Wow! Where to begin. It was an excellent net. Thanks to your preparation and focus, it ran like clockwork. A friendly reminder to newer Ops; we don’t transmit out of order or address another station w/o going thru NCS. It’s this discipline that keeps nets running smoothly w/o doubles. All transmissions go thru NCS.
While the band was long and strong, NVIS deteriorated early in the net. This effects all stations near to NCS and also drops those to our SE like John KS6M in Oakland,CA and Don KG7VGV who’s signal was not heard and was unable to check-in. Steve W7WSV is usually impacted by this condx, but not tonight.
We’d planed to use the Path Evaluation Macro this evening, but forgot. Changes to net operations are easy to plan, but we need a few sessions to revise and learn NCS routines. Our time available for ORCA is more limited today.
Changes to the weekly NBEMS Exercise are working well. The Basic NBEMS Exercise attracts more participants than the Advanced Exercise. Tonight, we had 11 participating stations. 8 is all we can manage for the Advanced Exercise and Traffic Round, but it looks like we can accommodate 12 stations for Basic Exercises and still wrap the net in reasonable time.
80m is beginning to look more like it’s usual winter condx. Stations in MO, OH, & MI did very well tonight. Hopefully, this trend will continue, enabling these distant station to participate in net operations. Tim WB0HRO in Okemos,MI was able to work the net for the first time tonight. Condx usually restrict him to Monitoring. Let’s hope 80m continues to improve for our distant colleagues.
Tom WB7EUX’s comments are interesting:
” NCS < WB7EUX – Doug’s digital technique for avoiding doubles was also replicated during NAVY MARS checkins using SSB. An operator would key the mic and speak “This is. . .”, unkey the mic, listen and, if no one else was speaking continue with keying the mic and speaking their call sign. Both are very effective techniques for streamlining a net.”
Using Pre-Tone on Phone nets might not have occurred to us, but it’s certainly intuitive and effective. Pre-Tone is probably the most significant factor in our digital networking protocols. Doubles are the bane of digital networks and usually lead to confusion, delay, and frustration. Digital nets were hard to manage before implementing Pre-Tone. Now, it’s routine for seasoned digital Ops. It’s the seasoned digital Ops that enable nets to run briskly and smoothly. It’s their knowledge of net protocols, discipline, and focus that create a harmonious net. Hats-Off to each of you; you really do make the net what it is.
We often hear, ‘Thank you for the net’, and we always appreciate. It also makes us think, ‘And, thank you for the net too’, because there would be no net w/o your support and participation. We’re only the Conductor; you are the Orchestra and w/o you there’s no music (-: Together, we’re advancing our skills and advancing Amateur Digital Networking.
80m doesn’t favor mid-USA stations during Summer, so we usually don’t log our mid-USA colleagues until Winter. It’s been awhile since we logged Rex WB8TGD in Dayton,OH. Welcome back, Rex. We also learned that Neil W0NRP of Lees Summit,MO is running a digital VHF training net in Kansas City,MO. Today, many of our members are leading VHF digital training nets. We anticipate the development of more HF digital nets in 2022. They’ll likely be lead by some of our ORCA colleagues.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
We’ll run another Basic NBEMS Exercise tonight. Next Tuesday, 25/Jan/22, we’ll run an Advanced NBEMS Exercise combining the Basic and Advanced Exercises and a Traffic Round. The Advanced NBEMS Exercise includes practice in many traffic-handling tasks based in the computer operating system. The Advanced NBEMS Exercise is more complex; it’s best learned by working silently a few times before working live. Monitoring stations can Fill or CONFIRM their Exercise files in the Monitor’s Session immediately after net.
Note that Basic and Advanced NBEMS Exercises both use brief/simple instructions. The Basid Exercise requires copying the Exercise file and reporting Fill-Blocks needed or file CONFIRMED to NCS.
The Advanced exercise also requires Reporting primary file Blocks-Needed or CONFIRMED to NCS BEFORE working the Advanced Exercise. It may involve the PC File Manager and Text Editor. Advance Exercise participants send their Advanced Exercise file to NCS in the Traffic Round. We only run a Traffic Round after an Advanced NBEMS Exercise to enable participants to CONFIRM their work. As a training net, we don’t process formal Traffic.
Soon, we hope to have a volunteer or two run the Basic NBEMS Exercise. We suggest two main categories of content. News of interest to Radio Ops and digital traffic-handling Tips and Tactics. To keep the Exercises short, we summarize content and provide a reference, ie: URL, publication, etc. We’re working on a webpage ‘How to’ for the Basic NBEMS Exercise. If you’re willing to give this a try, we’ll do our best to have you feeling comfortable before beginning.
Consider this: We’re at the forefront of Amateur Radio Digital Networking. Phone and CW nets have been around forever, but digital nets are relatively new. They are, by nature, more challenging to conduct than CW & Phone nets. Together, we’ve developed and refined a very efficient digital networking protocol. Our success rests on three pillars.
1) ARRL’s Directed Net Protocol
2) Pre-Tone protocol
3) Operator knowledge and discipline
Following ARRL’s Directed Net protocol exactly works perfectly for digital nets. NCS develops net operations based on ARRL’s Directed Net protocols. All transmissions go through NCS w/o exception.
Pre-Toning before transmitting is our main double-avoidance tactic. The original idea came from Ken K7IFG who first began using FLDIGI’s optional feature, Pre-Signal Tone. This configurable feature sends an automatic tone signal before signal content. It alerts others that you are about to transmit, avoiding some doubles. Because it’s automated, it can’t be stopped once activated. Others may know you intend to transmit, but you have no way to hold your transmission if the frequnecy is busy.
We abandoned the Pre-Signal Tone feature in favor of Pre-Toning manually with a tap of the TUNE button. When you start and stop the Tune signal, you can listen for signals before sending, avoiding even more signal collisions than possible with the Pre-Signal Tone feature. Sending Pre-Tone manually by TUNE button is the most efficient method for avoiding doubles.
The word ‘discipline’ has some negative connatations. It can imply correction of errors or a dressing-down. It also entails understanding and following procedures through personal knowledge and intent. Operator discipline is the catalyst that binds and focuses our nets; they’re consistently orderly and efficient. We get a lot of practice in a short time nearly every session. We work well together because we’re all on the same page. Our nets present a working example of efficient Amateur digital networking.

