For most of us, 80m was reminiscent of Summer band condx. NCS path to some stations was excellent. OFDM-500F CONFIRMED 4 stations in a single transmission; 2 stations in Utah, one in Washington, and one in Nevada. Of that first transmission, one California station missed only one block, another station copied nothing. Two Utah stations also copied no blocks. Even with excellent band condx, solid path is important for OFDM. Antenna performance and terrain are major path qualifiers. When we have poor path to Jaye KE6SLS in Eureka,CA, we usually have difficulty with John KS6M in Oakland,CA too. But not this evening; John missed a single block of OFDM-500F. Paths can be very narrow.

The NBEMS Exercise was interesting tonight. We used a generic PC Text Editor instead of FLMSG. Four stations aced it. Most participants had NBEMS traffic-handling fundamentals perfect, but five stations missed one instruction detail. A big difference in Exercise file block-size (2-7) indicated varying instruction comprehension. Upon review, some missed this instruction: ‘…copy the 1st SENTENCE of the 3nd PARAGRAPH’, and sent the whole paragraph. NBEMS Exercises have two points of focus, NBEMS traffic-handling routines, and instruction parsing. Understanding and implementing written instructions comes easily to some, but most of us have to develop this skill intentionally. Misunderstood instructions are unlikely to be implemented correctly.

We don’t usually publish NBEMS Exercise reviews, but sometimes it’s helpful. ORCA Ops are generally self-motivated, self-evaluating, and self-correcting. We and many ORCA veterans are available to help incoming Ops learn net routines and NBEMS app details, off-net by email, telephone, and radio.

Digital Net News:  If you worked Western Digital Net last Thursday, you already know that Brad WA7HHE was the Net Control
Station. Hats-Off to Brad! He did an excellent job. Turns out, he’s been working with Don KJ7VGV for awhile now. Brad lives in
Cedar City,UT; elevation 6000′. His signal is widely heard. Obviously, Brad has been practicing in the shadows. His net was
organized and brisk, and his Macros worked well. It’s a big plus for Western Digital Net and welcome assistance for Don &
Jaye KE6SlS.

We value QNX Ck-Ins the same as Active. If you’re Monitoring to learn net operations before participating, Thank You. Your
first Active participation will be smoother for you and the net. Time permitting, we call for Monitoring station Comments after the
Active-station Comment Round. Now, we’re asking you for a little additional support. We’d like monitoring stations to also email
the opening/closing Test image for the Net Report.  These images give a graphic indication of band condx during the net and
pathways between stations. They add valuable content to Net Reports, and give practice locating and manipulating files in your
PC file system.

Please send the actual Test images, not screen captures. Windows FLDIGI saves images in, ~/urname/FL_APPS/fldigi.files/im
ages/. Linux FLDIGI saves images in, ~/urname/.fldigi/images/. Email images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com This gives realistic
practice locating files in the PC file system. It becomes important when there’s no receiver available and you’re holding
undeliverable traffic.

In February, we’ll revisit Daisy-Chaining Macros for the benefit of incoming stations. For next week’s(07/Feb/23) NBEMS
Exercise, we’ll again make a Macro on-the-fly instead of our usual file-manipulation Exercise. The Exercise will contain the
Macro TEXT; you’ll choose the necessary Tags. You need at minimum 3 Tags to ID & Start/Stop transmission. Questions b4

ORCA < WA7HHE hope everyone is surviving the our deep freeze Wx from the North Pole. Zero degrees this
morning and currently +10 degs. Woodburning stove keeping the house warm and toasty.

One thing that’s really great about amateur radio is all the nice people you meet. Just want to send a shoutout to those
sharing their skills as I place my toe in NCS waters. Very much appreciate the tips. If anyone would like to take on
WDN NCS, great mentors, all it takes is some dedication and practice.

Rough week this week.  Started Saturday pm with a quick shower. Used
the toilet and realized things stopped going down hill!  Been using
*very little* water since.  Thought the navy shower days were over!

I had a wonderful, long shower AND flushed the toilet 😄

Got some good news from VA doc.  A small win for me and pharmaceuticals.

Sun all week.  Solar controller finally went into by-pass.  Nice to
have the big battery at full again.  I see rain coming this week, so
the sun break was perfect.  Hopefully we’ll keep the rain averages up
for February.

With the rain will come warmer temps and no frosty mornings.  This
year I really am looking forward to spring and sunnier & warmer temps.

think stns will copy, then filling missing blocks with a slightly slower mode… working your way down in speed. No

comments, a second signal in MFSK64 came on, however, I still held 100% copy on
your station.  That was very interesting as both signals were very strong, yet
the 64 did not distort copy on the 32 signal.    Cool 😄

Digital Net News:  If you worked Western Digital Net last Thursday, you already know that Brad WA7HHE was the Net Control Station. Hats-Off to Brad! He did an excellent job. Turns out, he’s been working with Don KJ7VGV for awhile now. Brad lives in Cedar City,UT; elevation 6000’. His signal is widely heard. Obviously, Brad has been practicing in the shadows. His net was organized and brisk, and his Macros worked well. It’s a big plus for Western Digital Net and welcome assistance for Don & Jaye KE6SlS.

We value QNX Ck-Ins the same as Active. If you’re Monitoring to learn net operations before participating, Thank
You. Your first Active participation will be smoother for you and the net. Time permitting, we call for Monitoring station Comments after the Active-station Comment Round. Now, we’re asking you for a little additional support. We’d like monitoring stations to also email the opening/closing Test image for the Net Report.  These images give a graphic indication of band condx during the net and pathways between stations. They add valuable content to Net Reports, and give practice locating and manipulating files in your PC file system.

Please send the actual Test images, not screen captures. Windows FLDIGI saves images in, ~/urname/FL_APPS/fldi
gi.files/images/. Linux FLDIGI saves images in, ~/urname/.fldigi/images/.  Email images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com
This gives realistic practice locating files in the PC file system. It becomes important when there’s no receiver
available and you’re holding undeliverable traffic.

In February, we’ll revisit Daisy-Chaining Macros for the benefit of incoming stations. For next week’s(07/Feb/23)
NBEMS Exercise, we’ll again make a Macro on-the-fly instead of our usual file-manipulation Exercise. The Exercise
will contain the Macro TEXT; you’ll choose the necessary Tags. You need at minimum 3 Tags to ID & Start/Stop
