Tonight’s band was both good and poor depending on where you live. Don KJ7VGV did a good job with the NBEMS Exercise. While he seemed to be well copied, he had difficulty copying some stations. That’s HF radio. We offset band difficulties with our Relay skills. Relays are essential on HF, especially in a weak solar cycle.

As the Exercise progressed, we realized Don wasn’t copying every station. We could have relayed for him, but decided not to interrupt him and address it after the Exercise. He didn’t copy 3 Reports, 2 he didn’t hear and 1 that didn’t reply. In retrospect, we could get his attention by VidID @ 2000wf w/o disrupting the Exercise. ORCA Ops use our Ck-In Macro to get NCS attention during nets. It’s the best way to contact NCS when NCS is busy. Unless NCS is transmitting, NCS can see VidIDs and will call that station next.

As to the Exercise question, nearly everyone knew why we leave two blank lines b4 text in Macros. 2 blank lines in the Macro produce a single blank line that separates our text from HF noise in the RX buffer, making it much easier to read. It also makes the log easier to read. We’ve learned and shared numerous tips and tactics, a networking benefit.

There’s more to NBEMS Exercises than traffic-handling. We’re also learning to better manage attention and focus. The Exercise is briskly paced to simulate a busy emergency net. An important component is tracking your place in rotation so you’re prepared to reply to NCS w/o delay. This isn’t initially easy. Humans are not natural multi-taskers; managing multiple events simultaneously takes training and practice. Editing a received message while attending to net flow gets easier w/practice. This is why we added the Monitor’s Session after nets. It enables incoming Ops to Ck-In QNX and work NBEMS Exercises silently w/o time pressure b4 participating on-air.

Speaking of Relays, we used to have Relays during NBEMS Exercises, but we’ve not done so recently. There’s a lot going on for NCS during these Exercise and Relays are only occasionally possible. NCS usually Fills all station, but now & then we have a station already CONFIRMED with sufficient signal & QTH to fill other stations. We like to do this when we can; sometimes, we realize the opportunity too late to act.

VidID  again. VidID is an excellent way to get NCS attention on a busy net. We see VidID @ 2000wf easily unless we’re transmitting and waterfall is suspended. You’ll see regular ORCA Ops using VidID @ Ck-In or to get our attention. VidID Ck-In Macros w/instructions are available here: http://orcadigitalnet.com/macros/  Email for assistance: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com.

We appreciate your support and participation while we transition from original ORCA to a continuation of ORCA NBEMS Training and Practice on WDN. We want to sustain training & practice, it’s the the core of ORCA operations. We’ll forego Net Reports, Maps, ORCAtest image tables, etc, but retain training & practice. If we stand-up a daytime training net, we may eventually cover Coast2Coast like the old SATERN Digital Emergency Net. Practicing emergency traffic-handling daytime on 20m would increase our traffic-handling experience and skills. SATERN ran a well supported NBEMS training net, noon Saturday on 14.065, for 7yrs. Unfortunately, the Amateurs in charge had a serious clash with SATERN management and the net ended abruptly w/o explanation.

Thanks again for your participation, support, and friendship. We’ve learned so much together over the years and we hope to continue with a more manageable time/energy commitment.

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise features FLMSG Radiogram Form. Don KJ7VGV is NCS for this Exercise.

Original ORCA DIGITAL NET ends on 26/Dec/23. What if we:

1) Add ORCA NBEMS Exercises to WDN
2) Intersperse WDN NBEMS Exercises w/other relevant exercises like off-net-freq traffic handling
3) Move WDN to ORCA’s Tues/Time/Freq/Mode
4) Recruit one more WDN NCS (a pending possibility)
5) Train more Ops to conduct NBEMS Exercises
6) Resolve WDN website issues
7) Retain ORCA’s website
8) Experiment with a limited ORCA daytime training net, Sat, mid-day, 20m (30m?)

If supported by membership, we can run WDN in ORCA’s Tues slot, and include NBEMS Exercises one week & off-net-freq traffic-handling
Exercises next week. Both would prepare us for handling emergency traffic and keep our traffic-handling skills tuned. Moving to Tuesday is
likely to increase participation. ORCA Ops have been practicing on Tuesday for 11yrs. Adding regular training to WDN will add value and
increase participation.

Following nighttime ORCA, we could pivot to a much simpler mid-day 20m training net. This would be similar to SATERN’s format. Check-in,
Announcements, NBEMS Exercise, Close net, Relay stations provide Fills. The Relay station would resend the Exercise file b4 Filling. This
format is simple enough I could NCS it myself (K7KY) with Relay support; it would take much less time/energy than current ORCA format.

