ORCA welcomes two stations; Chris KK6KFB in Morgan Hill,CA and a local friend, James KF7KVP in Brookings,OR. I appreciate the opportunity to practice and hone my digital & NCS skills on this net. It seems each time I’m on the air, I always learn something new or reaffirm a lesson learned. My re-occurring lesson is to slow down and a little ‘dead air’ is OK. I asked Bill K6QOG to relay check-in to look for stations that I didn’t hear. There was a long silence after he put out the call; I was hasty in thinking he may have had a station issue, so I sent NIL and moved on.  Bill was copying a relay from Bob N7RBP in Medford,OR, a near-by area I don’t hear when the band is long. My bad and lesson learned. I get into a go-go-go mode when in the NCS hot seat. I need to allow enough time for members to respond.

The FLAMP exercise was off to a flying start, but ran into difficulty when we began to work stations to our south-south/east. THOR-100 was doing well until then. Eventually, we had accept we were not going to fill those stations. They could no longer hear us. Usually, we can persist and fill every station, but not tonight. The band was long and solid for some stations and totally dropped others. This led us to consider starting the net an hour earlier until conditions improve. Next week we’ll begin the net at 1830 PST/0230 Z; early check-in as usual. Our hope is that we’ll catch a window of better propagation before the band changes and drops half the net. We’ll see how it goes for all involved and decide from there. I suspect that deteriorating band conditions may be in our future with Maunder Minimum just beginning.

ANNOUNCEMENTS 19/February/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex106.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/
FLAMP exercise. If you complete the optional exercise, send the file to NCS
in the Traffic round tonight or any net.

Did you work Int’l SATERN Digital Net on Saturday morning, 16Feb? Coupled
with our currently difficult band conditions was a CW contest that attracted
CW contesters to the data portion of 20m. Good thing these contests don’t
happen every week. Most impressive was the performance of MFSK-128 & Olivia
16/1000 with strong CW signals on top of every transmission. While dealing
with multiple CW signal within the envelope, many were able to complete the
file. Sometimes, NCS was printing perfectly with three CW signals on top.

During Traffic Round, you’re welcome to send practice traffic in a mode
you think the band will support. Remember to activate TxID b4 mode change.
Experimenting with modes will help us chose the best mode for condx, saving
time and resources.

Did you work Int’l SATERN Digital Net on Saturday morning, 16Feb? Coupled with our currently difficult band conditions was a CW contest that attracted CW contesters to the data portion of 20m. Good thing these contests don’t happen every week. Most impressive was the performance of MFSK-128 & Olivia 16/1000 with strong CW signals on top of every transmission. While dealing with multiple CW signal within the envelope, many were able to complete the file.sas printing perfectly with three CW signals on top.
