. Time
pressure built into NBEMS Exercises helped us learn to work quickly and efficiently. Here too we differ from our Eastern colleagues. We’ve
learned to work quickly/correctly under pressure. Practicing with a little time pressure, we’ll be more comfortable in emergencies than if we
practiced slowly. When you’re capable of working fast, working a slow net is easy. Training & Practicing slowly doesn’t prepare us to work
quickly when time is critical. Slow training and practice develops slow Operators.

We’re standing down because we must. Our home/family responsibilities and ORCA duties exceed our capacity. We intend to remain active.
We hope you won’t lose focus. Our network is ready to work emergencies. We’ve done it twice. Is there more to learn? W/o doubt, there’s
much more to learn and practice. We’ll continue learning and practicing on WDN. Be patient with WDN NCS, they’re understaffed with a lot on
their plate. They need your support and participation. WDN is currently the only Western digital traffic net. Jaye KE6SLS, Don KJ7VGV, & Brad
WA7HHE are sustaining WDN. Adding a training event to WDN will complete it’s agenda. ORCA is structured to switch to an Emergency net as
needed. WDN is the same network of Ops; transition to Emergency operations will also be easy.

Besides your participation and support, WDN needs actual working help. 3 Ops are covering 4-5 sessions every month. They need two more
NCS. Yes, it’s challenging work, but not beyond your capacity. Like all complex tasks, it’s best learned in steps. Conducting NBEMS Exercises is
easier to learn and includes most NCS duties. We already have a training program. You need only learn a few different routines for FLDIGI,
FLMSG, & FLAMP; applications you know & use every week. Contact us or a WDN NCS to get started.

Having WDN replace ORCA in the Tuesday time/freq slot needs careful consideration by everyone, not just the core workers. Our personal
day/time schedules differ. ORCA routinely logs twice the Ops on Tues as WDN does on Thurs. We’re uncertain why, but we can speculate that
fewer Ops are free on Thursday or WDN isn’t as interesting w/o training. Other factors are likely. If more Ops can participate on Tues, then
Tues is a better night for WDN. If it’s just the lack of training, adding training events will increase WDN participation on Thursday. ORCA is
11yrs established on Tues/1930p. We need everyone’s input on WDN’s best day/time slot.

It was recently suggested that Roster numbers are meaningless. That’s incorrect; Roster numbers are very relevant. Numerous digital net have
come and gone since we began in 2013. There’s a lot more to running training-nets than showing up on-time, on-freq, prepared to present a
useful curriculum. All teaching formats require pre-preparation & post-evaluation. NCS role is time & energy intensive on & off-air. There will
be a finite participation number for any net where diminishing participation will terminate the net. It’s not hard to comprehend. As participatio
n diminishes, it will eventually become more work for NCS than value. There’s still solid interest in our training format; we hope to continue
and evolve our training network.

I’ve not worked with a more satisfying team. I didn’t learn teamwork until I joined US Coast Guard. There I learned to work with shipmates
quickly and efficiently. It required personal discipline that I initially lacked. Working fast safely in shipboard evolutions is critical. An error can
injure many. We didn’t all like each other, but we leaned to work as a team onboard and settle our differences ashore. It’s the best of the
lessons I learned in 4yrs at sea. Later, I was a firefighter. Another calling where teamwork is fundamental. In a structure fire, you’re dependent
on the skill and focus of your teammates. ORCA is scattered across Western USA, but we work together seamlessly via HF radio. Training and
practicing together weekly, has solidified our network. And, there are more of us than you would guess from weekly Rosters. Some have come
and gone over the years, but they trained with us and may rejoin us in Emergencies.

Thank you for all you’ve done, from working ORCA regularly to running NBEMS Exercises. We wouldn’t have succeeded w/o you. I’ve learned
so much from many of you; I’d list you all, but would surely miss some. We’ve come a long way together. I hope we continue as a team with
a new format. In my observation, we’re at the forefront of EMCOMM/NBEMS and digital network training. Revising our network from
ORCA/WDN to WDN should strengthen our network. When you consider EMCOMM digital training nationwide, our network has more to offer
than the current digital training nets I’m aware of. Ops who’ve never Ck’d-In work our NBEMS Exercises as Monitors and Lurkers. Some work
our Exercises via on-line SDRs. Regular Exercise participants are the weekly model incoming Ops observe and emulate. This model is central
to our focus on self-motivated learning. ORCA wouldn’t be successful w/o you. We’re helping others to learn beyond our knowing. What we’ve
developed is well worth sustaining. Mindy & I will do our best to support this transition.

