We weathered the Solar Storm quite well tonight. The band didn’t support our Eastern stations, but Western stations did better than we anticipated. All net events flowed smoothly tonight and we wrapped this Advanced Session in one hour. Thanks for making a complex net easy to manage.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Bruce AC7IR in North Bend,OR. After years of being the only Oregon stations, we’re pleased have a more Oregon Ops join the net.

Next Tuesday, 05/April/22, we’ll return to Basic NBEMS Exercises. The first three Tuesdays are Basic Exercises and the remaining Tuesdays are Advanced NBEMS Exercises.

Last week we finally realized what we’d overlooked in preparing Ops to work the Advanced NBEMS Exercise. Key to that Exercise in paying close attention to your place in the net WHILE completing the Advanced Exercise. After sending each Mode, NCS calls every station for Reports until they Report, ‘CONFIRMED’. If you aren’t tracking NCS, you’ll miss your Report call and stall the Exercise. The Advanced Exercise has a little time pressure we don’t want to diminish. When you can work the Advanced Exercise comfortably, you’ll be well qualified for emergency nets. Emergency nets have periods of intense activity and periods of minimal activity.

We’ll also be mindful about Relays in the Exercises. We’ll restrict Relays to the Basic Exercise. We won’t ask Advanced Exercise Ops to Relay; they’ve enough on their plate already. Our Traffic Round is part of the Advanced Exercise and follows the Exercise directly. There’s not much time to finish the Exercise before NCS calls for Traffic. Stations at the top of the Roster are under more time pressure. Gene W1EEP is often the first station on the Roster. Gene checks in early because he likes to practice under pressure. The later you ck-in, the more time you have before NCS calls.

Please Ck-In with our Macros or similar Macros of your own. Sending only what we need, ORCA macros also Lock the cursor at 1500wf, enables RxID, and disables TxID. You can configure your Ck-In Macro for more net settings too. Make a macro for each net you work; Ck-In Protocols differ widely.

No macro Experimenting next session. We’ll work w/Macros again on the 2nd Tuesday, 12/Apr/22.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

We begin tonight with an apology and Thank You to Rob KA7ERV. Rob missed a critical step in the Advanced NBEMS Exercise last week. No wonder Rob and so many others have missed this step. We’ve not mentioned it once. Truthfully, we didn’t realize our error until Rob missed it last Tuesday. We failed to mention the crucial task of maintaining focus on net operations WHILE working the Advanced Exercise. Monitoring stations don’t have to
be ready for the Traffic round or pay appention to net operations.

The after-net Monitor’s Session works very well for learning the NBEMS Exercises w/o the pressure of on-air participation. You can learn and repeat the Exercise until they’re second-nature, but when you move to participating on-air, there’s time pressure and the need to remain focused on your place in net operations. You have to add another level of awareness to processing the Exercise. You can’t copy the file 100% and begin working the
Advanced Exercise w/o following NCS. Otherwise, you’ll miss your Report calls and stall the Exercise. Once you Report CONFIRMED, NCS stops calling. No problem working the Advanced Exercise immediately when you’re able to maintain focus on your place in the net and reply when called.

Tonight we’ll work another Advanced NBEMS Exercise. Advance Exercises can accommodate eight stations. If you don’t make the cut, work the Exercise silently and FILL or CONFIRM in the after-net Monitor’s Session. Next week’s session is the 1st Tuesday of April and a Basic NBEMS Exercise. Basic Exercises can accommodate 12 stations. No Macro experiments next week. We’ll publish the beginning/ending test images as usual. The Comment Round will be comments only, no test images.

Why are we still harping about Ck-In Protocol?  We run ck-in w/Squelch open to accommodate weak signals and VidIDs. Here’s an example of our log before Editing out the noise for publication. TEXT in CAPS stands out clearly. The two lower case CALLSIGNS take a lot more time to locate.

Ck-In is our busiest time; please use the Ck-In Macros available here: http://orcadigitalnet.com/macros/

Check-out a Draft of ‘How to Conduct the Basic NBEMS Exercise’ here: http://orcadigitalnet.com/ncs-tools/basic-nbems-exercise/ The NBEMS Exercise Macro file will be available for download.

If you’re comfortable working the Advanced NBEMS Exercise and your signal generally covers the net, you can run the Basic NBEMS Exercise as NCS. All you need is a little off-net instruction and practice. Already we have two Ops interested in running a Basic Exercise. Both are comfortable with the Advanced Exercise and have solid signals. Have a little fun among colleagues and broaden your digital networking skills.

Tonight exercise had a pucker factor to it. Busy last week was at cabin had to fix multiple sections of barbwire fence, darn bulls free range. Then usual spring weeds need attention and then tore down the doublet and relocated to the back. Got it back up 34 feet but ran out of time and energy to get the rest of the wire up. Next trip hopefully will get it up and tuned. Can’t wait to see if this will resolve a few issues I was having out there.

No sun here today, no rain either.  Ain’t fair I tell ya Listened to lots of DX on the upper bands.  10m was amazing, and even worked a station in Alabama on 15m with 100w.  However conditions on 75m started rough, but have improved with evening hours.

Unusually noisy here today.  Hopefully noise tapers off soon.

Doug, your audio went south for a bit when transmitting the raw copy of check-ins.  Don’t know what happened!

PSKR modes again don’t do well with multipath and fading conditions.

Great to see folks on the WF tonight!

Stay well, stay safe.

QRZ forum comment states Today we learned that the FCC has decided to start collecting a $35 fee for a 10-year amateur radio license. The fees will begin on April 19th of this year. These fees are to be paid online, by the amateurs themselves using the FCC’s CORES system. For many hams, this means dealing with both Volunteer Examiners as well as the FCC, in separate transactions.

https://forums.qrz.com/index.php?threads/fcc-announces-license-fees. Start saving for that license renewal. 73’s WA7HHE