We can run a daytime net experimentally. If it works, we can invite Eastern stations. A mid-day net will give regular practice in daylight; we’ll
learn more about daylight traffic-handling. In extended emergencies, Emergency Nets may run 24/7.

These changes don’t require additional staff. We can do this w/current WDN staff of 3 NCS. NBEMS Exercise would be conducted similar to
ORCA’s Guest NCS who currently conduct ORCA Exercises on 1st Tuesdays. Don KJ7VGV, Bruno KG7VVN, and I (K7KY) can conduct NBEMS
Exercises on WDN as Guest NCS. A 4 Tuesday month would have 2 NBEMS Exercises and 2 off-net-freq exercises or other practice routines.

WDN still needs additional NCS. 3 Ops are currently covering 4&5 monthly sessions. Adding the NBEMS Exercise to WDN won’t increase their
workload; Guest NCS will conduct Exercises and off-net-freq Exercises will eventually be conducted by NCS. I’ll run the 1st one or 2 off-net-fre
q Exercises. They’re not difficult; this is routine on traffic nets. The Exercise will demonstrate the routine and complement the QST Round.
NCS dispatches 2 Ops off-freq to pass a message while NCS continues with QST Round.

Think it over. If there are no objections, we’ll experiment, adjust, & adapt as we go. As always, Thanks for your support and participation.
We’ve really accomplished a lot together in 11yrs; we want to sustain our network by shifting to a simpler format that’s easier for us to
support. We hope to continue working together in a new configuration. We regret having to close the original format, but that’s our reality. We
love this network of friends and colleagues; we’ll do our best to continue w/training and practice.

The NBEMS Exercise is next w/Don KJ7VGV

BUGGER!

Busy day here today. Beginning with a office visit to the Eureka VA
where I am being referred to local surgeon, but my doc also burned/
froze another chunk of cancer.

I came home and recovered from my journey. Then I headed into the
radio shack to work on calibration of both my sound card and my radio.
Quite an adventure, but now have it dialed in to less than 1hz throughout
the 1.8-30MHz! If you haven’t done this with your radio, I really
suggest doing a frequency calibration! FLDigi manual makes this
process mostly harmless. FLDigi adds a neat ability to ZOOM into our
waterfall by 4x. This really makes it like a piece of test equipment,
and made my final frequency calibration a breeze.

My buddy Tim kn6ono volunteered to take me to Brookings, OR! I normally
wouldn’t even consider such a trip in my condition, but the opportunity
to FINALLY meet Doug & Mindy drove this decision! We were able to
complete our business in Brookings, then we all headed for a local
eatery for some fine Tia food with some pretty great company. Doug &
I both suffer from hearing issues, and noisy places are difficult for
the both of us. However, I was simply delighted to finally meet these
amazing ops I’ve known for so long! And THANK YOU for lunch!

I have been absolutely haunted by RFI noise here this past week. This
morning, the noise lifted and I had first good SSB QSO with our “Meet
up” group on 75m. My Monday emergency digital net was exceptionally
difficult. I don’t know the source of noise, but I hope it is gone
for good! Bugger, noise is back at 19:45 :( I need to get back on
my LOOP ON GROUND project! Now have RF gain at 4 and Attenuation on.
Arghhhh, the noise just wipes out the band for most.

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

The FCC has issued a waiver to allow ham radio operators to communicate with federal stations on and around Pearl Harbor Day.

The waiver is conditioned on participating stations monitoring the three identified federal frequencies of 14.375 MHz, 18.1625 MHz and
21.856 MHz; responding on spectrum allocated to the amateur service and only at the request of event organizers; operating consistent with
the privileges of their amateur licenses; and limiting communications to the period Dec. 6–9.

ORCA NCS< W6DLW, Mindy/Doug, Conditions were up and down here throughout the net tonight. Wow, feels good to be back on ORCA.
I’ve truly missed the action, interaction with the others on the waterfall and learning. Having said that I will miss next weeks ORCA Net due to
our RCARC Clubs upcoming annual Christmas Party. As some may know my wife and I have moved her 97 year old mother into our home to
live with us. This has been a challenge to say the least but in a good way. With that a number of priorities have changed for both of us as well
as her mother. But we are blessed as she is still with us. As always, it’s nice to see everyone on the waterfall. Stay safe. 73.

WDN has been in a need to have another NCS to cover one week a month. That need has existed for well over a year and no one has stepped
up to provide that coverage.

Different models have been bounced around to merge ORCA into WDN. The bottom line is WDN needs another NCS volunteer to do the
exercise once a month. I had proposed an exercise with a start of every other week but inconsitency is not conducive for a training net.
Therefore there is a need for someone to take on the fouth week.

EXERCISE: “Blank lines preceding Macro text separate RX text from previous text & noise”. ORCA website: NCS TOOLS, NCS TACTICS.