ORCA < WA7HHE, looking like the Utah State ARES through ARRL is making “Winlink” the states ECOMM platform. I’m suspecting NBEMS is too challenging for them. While Winlink and is definitely another Tool in the Tool box, I like NBEMS because it provides near instant Incident Situational Awareness through its ability to multicast to all stations at the same time. In my past Incident Management work Situational awareness was really pounded into us. For example if participating on a NBEMS net for a wildland fire and it was reported on the net that the fire had broken the fire-line with info indicating loved ones were in its path would that be a concern for you?
I might mention is my opinion that K6ETA integrates NBEMS and Winlink perfectly on the WDN. Winlink is a good P-P long haul message platform. Just my 2 cents. 73’s Brad

NCS < WB7EUX – Doug’s digital technique for avoiding doubles was also replicated during NAVY MARS checkins using SSB. An operator would key the mic and speak “This is. . .”, unkey the mic, listen and, if no one else was speaking continue with keying the mic and speaking their call sign. Both are very effective techniques for streamlining a net.

Sri, no signal reports tonight, I’m a bit tuckered out. Helping my mom move into my grandmother’s old house. Fortunately it’s a local move and she’s doing it slowly. Nice to be spending time at my grandmother’s house, it’s cute and has nice memories. Trying not to overdo it… slow and steady wins the race, right?? We moved items my Mom had stored of my grandmother’s. I ended up with a nice digital piano that was my grandfather’s. I’m learning to play by watching YouTube tutorial videos… kind of a fun distraction and encouraging to see progress day by day.

and we’ve fallen a bit behind w/ORCA and changes to the net. We have now more than a dozen Ops with the image macro working and we plan to use if from time to time. If you have ideas about other exercise with image macros, let us know.

Thoughts on Winlink…..
Winlink is a vero good system for formal message traffic, but very cumbersome for inet management.
The biggest advantage of Winlink is that you do not have to be a ham to use it. This means that non-ham workers with ARC and other agencies can use it too, and hams in the blackout area can get formal traffic out to a gateway where it is injected onto the internet to reach its destination. It permits hams and non-hams in the agencies to work diredtly with one another.
That said, as I mentioned, running a net using Winlink is extremely clum,n. e7 our testing, traning and simulations in the Kansasy City area we have come to settle on using Winlink for formal message traffic, and either a packet radio terminal program such as UZ7HO’s EasyTerm or FLDIGI for net management. This keeps all net participants in the loop with much faster dissemination of net control info.

I thought the BP filter was set with the mode, and the mode for the flmsg and flamp followed the fldigi mode settings.
Steve if I understand correctly, FLDIGI will follow mode changes perfectly if you hv RxID active It doesn’t effect your filters. You have to set your filters depending on mode bandwidth. btu < K7KY
Where do I set the bandwidth in fldigi or is that only on the radio? Flamp follows the mode and I do receive MSFK-32 pretty well but the other modes does not come through. The Flmsg I get once in a while but not all the time
RR Filters are set on the radio, not FLDIGI. We change filters depending on mode bandwidth. It’s hard to say why one mode decodes well and not another, but many things effect the signal btwn you & I sometimes multipath messes with one mode more than others. BK

I’m not fully certain. Mostly OREGON officials I understand, but ARES & OR officials are not getting on so well these days and that effects other things like these modes. I’m not an ARES member any longer, so I’m a bit our of the politics loop regarding the State. They do seem to be taking an interest in FLDIGI and there’s some movement toward installing FLDIGI in all OEC in all counties, but I’ve not heard anything of it lately. BTW no need for pre tone and TxID when we’re working more like a QSO btu < K7KY

I understand. Govt’s and agencies think their cellphones will work in a disaster. Some have satphones….. not sure if they will get overloaded. ARC and emergency mgmt agencies like Winlink because it works with Telnet and radio, and members don’t require a ham license. I run a VHF dig training net here in KC, and we found that running both works quite well. de w0nrp k
Gud 2 hr ur running a digital training net. I think they will become more and more important in the coming days. I hope we will eventually be training with FLDIGI & Winlink, but some things change very slowly. Meantime, we’re becoming profecient with FLDIGI suite of traffic-handling apps. We’re learning and practo odd kbd freeze agn. time to reboot I guess. anyway, we’re practicein with what we have and are ready to support civic agencies or other Amateur operations… btu < K7KY

We have seen the shift away from Amateur radio, but we figure that when disaster strikes and their systems break down they will come back to us. So we practice and train.
