After an intense 3 days of messing with Win8.1 & Linux Mint 21.1 I thought I was ahead of the game, but no. On Tuesday I even took down the 210′ doublet for inspection. The culprit appears to be the LDG 4:1 balun. The 2nd one to fail. They’re not waterproof. They’re installed under the eves, safe from rain, but still subject to Oregon humidity. The upshot was my station was down at net time and Mindy had to run solo. She did a great job. Once I recovered some composure, I enjoyed watching the net unfold. It really runs efficiently, thanks to you guys. Our Relay skills were evident tonight, just as they were last Thursday on Western Digital Net.

Current stable NBEMS versions:
FLDIGI v4.1.26
FLMSG v4.0.20
FLAMP v2.2.07

Only John KS6M listed all 3 current versions. Adopting the latest version has some risk; occasionally, there’s a bug or two in the code. Still, when Dave W1HKJ adds new features, they may not be available in previous versions. This was the case when Dave added OFDM. We usually wait a week or two to see how the new version works for others.

In case you missed Lamar AE6LJ’s comments this evening, here’s an excerpt:

“This week makes it two years now I’ve been participating in this most original and exciting net. These exercises showcase what is best about digital Ham radio and it is such a pleasure working with disciplined operators giving it their best. Thanks Doug, Mindy and everyone I’ve met and worked with here. BTNCS < AE6LJ”

It doesn’t seem like two years have passed since Lamar joined us, but time seems to have accelerated lately. When we see comments like Lamar’s, we immediately think of all of you. Lamar’s right about the caliber of Ops in this network. He summed it up nicely, “…it is such a pleasure working with disciplined operators giving it their best.” For us, it’s an honor and pleasure to work with you. ORCA Ops will be among those who lead Amateur digital operations in the years ahead.

If you’ve been with us for awhile, you know that many of our routines and conventions originated with our teammates. ORCA DIGITAL NET & Western Digital Net are two faces of one network. Thanks to every Op that participated and contributed along the way. We’ve done well together and we deeply appreciate belonging to the ORCA team.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise features the FLMSG Radiogram form. Next session, 06/Jun/23, Don KJ7VGV will conduct the NBEMS Exercise.
Don & Bruno KG7VVN regularly conduct NBEMS Exercises the 1st Tuesday every month. You too can conduct ORCA NBEMS Exercises.
We’ll help you get grounded and soon you’ll be running Exercises like a veteran. You’ll develop broader digital networking skills and be
better prepared for emergency traffic-handling.

If you worked Western Digital Net last Thursday, you couldn’t help being impressed with how well teamwork overcame very difficult
band condx. Relays were the order of the evening and we had a ton of Relays. Don KJ7VGV was outstanding among a steller Relay
team. Don’s remote desert cabin location and a solid 80m signal is perfect for ORCA & WDN Relays. Every net event requied some level
of Relay. When we have to work this hard to conduct a net, imagine the challenge for phone nets.

Speaking of phone nets, our County just dropped out of the upcoming SET Exercise because their network is held for ransom. County
Amateurs plan to participate anyway. Due to mountainous terraine, the 3 principle cities need HF to contact County EOC. We usually
need Relays to contact nearby stations. We’re hoping a few of you will support us for SET on 13/Jun/23. These are Phone nets. Our
County has no Amateur digital infrastructure, only the EOC Winlink station. How’s that for odd? Home County to ORCA DIGITAL NET
has only two Ops interested in digital EMCOMM practice.

We’ll let you know when we’ll practice. SET is 13/Jun/23. We are tasked with communicating with adjacent Counties on HF. All Phone,
no Digital. n°fyncy

Tonight’s exercise begins in MFSK-64 (240wpm,1260hz,100%,FEC). We’ll fill in
THOR-50×1 (176wpm,900hz,FEC) & MFSK-32 (120wpm, 630z,100%,FEC).

Doug would normally run the NBEMS exe, but he’s having stn issues and has been working to resolve them all
week. Seems it’s 1 step fwd & 2 back. At least his antenna is working well- I’m using it tonight. Big
improvement on band condx! UT is having rough copy though.
Tnx Don for the relay.

Here’s the breakdown of RX by modes:
MFSK-64: 7 stns
THOR-50×1: 0 stns
MFSK-32: 1 stn

Tnx to John KS6M for email re: FLAMP

Cramming in my studies for extra! Plan to upgrade next local testing session, was getting consistantly 70% which is just shy to pass,
last practice test I did I got 81%, so improving :).

Pulled an old battery I had out and am trying to nurse it into some sort of usability, want to see if I can get it to a usable state for off
grid emergency radio operation capability. After a few charge/discharge cycles will measure its capacity and do some testing with HF rig
on it.

Got my macro fixed for ORCA relays, will be ready and proper next time ;).

Also got a CAT7 tourniquet in today, glad to be finally upping my first aid preparedness!

73s, see everyone next net!

Great job there W7ZAP solo-ing NCS duties tonight. You’re such a pro.

Only UT station I was able to copy tonight at ck-n was KA7SEZ. Very good copy on close-in stations this eve. Pretty much nonexistant though outside that. Nontheless, everyone’s FLAmp reports were 100% for me save April’s W7ANC.

This week makes it two years now I’ve been participating in this most original and exciting net. These exercises showcase what is best about digital Ham radio and it is such a pleasure working with disciplined operators giving it their best. Thanks Doug, Mindy and everyone I’ve met and worked with here.

Tough copy out of UT. And thanks for the ORCA compliment. Without you guys we’d just be here by ourselves… we all make an

ORCA < WB7EUX – Radio has taken a back seat for another week as we continue with planting. Dailceee turning our grass pastures into
tall, waving, green beauties. Will be a trick to mow them properly when they do dry out. Same for our interior lawn.

Hats off to April, Emery, and Mindy for an important learning opportunity!

Breaking news: Kathy and I celebrate our 48th tomorrow!

Thanks to Doug and Mindy for another training opportunity.

All is well. 73 de WB7EUX

A bit cloudy at the cabin but no lightning so far. Start pouring cement in the east wall tomorrow.
Weather is predicted to have another low settle over the Western states next week. Have to wait
and see what happens. Have another antenna on the roof and could see one leg dangling over the edge.
Looks like a rope broke will have to fix it tomorrow. That antenna is for 40 meter and not needed.
Hope all is well and see all of you this Thursday on WDN.

On KS6M I had everything except block 3. ;)

I will reiterate last weeks comments that 80m will continue to be
difficult as we near solstice. To reduce noise, lower your RF gain
and turn on your attenuators. This allows your radio the best chance
to hear signals that would otherwise be wiped out in the noise. It
may sound counter-intuitive, however, it works by increasing signal
to noise.

The marine layer has FINALLY allowed some sun to shine into this part
of Humboldt county this afternoon/evening! It’s been approximately
7 days since last sun day!

KFS SDR is running on the tough book again tonight. With the massive
antennas, it was able to hear stations I could not hear at all. I was
able to copy Tom, however, the SDR couldn’t. Same with April & Emery.
These are the cndx summertime brings. Great work on our RELAYS tonight.

I am happy to report that A.R.S. KE6SLS confirmed a SUNSET happend
tonight DIRECTLY over Humboldt bay tonight! :)

I’ll stick around for after-net and get my fills. Between NCS & I,
we can complete April’s FLA!

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!
