Tonight, ORCA net was particularly enjoyable to run. I’d spent 45min b4 ORCA Early Ck-In trying to work the Transcontinental Digital Test Net, 40m/THOR-22. It was a clustercluck. NCS was again 20hz below his advertised freq, 1500wf. Other stations were @ 1468 & 1492 during early net. The Western ANCS seemed disconnected from actual NCS. I did Ck-In later when NCS called for missed stations. I connected him directly in Maine. Later, I learned NCS QSY’d to 2000wf, but only announced QSY on zoom; those on-air w/o zoom were left behind.

After Transcon’, ORCA DIGITAL NET was a breath of fresh air and we ran as usual, like a Swiss clock. Thank you so much for your dedication, discipline, skills, and ongoing support. This network is a true gathering of eagles. I’m finally understanding where our Eastern colleagues, Don AB1PH & Barry K3EUI, are focused. Their nets are configured to accommodate entry-level digital Ops. Oddly, they seem uninterested in how EMCOMM/NBEMS training & practice is conducted out West. I’m weary of trying to connect w/them. Entry-level training is important; those already skilled in digital operations will quickly migrate to advanced nets that challenge & enhance their knowledge and skills. We already have Ck-Ins from the Transcon’ experiment; we’re enriched by this event.

Eight Ops Ck’ed-In to work the NBEMS Exercise, but only 6 participated. Fred K6FVC in Jerome,ID checked in Active, but was gone when called. This occurred 17/Oct too. Fred may not understand our format. Active Ck-Ins work the NBEMS Exercise and subsequent Traffic net. QNX stations Monitor or QRT. Ken KR7KR’s antenna fell and he had to withdraw. We thought PSK-125RC5 would be difficult to decode, but no. 5 of 6 Ops CONFIRMED in a single pass. The remaining station needed only a single block in THOR-44 to wrap the Exercise. Band was excellent.

If you received important traffic you wanted to pass on via VHF/UHF, how would you accomplish this? Moving traffic between HF<>VHF/UHF and visa-versa may be necessary in emergencies. Years back, ORCA passed traffic back’n forth HF/VHF every session. This practice ended when our local digital VHF Ops lost interest. All mode radios like our FT-857Ds make this exchange as simple as turning the memory channel knob. HF only radios are a different story. One of our early partners had to move messages by thumbdrive to another PC/radio. Not ideal for time-sensitive traffic. Many ORCA Ops have digital VHF/UHF nets locally. In emergencies, we may need to pass traffic to and from these nets.

If you have observations or suggestions regarding ORCA’s closure and transition to a single portal, please email NCS and WDN’s NCS team. This net belongs to all of us; we’d like to make changes that reflect your interests.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Bob KJ7ZTF in Payson,AZ. We’ll ask Bob to review our Quick-Start Guide: http://orcadigitalnet.com/quick-start/ and also our Ck-In Macros on the Macro page. Welcome back to Mark W7EAZ in Independence,OR. Mark just moved from Federal Way,WA, He checked in with a Yaesu FT-817 & magnetic Loop @ 1w tonight. His signal printed 100% in SW/OR. His Loop is controlled by software. Check out Mark’s Loop image below. Although the Transcontinental NBEMS Test Net has been a little frustrating, it’s also a vector for stations interested in exploring ORCA & WDN.

Mark W7EAZ’s Mag Loop antenna (click for larger image):

Well, that’s was pretty incredible. The signal you heard was from 1 watt as shown on my power meter to my PreciseRF 80m loop. WOW I had some issues copying some of the others but you and Mindy came in like gang busters. This is the loop on the steel post in my garage.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise features FLMSG Blank Form. Next session, a 1st Tuesday, Don KJ7VGV will conduct the NBEMS
Exercise. We’ll use the new THOR modes often in NBEMS Exercises to learn their characteristics faster than w/occasional Mode
Shoot-Outs. Frequent use will acquaint us with their characteristic appearance, sound, & capabilities more quickly.

Don AB1PH has settled on Tuesday, 1800p for his Transcontinental Digital Net. Not the best sked for ORCA Ops, but it’s his net
& his prerogative. Working more directly with Don lately, I better understand his agenda. The Transcontinental Net is configured
similar to other digital nets Don runs. THOR-11 is net mode, members run ‘TxID/RxID’ active, ‘LOCK’ unused, ‘Retain TX freq
lock’ disable.

These software settings are opposite to ORCA configuration; I’m beginning to understand Don’s agenda. His nets are configured
opposite to ORCA DIGITAL NET and Western Digital Net. Don is accommodating incoming digital Ops who have difficulty tuning
and retaining frequency settings, w/limited understanding of FLDIGI’s features and settings. His agenda is different than ours.
While we’re newbie friendly, we don’t do entry-level training on-air during nets; we don’t have time. We all help incoming Ops
0ff-net/on-air, & by email, & telephone. Our after-net Monitor’s Session is specifically tailored for incoming Ops.

While I wasn’t initially enthused about Don’s choosing Tuesday, but I’m beginning to think it could enhance our operations. A
Nat’l level digital training net for entry-level Ops may benefit us. Many stations currently participating in the Transcon’ Test nets
are already seasoned digital Ops. 43% of one net’s Roster were ORCA/WDN Ops. They won’t be working entry-level training
nets for long when more challenging advanced training nets are available. There’ll be a natural progression in learning and skills
that matriculates Ops to advanced training nets. That brings me to the next topic, ORCA closing on 26/Dec/23.

ORCA isn’t closing because we’ve tired of it; we’ve just come to a point in our lives where practical decisions today may preclude
difficulties next year. I’m getting slower and less physically capable; that progression will probably persist. Mindy has responsibilitie
s in two households with increasing physical work at both. We’ve simply run out of sufficient time & energy to run ORCA as we
have. We’re working on plans to retain as much of ORCA training & practice as possible.

