Band condx continue to improve. Only Matt N6FPV CONFIRMED the NBEMS Exercise file in PSK-250R.  At 220wpm & 250hz, it wasn’t likely to CONFIRM many. 3 stations CONFIRMED THOR-56, & 2 stations CONFIRMED THOR-32. Jaye KE6SLS doesn’t have current software with the new THOR modes. We won’t ask Jaye how he created the Exercise Radiogram without decoding our transmissions. What works in group practice may not work for P2P emergency traffic. Still, kudos to Jaye for strategic thinking.

Don AB1PH’s Transcon’ Test Net ran in MFSK-32 this evening. Ck-In was complete in 29min.  Ck-in & 1 FLMSG  wrapped the net in 48min. Both are Transcon net time records. Nearly every station was right on 1488hz. A big improvement from the early test nets where some were 20-30hz off freq. Transcon is progressing very nicely considering the scope of coverage and range of Operator experience. Don plans another 40m test net next Tues, same time/freq w/THOR-22. Ck-In and submit a reception report & AAR if you can. He’s established a groups.io forum: https://groups.io/g/transcontinental-nbems-net/ Join the forum; the email thread is closed.

The Transcon’ Test Net has already benefited ORCA DIGITAL NET & Western Digital Net. New Ck-Ins have come to both portals from the Transcon project. We’re pleased to have them aboard.

Ideas and potential directions for closing ORCA are interesting and encouraging. Ending ORCA wasn’t an easy decision for us. It’s the framework around which our network developed. We really have no other choice; we’ve come to the point where our ORCA responsibilities encroach on family and homestead responsibilities. As I slow down and do less, Mindy’s work load increases. She has a lot on her plate these days. We hope not to disrupt the ORCA network, but assist in morphing ORCA & WDN.

ORCA has stuck closely to a training/practice format. Our training & practice enabled us to switch easily to an emergency net. WDN can do the same by providing some training & practice with it’s current format and switching to an emergency net as needed. If this or similar configurations appeal to members, we should be able to revise WDN smoothly and sustain the integrity of our network. We are the network; ORCA & WDN have been our portals. We did very well with ORCA’s configuration; a similar configuration for WDN should also work well. If we hang together, a single portal will work well and participation may equal or surpass ORCA.

Another salient issue is ORCA & WDN websites. ORCA’s server lease expires 27/Jan/24. We’ll fund another year to 27/Jan/25, enabling access to content and/or migration. If we’re fortunate, Steve K6ETA will give us Webmaster access to WDN’s website or help migrate it to another server. If we ask for Webmaster access, we should pay server fees. WDN has not been updated in years. Migrations are technical. They can be difficult and time consuming. ORCA DIGITAL NET is hosted on our ferrycreek.com server. We’ll retain access and assist migrating the site if that occurs.

^rANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise features FLMSG Radiogram form. Your reply to the Exercise question may help us plan ahead. We’ll use the new
THOR modes more often in NBEMS Exercises. Frequent use will help us learn their characteristics faster than occasional Mode Shoot-Outs.

For tonight’s Comment Round, You will have previously added the 1st sentence w/Macro tags in place of data. When you call your comment
file by Macro, the Macro Parser will replace Tags with their variables. If you missed this Macro experiment thread, no worries. Send comments
as you usually do.

Don AB1PH has settled on Tuesday, 1800p for NBEMS Transcontinental Net. Tonight, Don is testing MFSK-32. If you participated, please share
your impressions during Comments.

Bruno KG7VVN & Don KJ7VGV contacted us last week with thoughts and suggestions regarding ORCA’s closure on 26/Dec/23. Their suggestio
ns are good. Ending ORCA isn’t the end of our our network. Our network developed in ORCA, but ORCA is it’s portal, not it’s essence. We are
the network; the foundation for ORCA & WDN. ORCA is closing, but WDN is solid and fully capable of supporting our agenda and carrying it
forward. We’re not necessarily diminished by closing one portal. WDN can be adjusted to include EMCOMM/NBEMS training similar to ORCA.
Our network developed from one portal with 2 NCS. Today, we have 2 portals & 5 NCS. Let’s not lose focus and inertia, but merge the best of
both portals in WDN and enhance our mission. Out West, we’re at the forefront of EMCOMM/NBEMS traffic-handling training, practice, and
implementation. Our leadership is important; lets sustain our momentum and enhance our network.

Currently, WDN is a traffic net that processes no formal traffic. That’s not a problem as long as we’re prepared to process traffic in time of
need. Meantime, we can redefine WDN. ORCA is a Training net that morphs to Emergency Net when needed. WDN can be configured similarly
. Training & practice are vital; ORCA participation reveals that numerous digital Ops value regular training & practice. Interest in digital
operations training is actually increasing. We can add training & practice to WDN and sustain the integrity of our network. We’ve worked
together seamlessly for years. We don’t want to lose that inertia. The developing Transcontinental Net has already brought new Ops to ORCA
& WDN. We can enhance our service to the digital community by merging key training and practice components into one portal. Your
thoughts, suggestions, and support will help determine our future.