Next is the NBEMS Exercise w/Doug K7KY

Comments

Because of condx recently I am forced to use websdr to RX! I sure wish my qth was hearing as well as Utah is lol.

Oof no idea what that was during exercise! It would do TxID, then just stop transmitting, but act as if it was still sending the exercise file! It
didn’t work until I turned TxID off but then I accidently chose MFSK22 instead of 32.

I am very sad to see this be the last ORCA net, I am glad that I found it when I did and had a chance to be a part of it for the short time that I
have been. I look forward to many years to come carrying the torch forward with WDN and beyond.

73 everyone and see you all on WDN! de N6FPV k

Solstice -2 !!

It’s wet in Humboldt county tonight. We’ve already had 1.35″ and more
rain on the way tonight. Shaping up to be a very good drencher!
Should break off tomorrow and hopefully let some of those lovely
photons reach my radio shack!

It is already very noisy here, but NCS is blasting through it. I have
not had time yet to install the permanent LoG antenna, but looking
forward to a possible alternative when condx hit the rocks.

I’ve been helping my friend today. She had a medical proceedure this
morning, and felt pretty rough for a few hours. She’s spending the
night and will have to deal with me and the radios! I can tell she
is now feeling better.

Once last time, I’ll C U after school :)

Fact: 10 active check-ins tonight. Question: If more active checked in
who would have been bumped? :)

<Jaye> thinks about playing the “rodeo song” in honor of tonight’s net.

Thanks for all the fish!

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

ORCA < WA7HHE, Sending sincere thanks to Doug K7KY and Mindy W7ZAP for their 11 years of teaching FLDIGI NBEMS digital. Know your
exercises were sometimes difficult but always educational and have made us all better digital operators. Always patient and encouraging us
toward perfection, not to mention a YL NCS able to put all us guys to shame. All the best in your future amateur radio endevors, something
tells me you both will have a tuff time staying away. Best wishes to you two and hope WDN will meet your expectations incorporating ORCA
knowledge and conventions into WDN.

You’re very welcome Brad. We’ve really enjoyed CC, UT’s participation.

Tried listening into TC for awhile they were all over from 1500 to 1000 could not get any print on the RX window so gave up. Interesting
based on their email how many modes they were trying to use.

Something of interest from last night net when KE6SLS Jaye was TXing. I copied his QST first time no problem by time he sent the QST at end
of net I copied the Flmsg but noticed he had changed to 1484 and did not copy him on the WF till I moved from 1500 to 1486 then copied his
comments okay. That’s not much of a change but made a difference with the band conditions as they were. Something to note.

Good rain here in Reno yesterday .40 inches and a little more today. Weather reports clear rest of week till late Friday to early Saturday
possible more rain (I hope).

I will miss ORCA! Doug and Mindy thanks for all your time and effort to produce a class act for 572 continuous weeks and 340 exercies, since
you started counting. Look forward to you hanging around though.

ORCA < K7KY Thanks for working with us this final session of ORCA DIGITAL NET. Hat’s off to those who usually work the NBEMS Exercises.
Beside training & practice, NBEMS Exercises complete our weekly working example of efficient HF digital networking.

Very nice to have favorable band condx tonite. We’ve certainly struggled at times. When condx are tough, I always think of the Ops conducting
Phone nets. I’m a bigger digital fan than ever.

We deeply appreciate your kind thoughts tonight and the years of support and participation. Without you, it would not have happened. We
wanted to create a net we would want to join. Thankfully, the way we wanted to learn and develop resonated with you. We hope to continue
working w/you in the years ahead. Next year is likely to test our mettle in many ways. We’ll do better as a team.

We both CONFIRMED Steve W7WSV’s file tonight. Fitting for the final net. The band doesn’t always support Steve. BTN < Doug K7KY
