The net was quite different tonight at our end; I hope it seemed the same at your end. I wanted to practice running the net alone. I’ve not done it for a couple years now. In 2016 we modified an exercise Dave K7DV was running on the Idaho ERC Digital Net. It evolved into our weekly FLAMP exercise. Mindy W7ZAP ran that portion of the net every week. When I blew up my right hand in February 2017, Mindy took over all NCS duties for a couple months while I healed and learned to type w/o my middle right finger. Eventually, we returned to dual NCS operations. It was time to check and refresh my solo NCS skills. It went well and I really enjoyed the net. Thanks for your attention and support. It’s a pleasure to work with each of you.

Welcome to Doug W7DBE in Reno,NV. Three Dougs on tonight is an ORCA first. I hope Doug W7DBE sticks around as Doug KA7FOO is leaving Reno for the open road soon. He’ll be living large on the highways and byways of America. I hope he stays with us from the hinterlands. Clifford N0LKC usually checks in from campgrounds during winter, but we only heard him once last winter. Bruce KB7VX is a traveling medical technician and well experienced with field antennas. We always enjoy working field stations. And, welcome back to Larry N7SND. He’s checked in&out by relay the last couple months; tonight he was back with a solid signal from Cedar City,UT.

When you think of the difficulties we have with propagation, imagine what it’s like for Phone net folks. Band condx are hammering the Phone nets, that’s for sure. We usually check into the Oregon Emergency Net every night; w/o extensive relaying, there wouldn’t be a net. I really appreciate digital operations. Digital radio operations can be fussy and problematic, but tough band condx are far less a problem for digital communications. If we really are entering a Maunder Minimum cycle, digital operations will be even more important to emergency communications.

Tonight’s images reflect the uptick in propagation and changing condx during the net. Nearby stations do well at the outset, but not so well as the band goes long later in the evening. Distant stations like Gene W1EEP in Pine Valley,UT, enjoyed better propagation as the evening progressed. We’ve included an additional image sent by John KS6M. His ARC, the Oakland Radio Communication Association is also known as ORCA.

ANNOUNCEMENTS 30/July/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex130.txt’, an FLDIGI/ FLAMP/
FLMSG exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that
file to NCS in the Traffic round with FLAMP.

Tonight, I’m operating solo. Mindy W7ZAP and I usually alternate between
running the net and running the FLAMP exercise. Working a portion of the
net every week keeps us up to speed. Occasionally, we want to practice
working alone. I’m not nervous; I have excellent back-up (-:

2 Notes for new stations: Read the Preamble and review the website.
It’s best to check ‘in&out’ for a few sessions to learn net routines.
If you plan to participate, ck-in with your ‘CALLSIGN’ only. To Monitor
the net, ck-in with, ‘callsign in&out’. Monitoring Ops are not engaged
during the net. We do call ‘in&out’ stations after the Comment round
when we have time.

The weekly FLAMP exercises explore skills beyond basic FLAMP operations.
Each exercise includes an OPTIONAL exercise in file creation/manipulation
between the PC operating system and FLAMP.

During our dry-run b4 the net, the new FLMSG 4.0.11 crashed. I’ve returned
to v4.0.8. A couple ORCA Ops are still having macro/Olivia issues with
FLDIGI 4.1.06. YMMV

Thanks for emailing the ORCA test images. Now, with images from net start
and end, we have a better indication of band condx for specific paths.

One note on our FLmsg, it would be nice to up the block size to decrease send time. Perhaps block size of 128. W1EEP had issues like I did during one net where FLamp just won’t play nice In the spirit of EX130, I use Mint Linux 18.2 here in my radio shack. Really kicks butt.

Picked up a huge package of baby back ribs and bbq’d half of them and drove my neighbor crazy–I’ll invite them over for the second half! Had a heavy marine layer this AM but sun and slight breeze this pm with NO SMOKE today! Cats took full advantage of the setting sun tonight, basking on the back patio.

Good work on he SOLO NCS tonight Doug! Great hearing all the stations as well.

de KA7FOO
Last night was the last night for the Washoe Digital Group FlDigi net. There is no new NCS / NM for the net as of yet. This is due to my plans on being on the road full time at the end of August. Furthermore this Saturday will be my last WCARES training meeting. I was the first ham to start / configure / operate the ham station in the Regional EOC 12 – 13 years ago at the same time the WC EM Arron Keniston took the position.

Lots of time, energy, and money prepping the RV for the “Full Time RV’in” about to commence. But some of the effort is long over due anyway. Per the ORCA Net I will be checking-in from the road / parks / dispersed camping. As per my FlAmp problems the program would not track the modes from FlDigi. Configure buttons turned on for some reason!

About 5 degrees cooler this week, lower to mid 90’s.
See you digi-hams next week.

SHORTWAVE RADIOGRAM

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
