The band was more fickle tonight than we thought. Check the test images to see how the band changed during the net. ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes two first-time ck-ins, Steve AJ6KW in Hurricane,UT, and Van K7VS in Medford,OR. Yet another Utah digital Op. We already know Van from the ARES District 5 net; we worked an Oregon SET exercise where Van was NCS for the state-wide net. He’s an accomplished NCS. Good to have more Oregon stations aboard.  In our early years, we were the only two OR stations on this OR & CA net.  Tonight, we logged eight Oregon stations, a smashing ORCA record.  Soon, we may be challenging the unquestionable digital-intense state, Utah!

Announcements listed our non Q-Code abbreviations and shorthand. We’ve added a couple we missed:

NCS = Net Control Station
BK = Break
BTN = back to net
TU = thank you
TNX = thanks
TX = transmit
RX = receive
HW = How
CPY = copy
VY = very
SRI = sorry
STN = station
FB = fine business ( great, good 2 hear)
RR = roger
NIL = none, nothing heard
OP = Operator
UR = your, you are
WF = waterfall
FREQ = frequency
RADO = radio Op
HZ = hertz
SIG = signal
PWR = power
Ant = antenna
2 = to
4 = for

When you ck-in QNX (Monitoring), to learn net routines before participating, pay particular attention to the weekly FLAMP Exercise. There are numerous facets to the Exercise and it unfolds briskly. You need to know your place in the Roster and be prepared to answer NCS when called. The Exercise has two parts. The basic exercise entails copying a brief message and CONFIRMING 100% reception to NCS.

The message also contains an OPTIONAL exercise. You should only work the OPTIONAL exercise when you’re comfortable with the basic exercise. If you don’t own the basic exercise, working the OPTIONAL exercise simultaneously will be difficult and may disrupt net flow. This Exercise has many facets to address in a short time. It prepares you to work confidently in stressful situations.

We use FLAMP to create a comprehensive exercise, although FLAMP may not be needed for most traffic handling. The Exercise uses the three basic NBEMS apps, FLDIGI, FLMSG, & FLAMP, your PC Editor and File Manager. Nearly all the activities necessary to digital file transfer are included in the Exercise.  You won’t need each one every time, but you’ll be ready and capable when you do need them.

Remember: When working digital nets you should have the FLDIGI option, ‘Pre-Signal Tone’, set to ZERO (0 = disabled). Sending a pre-tone is pointless when NCS calls you directly; the net expects your reply.  Pre-tone during nets should ALWAYS be done with the TUNE button. Using Pre-Signal Tone may free you from thinking about this in the moment, but it’s only a half measure; it announces your intention to transmit, but prevents you from Stopping to Look and Listen for signals before sending. The correct use of Pre-Tone is the mark of a veteran digital Operator.

We enjoyed working with you this evening and hope to see you again next Tuesday evening. We also hope to work with you on Thursday evening’s WESTERN DIGITAL NET with Steve K6ETA/NCS. 1930p/1230z, 3.581+1500, MFSK-32. Be sure to read the WDN ck-in Protocol; it’s different than ORCA.

1) Signal evaluation image (30sec)
2) Rotation list
3) Announcements

FLAMP Exercise:
Have FLAMP open. Stay focused.
Exercise is interactive and brisk.

Traffic Round: NCS calls stations in rotation. No
practice traffic? Send ‘QRU’. All traffic is sent
to NCS; only NCS REPORTS/FILLS. NCS will fill
Traffic Round messages after net on request.

Comment Round: RX reports, observations, questions,
comments (keyboard or FLMSG BLANK Form as you like)

ANNOUNCEMENTS 21/Apr/2020

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex166.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic Round with FLAMP.

A note about Pre-Tone and digital nets. Pre-toning alerts others of your intention
to transmit and gives you time to Stop, Look, and Listen before sending. When NCS
calls you, you should NOT pre-tone. Everyone expects you to transmit; pre-toning is
unnecessary. If you’re still using the Pre-Signal Tone option, please set it back to
Zero and pre-tone w/TUNE button during nets.

After resolving which Q-Codes we actually use on ORCA, we took stock of our CW/
Digital abbreviations and shorthand too. Here’s the list of our most used shorthand.
You’ll also find this list on the website Quick-Start page.

NCS = Net Control Station
BK = Break
BTN = Back To Net
TU = thank you
TNX = thanks
TX = transmit
RX = receive
HW = How
CPY = Copy
FB = fine business (great, good 2 hear)
RR = roger
NIL = none, nothing heard
OP = Operator
UR = your, you are
WF = waterfall
FREQ = frequency
RADO = radio Op
HZ = hertz
SIG = signal
PWR = power
Ant = antenna
2 = to
4 = for

During the Traffic and Comment rounds, reports and observations about the COVID-19
Pandemic are welcome. We’ve added a COVID-19 Self-Help and Information page to the
website. It has useful information for avoiding and treating COVID-19 infection.

We appreciate you taking time to email the Test images: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

To remove grab elastic bands around ears, do not grab front of mask.

Individuals should be careful not to touch their eyes, nose, and mouth when removing their face covering and wash hands immediately after removing.

Still staying healthy and working from home. Getting backlogged projects off the list. Running and doing other exercises in the early AM.

Too slow on the FLAMP tonight. Probably should drink more coffee. Better luck next time I guess.

Starting to hear about opportunitistic crimes w/ everything closed. Someone broke into a nearby bar and stole liquor. Another person was also caught stealing firewood.

73 and back to net.

Interesting info, guess this would happen eventually. No worries on FLAMP… takes a bit of time and tonite was odd.

Checked into the Sonoma emergency phone net and signals were way down. Wonder if that will affect the digi net tonight. Time will tell.

Face masks are now REQUIRED in Humboldt county as of today. I fear, as history will look back on this pandemic, the over all assessment will be too little, too late. Several meat plants are now forced to close, which is now impacting us. Even my cat food order has been delayed. Again, too little too late. Hopefully, companies can really gear up for PPE for the masses, since it is likely the only way we will see our way clear.

As states “open for business”, I fear we will be in for the next killer wave. I think I will have to continue using PPE for a long time. Latest hot case was Target employee, who later phoned media to inform all that Target has not given ANY PPE to ANY EMPLOYEES. Beware.

Now looking into replacing the lead acid batteries with LFP batteries. Lots to learn, but I’ve already discovered my solar controller will work with this new technology. My check from the feds is now dedicated to buying something around 300-500AMH batteries if I can swing it. I’m excited!

Had some good sun this afternoon, and batteries are full.

73 all, be safe!

Jaye ke6sls

Great report Jaye. Suprised Humboldt took so long to require masks… but not even sure that we’re required to wear them here! Odd… stay safe!

W7ZAP de AJ6KW Yes, my RXid was on and I did notice that the limits on the red frame adjusted. It must have just been band conditions that kept me from getting the middle blocks. I received the pic ok. Tks for the help. Good signal from you tonight. I use a ground mounted 30 ft antenna with a set of wire radials a few inches under the surface. It looks like and does work as a flagpole. I use a tuner to operate it on 80-10 meters. It was manufactured by ZeroFive in the Midwest. have a good night. 73