Working with team WDN, we have some ideas that could continue NBEMS training & practice after ORCA closes. We’re thinking
to merge ORCA’s NBEMS Exercise with WDN’s format. We could do this w/current WDN staff of 3 NCS. NBEMS Exercise would
be conducted similar to ORCA’s Guest NCS who currently conduct Exercises on 1st Tuesdays. Don KJ7VGV, Bruno KG7VVN,
and I are capable of running NBEMS Exercises. We can try this arrangement after ORCA closes & see if it works. WDN still
needs two more NCS. Adding the NBEMS Exercise to WDN won’t significantly increase NCS workload except for Don KJ7VGV
who is both NCS and runs NBEMS Exercises. NBEMS Exercises would be conducted by Guest NCS. Exercises would be
conducted by the 3 stations currently conducting ORCA NBEMS Exercises. It’s easier to conduct these Exercises than Net
Controlling entire nets. Hopefully, it will be easier to attract NBEMS Exercise volunteers than volunteers for full service NCS.
We’re seeking your input. It’s your network and we’re trying to arrange for best use.

Another consideration is moving WDN to ORCA’s Tuesday time slot. ORCA is better attended than WDN; we don’t know all the
variables, but one significant variable is personal schedules and commitments. ORCA has occupied this specific Day/Time &
Frequency for many years and Tuesday seems to have less VARA & RTTY QRM. Having Transcon’ Net move in ahead of
ORCA Early Ck-In is unfortunate. They will almost certainly run in slow modes to accommodate newbies and their nets are likely
to run long when they begin training. Some of their nets took longer than an hour to complete Ck-In. Maybe we’d be better off
@ WDN’s Wed sked. Some of these questions can be resolved w/experimentation. Give net-sked some thought too.

WDN news: We’re waiting to hear from a friend of Carroll W7WXV who may be able to point us to a node where WDN can
upload formal digital traffic directly into the NTS system. We had this option when WDN was new; Steve K6ETA’s friend who ran
an NTS digital backbone node enabled us to upload Formal digital traffic directly. Currently, WDN has no direct path for Formal
Traffic.

Today is this hams birthday, clebrated by doing a repair on the free 55″ 4K TV I found on craigslist the other week! I ordered a
$40 backlight replacement kit and some small suction cups to remove the screen, which finally came today. Took me about 30
min to get it apart and replace the backlights, now it looks just about brand new! There is a weird line thats more of a contrast
change on the bottom 1/5th of the panel, not sure what that is about, but I guess you can’t get it all perfect! It’s a LOT better
then it was before looking blue and with hot spots where the LED lens had fallen off the internal strips (happens as they age and
get hot, degrades the glue that holds them on). I used to say I couldn’t tell the difference from 1080 to 2k or 4k, but it’s not
true on this 55″ I most certainly can see the difference! It’s almost unreal how real it looks.

73, see everyone next net! de N6FPV, BTN k

Oh my, the icky situations I get myself into. . I have an M$10 laptop
on my table tonight. It now has Mint 21.2 cohabiting on the same drive
and will enable the op, my x-wife, to use this laptop. I really feel
sorry for all the time she must have wasted with that viral OS. There
is now a short-cut to her old documents file and everything works like
a REAL COMPUTER again 🙂 Her other device is an ipad, YIKES! Thank
god for Linux and freedom of choice!

Wx changed from blue skies and sunshine, to clouds and chance of rain.
Looks like it will be rainy skies for next 10 days or so.

There is a new source of noise at my QTH this past week. Enough noise
that it does interfere with 80m through to 2m! I hope what ever it is
is temporary. .

I received an email from Rick KJ7ROX who just received a new 80m
antenna. He’s hoping to increase is gain on 80m and I hope it works
gangbusters for him!

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

HAHAHAHA. Good for Mindy! I haven’t tried that, it would be dangerous and stupid for me. The kitchen is on the far end of
the house, farthest away from shack. Nope, I’d be knocking on the walls… No new bruses is good bruses. 🙂

I didn’t have time or desire to chk into TC net. If there doing thro11 then life is just too
short for that.

BTW.. .. ..

I’ve been shopping for a replacement generator. I know what I want. However, I live in
CALIFORNIA and can not get it shipped here. I called a shop just over the CA/OR boarder, and you know, they just happen to
have it in stock. So I am planning to find a helper to drive me up to Brookings to buy this thing, with wheels and electric start

What gen did you select? < K7KY

Oh I completely understand. I have a difficult time in noisy places too. I don’t even have
hearing aids, but the noise can really bother me these days with the tenitis<sp?> ..

Anyway, the honda eu3000is which is an electric start and they have a wheel attachment
for it there too which they will install for $40 .. Seems like a really nice shop up
there. It is VERY quiet and the electric start is needed for me these days. I can still
pull the rope on my old one, but it’s a struggle… For petesakes! Anyway, I still have to work out logistics and I’ll let you know
when it could happen via phone… But I’d sure like to
shake your hand, and Mindy’s, and just have an eyeball .. You guys are a big part of
my world and have been for over a decade! Anyway, bucket list and all.

Oh I don’t recall the name of the shop, real nice yl answered the phone today and helped me
with prices. It’s in brookings and there’s another one, same name in Crescent city, but it
has to be bought in Oregon since I live in CALIFORNIA! 🙂 It’s gasoline and it uses an
econo switch which means it will run as slow as possible for the load condx it’s under. The
biggest selling poing is that it is only 58db which is quieter than an everage converstation.
That will make it nice and quieet when our power goes away and I wont’t be waking the dead.
