Band condx were not good by any measure, but sufficient for passing digital traffic. We missed a before-net check and didn’t notice Doug K7KY’s power was 15w for 90% of Ck-In. We were back to 35w in time to catch a DX station, Neil W0NRP in Lee’s Summit,MO. His path, MO<>OR, was sufficient to CONFIRM files in the after-net Monitor’s Session. The digital modes really shine in unfavorable band condx. Consider our Phone net colleagues; their nets are really difficult these days.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes two new stations, Mike KC7MAW in Port Orchard,WA, and Claude KB7WB in Nine Mile Falls,WA. We’ll ask them to log in QNX and Monitor a few sessions to learn net protocols and the FLAMP Exercise. And, Welcome back to Larry N7SND in Cedar City,UT. We hold a brief Monitor’s Session after net to FILL/CONFIRM files for Monitoring stations working the FLAMP Exercise silently. This is the best path for preparing to ck-in Active and work the FLAMP Exercise.

Did you notice Roster demographics tonight? We have nine stations in Utah, and six in Washington. There’s been a steady increase in Northern Washington stations lately. Good on them for conducting digital training on VHF. VHF/UHF is excellent for learning NBEMS software before matriculating to HF where propagation alone is challenging.

Again tonight the FLAMP Exercise was full, eight Active stations. We Filled some stations by Relay. We look for opportunities to work Relays. Relays are our pathway through difficult band condx; Relay practice is essential. FLAMP enables you to Relay any blocks you’ve decoded, even when you’ve not yet CONFIRMED the complete file. That’s handy. Good work with the newest FLAMP Advanced Exercise; 80% Aced it. This Exercise simulates creating/editing traffic before forwarding.

Occasionally, someone urges us to augment ck-in with internet apps like NetLogger. We prefer to train as we may have to work in emergency conditions. Internet aside, there may be no commercial power, adverse WX, and confusion. We train and practice as we expect to work. If conditions are not dire, we’ll be even better prepared. Thanks for your ongoing support. Without your interest and participation we would not be a digital Training net. Your training and practice creates a weekly working model of efficient and effective digital networking. Others are learning from your example.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex213.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP Exercise.
If you complete the OPTIONAL/ADVANCED Exercise within, send that file to NCS in the Traffic
Round with FLAMP.

Thanks for working the FLAMP Exercise last session. CONFIRMING 8 stations usually takes all
three transmissions, creating opportunities for Relays. Filling stations by Relay is a powerful
FLAMP feature. Fill blocks can be Relayed by any station with the needed blocks even before
they’ve CONFIRMED 100% copy.

Experimenting with OFDM modes continues. Thanks to those helping explore the new mode. You
need FLDIGI Alpha V4.1.18.17 – .22 to test OFDM. If OFDM passes muster with Dave W1HKJ, it
will be included in stable version 4.1.19. When/if this happens, we’ll be using OFDM in the weekly
FLAMP Exercise. FLDIGI Alpha versions: http://www.w1hkj.com/alpha/fldigi/

Locking FLDIGI on 3.581+1500 is important. It effects how well your station copies net
signals and how well others copy you. Check this email observation by Darrell W6ADZ:
‘Something I noticed from watching the WF, very few stations were right at 1500.
Some a few Hz above and some a few Hz below, with about a quarter right on.’

OFDM is about three times more tuning-sensitive than MFSK. It doesn’t tolerate much difference
between TX & RX stations; more than 5hz degrades decoding. MFSK is also sensitive about tuning,
but less so than OFDM. You may notice during nets that some stations are not right on 1500wf.
A couple hertz is not out-of-spec for Amateur radios, but a difference between TX & RX will hinder
decoding depending on mode and band condx. Digital nets on 3.581 generally use MFSK-32 for net
operations. MFSK can tolerate a 16hz offset before decoding degrades. If you’re not on the net
frequency, it may cause NCS to miss some or all of your transmission. If your soundcard is not
calibrated, you may not be where you think you are. Check your sound card calibration with FLDIGI’s
WWV Mode. FLDIGI Manual 4.1.15, sec3.50, WWV codec PPM measurement. This is a very easy
calibration; you can do it while surfing.

Another tuning feature that effects decoding is RX signal amplitude. This can be fine-tuned in the
waterfall O-Scope (SIG Button). The RX waveform should be just within the gray lines. FLDIGI
Manual 4.1.15, sec3.9, RX/TX Audio Levels.

Our most frequent FLAMP Exercise error involves newer Ops copying the file 100% and immediately
working the OPTIONAL/ADVANCED Exercise without CONFIRMING 100% copy when NCS calls for
REPORTS. When stations ignore REPORT calls, but later send the OPTIONAL/ADVANCED file for Traffic,
it’s obvious why they didn’t reply. They began working the Advanced exercise before completing the
primary. Reading and understanding the Exercise instructions is crucial to working the Exercise
correctly. See the ‘New Ops’ tab at: http://orcadigitalnet.com/quick-start/

When you’re reading and implementing written instructions consistently on a Training net, you’ll
be confident and capable on a busy Emergency Net.

Thanks for emailing the ORIGINAL Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com
(more file location/manipulation practice) Your test images reflect your path to NCS.

:sb:60 Dr. Doom’s Prediction on COVID-19 Spike May Be Coming True
:mg:661 The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had to say today: “CDC director gives emotional warning of ‘impending doom’ around Covid-19.”

The case rate is up 10 percent from where it was a week ago. If you recall, I’ve been saying that April and May could be bad, really bad. Spring has sprung and everyone is “feeling upbeat” and therefore the protections and mitigation measures have been relaxed in states and local communities. The variants of the virus are spreading like wildfire.

ORCA < WA7HHE, with the 4th Covid wave now coming across the nation is disheartening to see a disregard for Medical Science. Unfortunately this is not new. In the early 1900’s, local Sheep-herders were challenged by our cities doctor for grazing their sheep at our canyon steam flowing into the City. Local city residents obtained their drinking water from the stream as it flowed through the city. The doctors challenge went to court, the county judge asked the doctor if he could see the bacteria he claimed were in the water supply. The doctor stated yes, with his microscope and would obtain it if need be. The judge ruled since the bacteria could not be scene with the naked eye the case was dismissed. Court records republished from our South West Utah Health Department Magazine.

Now have old TS-570D back on the air with JS8CALL on 40M using my old Pi 3. Will leave it on 24/7 for next week to evaluate the program’s features. Fun to see the dx stations pop up on my heard screen. This rig and Pi 3 are adding extra load on my LIPO4 battery, which has put up with the extra load extremely well. Shack is now VERY busy with little room left for cats to play!

So far our COVID-19 numbers have fallen, only 10 yesterday.

Great wx today. not so much wind and sun all day.

Good to hear so many signals tonight. Glad the band is in
MUCH bettery shape!

Stay well and enjoy the sunshine and rising temps

The THOR modes did well tonight. I can see the band is poor for many tonight. Thanks for sending your test images.

Hate to see CV19 cases increasing again. Curry county has closed restaurants to indoor dining again. Wishing all good health.

Thanks to all for taking the time to work w/us and hope to see you all on the WF again soon!
