Although band condx were better than recent weeks, they were certainly up & down. Some stations faded and then resurged. Our only double tonight was due to fading. We’ve become quite handy with pre-tone for avoiding doubles.
Occasionally, someone will suggest we eliminate calling each station for their REPORT during the weekly exercise. Why not let the stations needing fill REPORT w/o prompt? If you’ve participated in nets using this format, you know how chaotic it can become when numerous stations try to REPORT at once. Particularly on HF nets when some stations are not copying all other stations . Even pretone won’t prevent these doubles. The TX of a CALLSIGN & REPORT takes about a minute in MFSK-32. Not much net time for an efficient polling of FLAMP REPORTS.
Speaking of REPORTS, here’s a useful comment by Mindy W7ZAP in the Comment round:
“In FLAMP, if you’re doing a fill and see that the file name is ‘unassigned’, this means the RX station did not copy the preamble (block 0) in addition to the blocks they have listed as missing (ex: 1,4). You can add a “0” to the ‘Missing’ field (0,1,4), or relay the whole file by deleting Missing block numbers and pressing ‘Relay’.”
ORCA welcomes Ken AG6SV in Bloomfield,CA and Pat KA7PAT in Coquille,OR. Pat has sked conflict with other nets, so he may be occasional or late to ORCA. I hope he stays in touch as we have very few nearby OR stations and we want to be familiar with our digital neighbors in emergencies.

Tonight’s weekly FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex27.txt’, an optional FLMSG
ICS-213 exercise using tabs, ‘Originator’ & ‘Responder’. Parse it carefully.
Return your file in FLMSG to NCS during TRAFFIC, or send your own practice
message, or QRU.
I’ve been posting to LINUXHAMS for info about TxID & AFC. After a couple
replies, Dave W1HKJ stepped in with ‘clarification’. Some of his comments:
“RsID will set the frequency to within +/- 3 Hz of the actual signal center.
You should always use AFC on these modes: PSK, QPSK, PSKR, 8PSK, MFSK.

Net control, use TxID and AFC. Do not use RxID*
Net participants, use RxID and AFC. Do not use TxID.”
* Dave’s recommendation is for regular/emergency digital nets. Here, you are
free to change modes independent of NCS, so NCS needs RxID & TxID active. If
you change modes, Activate TxID until you change back to the net working mode.
There’s more info in the thread than specified in the manual. Search for:
linuxhams groups.io. Topic: ‘Combined function of AFC & TXid’.
Conducting the net w/o TxID helps reduce overall net time, but isn’t essential
to ORCA. It’s good form to operate as efficiently as we can, but don’t fret if
you forget now & then. Practice will put ongoing station adjustments in the
background. Thanks for practicing with us. Your participation makes traffic
practice more realistic and effective.

In FLAMP, if you’re doing a fill and see that the file name is unassigned, this means the RX station did not copy the preamble (block 0) in addition to the blocks they have listed as missing (ex: 1,4). You can add a “0” to the missing field (0,1,4) or relay the whole file by deleting missing files and press ‘Relay’.
