Well, tonight was one to remember. Really tough band condx. We had to abandon MFSK-32 & 16 and we completed most of the net in THOR-22. All but two stations copied well in THOR-22. We couldn’t connect Erik KK6RKY & Christine AE7OK. Soon after closing, Clifford N0LKC checked in from a campground in NM with 10w! The band was certainly long. We also welcomed two Ops new to ORCA, John W6ZKH in Visalia,CA and Mike AE7XB in Port Orchard,WA.

We dropped our usual net outline to experiment with THOR-22. I needed to know that the bulk of the net could copy the mode, so we went around the group for copy reports. I also tried to connect Erik with Olivia 8/500, but no joy. I usually hear Erik very well, but not so for the last few weeks. Skipping our weekly FLAMP session, Announcements, and the Traffic round, we had a round of Comments before closing.

Rick N6IET was a big help with relays tonight. We’ll be making much more use of relays this winter it appears. During our weekly training nets, we won’t try to work practice traffic with every station on relay, but we will certainly do this with formal traffic. And, we’ll relay traffic off the net frequency so’s not to interrupt net business. We usually have too many Ops to pass practice traffic via relay and complete the net in an hour or so.

When the band is long like tonight, we’ll depend on our more distant Ops in UT & ID to relay the nearby stations. It’s a good thing we’ve outgrown our early coverage of 200 – 300mi. Speaking of our distant members, you might enjoy visiting the North America Idaho ERC HF Digital Net. They meet every Wednesday @ 1800p 3.581 (same freq as ORCA), W7RUG Bliss NCS & Dave N7DV NCS/alt.

They usually have interesting exercises in FLMSG & FLAMP. Working with different digital nets is a good way to practice and increase our digital skills. I enjoy working with other net; it helps me relate to the idle time you experience. NCS is busy, but there’s lots of blank time for the participants. I try to keep this in mind during our nets.

Thanks for your patience and focus while we sorted out the best mode for condx. I’d like to see more mode experimenting. For your traffic, feel free to choose a mode you think will work. We should do more with THOR-22 and give THOR 50×1 a try too.

Canceling the Traffic round interrupted returning exercise #5 to NCS. You can do this next week if you like. All our exercises are optional. You can always send you own practice/formal traffic, an image, or just QRU, as you like.

My print of our image sent by Gene W1EEP (Tnx) in UT (Left) and Gene’s print of the image sent during net.  I seldom see our image sent from the field.  Gene’s image is a bit larger; he may have taken it from the website.

Well, Doug, that was pretty much 100%. But your signal is about 6 dB better than Mindy’s here. Has been for the past half dozen sessions or so. I had thought something happened to Mondy’s antenna, but i guess it’s just the difference in orientation. But she used to be equal in signal strength to you.

Anyway, you were varying between -5 and +3 dB, and she was varying between -8 and -2 dB most of the time.

But when her (or anybody’s) signal drops to about -10 dB, copy percentage goes way down both

with MFSK32 and THOR22. So I am not seeing the advantage of Thor22.

N6IET Rick…. I agree about THOR we tried it some time ago and actually liked it but found MFSK-32 much better at the time. I’ll have to do more with it now, comparing it to known modes it did a good job tonight when some were not doing well with 32. Mindy & I appreciate your interest and depth in propagation and signals… our signal reports have been improving very nicely and are becoming much more useful to the net OPs thanks for taking time for experimenting lll btu < K7KY

Well, I really hate this navigation button in the middle of my keyboard. I’m going to disable it as soon as i can figure out how. When I accidentally tap it, my cursor goes to some unknown place and sometimes I find new text already in the Tx buffer that I have no idea where it came from.

Anyway, I was going to say that my distance from most stations was probably an advantage to me, this evening because of the long skip conditions on 80m.

I’m going to send you an article that Kat K6HTN wrote in this month’s NTS Report about propagaion and NVIS, etc.

Anyway, I probably should let my poor IC-761 rest.

Mike, Your signal was averaging -9 dB s/n, and I was getting about 80% of that.

I almost stepped on you, as I had already pressed my T/R button after hearing your carrier. Thanks for repeating Mindy’s report.

CUL, Erik

And Doug and Mindy, I look forward to our further communications via email as well as on next week’s ORCA. Correction, my club is having a holiday party next Tuesday, so it will be two weeks before i can QNI again.

73 to all.

N6IET Tu Rick are you cpying KK6RKY Erik? and I didn’t cpy any of AE7XB cu < K7KY

I probably made a mistake. I was thinking that the relay of Mindy’s message was being sent by

Mike, AE7XB. Then I probably had a brain fart and started thinking it was Erik. I h“e his name and call

right above Mike’s on my log. Sorry for the confusion.

I was copying Erik earlier but only about 50% print.

SHORTWAVE RADIOGRAM

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
