Another net with challenging band conditions. Fortunately Brad WA7HHE was able to relay 3 stations at ck-in (N7SND, KG7PBX, W7WSV). Poor band makes digital networking more difficult. The weekly FLAMP exercise becomes more challenging for NCS when there are numerous stations participating.

Making mistakes or having software/station issues provide learning moments for us all. At the beginning of the FLAMP exercise Doug K7KY listed the modes he would use (THOR-50×2, MFSK-64 and MFSK-32), sent four TxIDs,  and sent the header block (0) twice.  Now, everyone has the information and time necessary to change mode manually w/o missing any blocks.  On the 1st pass, at least four stations did not copy the TxID and subsequently copied nothing. Had they changed mode manually, they may have copied the file. We need to be alert and agile about modes; we may be working with difficult HF condx for some time. We had another opportunity for ‘manual-mode-selection’ when Doug asked Brad to relay missing blocks in MFSK-16, but neglected to remind Brad to enable TxID.

Another unusual twist in the FLAMP exercise was the relay by Greg KG7DMI. Doug asked Greg to relay the whole file (4A8B). It appears Greg used the ‘To TxQ’ button on the RX tab.  This did send the correct file, but FLAMP gave it a different ID# (90B6) so the receiving FLAMP list it as a new file and none of the blocks in this file will fill the original file (4A8B).  Same content, but a new file with different FLAMP ID#. Both files,  (4A8B) &  (90B6)  are our original file (ex121.txt), but neither can be used to fill the other. Remember to note this  unique FLAMP hexadecimal ID; it’s key to working with numerous files and sorting out FLAMP issues.

We received an email from Phil KJ6GQW following the net:

Tried to check-in 6 times last night. Received flamp: 1) at 100 %, 2) 46%, 3) at 86% and 40 at 0%. Received 4 flmsg.

Unusual that we could hear both Jaye KE6SLS and Howard KB6NN, also in Eureka,CA, but not Phil who usually has a solid signal here.  No one responded when we asked for relays, so it appears no one copied him. Maybe an anomaly in his station or the band singled him out for extra bother.  We occasionally copy stations as far off as UT on our dummy loads while practicing for the net.

Evaluation images from tonight’s net:

RX: W1EEP UT RX: KE6SLS CA RX: KB6NN CA
RX: W1EEP UT
RX: KE6SLS CA

Thanks for working with us again through challenging band conditions. I appreciate the opportunity to learn and improve my digital radio skills and couldn’t do it without your participation. Hope to see you on the WF again next Tuesday!
73,
Mindy W7ZAP

ANNOUNCEMENTS 28/MAY/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex121.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/
FLAMP exercise. If you complete the optional exercise within, send that file
to NCS in the Traffic round using FLAMP.

We now send the Signal Evaluation Image at the beginning and end of net. It
reveals changes in the band over time. Please email your images and we’ll
publish them in the Net Report.

Pre-Tone:
Don’t forget to pre-tone when doubles are likely. Last week we had a couple
doubles following the Comment round when we opened Comments to everyone.
It only takes a moment and goes a long way toward eliminating avoidable doubles.
That said, we have fewer doubles than many digital nets. Difficult band condx
can overcome our best stratagies and tactics.

Please keep Rick K0KEX in Springfield,MO in mind. The last few days has seen
terrible tornados ripping through Missouri.

Bugger, I turned off RXID and missed mode change 1st round!

Flamp died on second pass. It thought it had blk 1 but didn’t, just reported 2&3 missing, on second pass, it died trying to save the file.

My buddy Harold lost two homes right next to him today. Seen report on news and had a cow, thank god his home didn’t burn, but the one exploded and burned, wind then

blew flames into next house and burned it down too–both a complete loss, 5 homeless, no human losses, but 3 cats died before rescue :( Red Cross was on scene for

Paid my respects to our fallen at the cemetary up the road, Myrtle Grove. Nice honor gaurd and enjoyed the rememberances–may we always remember. Topped it off with

a nice steak on the BBQ and some homemade hashbrowns with Onions and bell peppers, topped off with some BBQ mushrooms!

SHORTWAVE RADIOGRAM

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