We’ll fund the website server for another year; it will be available until 27/Jan/25. When we’ve resolved our transition from two portals to one,
we can address website issues. Meantime, ORCA’s website remains on-line.

I was having a tough time getting a copy on any of the 40m NCS tonight, so I can’t offer much evaluation on it.

I was able to find a working 55″ 4k TV for FREE on craigslist! It’s backlight LEDs are shot (though still working) but I ordered a simple $40 kit
to fix it, can’t wait for it to come, what a fantastic score :).

Another fantastic sunny day here. Battery is 95% even with me tinkering
on the high bands.

Tonight, I dialed up the TC net on 40m. I was able to copy a fair
amount of ncs and perfect cpy on ancs. I saved my copy and will forward
to the net nbems net. Cpy a lot of stations, but I noticed our regions
were well prepared to send exact info to ncs, and used pre-tone.
That is flowers on the wall paper for this camper to see. Good work
folks!

Steve w7wsv needs a mo-better 80m antenna! He has an outstanding sig
on 20m, 30m, and 40m!

My added macro for tonight’s ex is using the S/N macro. I don’t know
how it could possibly work however!

PSK250R is not a good mode in fading condx! Even if the signal is
HUGE!

Just an FYI for folks that work 75/80m at night. Band has begun to
go extremely long around 21:00PT and closer stations are no longer
copyable. We very will may see band changing earlier as solstice
nears.

As you might recall, I don’t have the newest THOR modes. So best I
could do is copy first tfc and then copy/paste what I could. Didn’t
have enough time to xfer to FLA for tonight’s session :)

I pulled the turkey from the freezer on Monday. Have a super secret
recipe from sister-in-law I’ll use. Fingers crossed as this will be
my first, unsupervised turkey cook!

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

NIce work on the macro Jaye. Tnx 4 the sig report too. Glad u could copy 40m net well.

On the 40m TC net, I was centered & locked at 1500. Then, of course, I centered on Don
when he sent his long tone, but forgot to unlock. Then I TXed off net freq. A good reminder to lock
on net freq, not 1500WF.

Tnx for band update. Unsupervised turkey cook… good luck! The cats will look after you :-)

The TC net worked a lot better tonight with MFSK 32. I got 25 call signs. Still can’t understand Ops who can’t read instructions. I copied
AB1PH about 90%. ANCS copied 100%. I think AB1PH needs to use Flamp and 2 headers to get a good copy out. Flmsg I copied on the WF
but not into Flmsg. Gud to see so many Ops from here on 40m tonight.

I have to say your training/learning skills has put us way ahead of the crowd! TU

First time you ran a TXT file through Flmsg the Flamp. Tricky!

OK, so those really WERE tags. I’d like to add one more – my ‘MYQTH’ tag:

Briceland, CA

(Briceland does not have a PO, so I must travel to Redway to pick up any mail I might get from the FCC.)

I’ve been giving thought to what it might be like to use JS8 Call to do check-ins for something like a large, HF NBEMS net. All participants
could check-in at once and the whole process would take only a few minutes. NCS would have the neccessary info to know who to call and
direct and more time could be spent relaying actual NBEMS traffic. This dual program tactic would be for more advanced nets – not entry level
training nets (Train Locally, Practice Globally!). Of course I’m thinking about something like a true Transcontinental NBEMS net that is focused
on relaying messages in FLMsg and FLAmp (the MS in NBEMS). Nothing I know of right now beats JS8 Call for speed and ease in facillitating a
simple digital check-in process.

Wishing you all a nice Thanksgiving. Go Niners!

Last Tuesday, we Ck’ed In 12 stations in 9min. Tonight, we Ck’ed 21 stations in 15min, acknowledging each station. Also tonite, the
Transcontinental Net completed ck-in in 37min w/MFSK-32. A record for the Trans’ net. The 1st Trans’ net needed 1hr/31min to log 43
stations in THOR-11, acknowledging ck-ins in groups. MFSK-32 is hard to beat for digital net operations.

Welcome back 2 Sila AK0SK in Kansas City,MO. It’s been awhile.

If you added Macro Tags to tonight’s Comments, no one should be able to tell. The Tags should be seamlessly replaced with text. You may
not use this feature often, but it add to our understanding of the Macro Parser and Tags. Thanks to those that experimented w/Macro Tags.

We try to begin NBEMS Exercises in an optimistic mode. We don’t expect it to CONFIRM all Ops, sometimes none. The 2nd & 3rd Modes are
better matched to condx, as well as we can guess anyway. The object it to become familiar with the audio/visual signature of many useful
modes. In emergencies, we’ll spend less time dithering about mode selection.
