Tonight we have 26 stations on the Roster w/eight Active stations working the NBEMS Exercise. Rosters are increasing as we head toward Fall and 80m condx slowly improve. The net flowed smoothly tonight despite FLDIGI freezing mid NBEMS Exercise. Our NCS back-up routine again kept us on track with only a brief pause while we reconfigured antennas. Before each net, we both prepare to run the Exercise; we seldom have need, but lately we’ve had to switch quickly twice. Resolving problems mid-net increases our on-air problem-solving skills. Digital operations are smooth and easy when all is orderly, but a byte or two astray can stop operations. Resolving on-air issues quickly can be crucial when the situation is dire and time is critical. In emergencies, we don’t rise to the occasion, but perform at our level of training.

We started the NBEMS Exercise in OFDM-500 and surprisingly, KS6M, WA7HHD, & KJ7VGV all CONFIRMED. These stations are widely dispersed across the net. Usually, fast but fragile Modes are CONFIRMED by stations on similar path to NCS. After the 1st pass, Mindy took over the Exercise while Doug sorted out Win soundcard issue.

ORCA welcomes back Mauro AG7BI in Kingston,WA, Brian KJ7BHK in Vancouver,WA, Ian KE7NKR in Forest Grove,OR, and Bruce KB7VX in Chehalis,WA.

We’re impressed with Elwood WB0OEW’s HamClock. It’s colorful graphic presentation contains all the data we usually gather b4 every net. Although it doesn’t run on Windows, you can have it on Windows with RealVNC. RealVNC puts a server on your Linux PC or RPi that feeds the client RealVNC on Windows. There are two other methods to see HamClock on Windows. HamClock: http://www.clearskyinstitute.com/ham/HamClock/

In September we’ll again work with fire-map images as we’ve done before. Hand-drawn fire maps can convey information in a single image that would take hundreds of words to explain in text.

We again have WX predicted for SW/OR that may bring lightning, so we’ve left travel trailer and Tahoe connected. During the Chetco Bar fire a few years ago, we needed flashlights to connect truck & trailer at 1500 in the afternoon. The air was thick with ash. Scary. Current predictions aren’t as concerning as last week, but connecting the load-leveling hitch is more involved than an ordinary hitch. Fires to our North & South are still growing, but control is increasing. Today, we’re more focused on the potential for more lightning.

^r ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight the NBEMS Exercise involves Macro development. Pay close attention to Tag requirements. Some are self-sufficient; others require a physical address or variable content. It’s handy & efficient to have a single macro set(file) for ORCA and sets for other nets or activities. A simple mouse click changes sets instantly. If this interests you, let us know. We’ll explain linking multiple Macro sets so each set will call the other/others.

Are you familiar with the free Amateur app, HamClock, developed by Elwood WB0OEW? If not, it’s definitely worth exploring. It runs on Linux & Raspberry Pi, but not Windows. With HamClock running on an RPi, you can have HamClock on your Windows browser thru the RPi URL & port 8081, RealVNC, etc. There’s numerous options and configurations. The colorful graphic presentation is impressive and it’s access to current information wide and configurable. Check it out: http://www.clearskyinstitute.com/ham/HamClock/

TxID is a key FLDIGI tool. Recently, we discussed tactics for switching modes manually when TxID is forgotten or compromised by HF noise. With a little practice we learn to recognize oft-used Modes by sight & sound. Even when we recognize the new mode, finding it on Menu/Mode table takes a few seconds, a bit too long for a single header transmission. Sending the FLAMP header twice is one tactic for changing Mode manually in time to decode the whole file. Anther tactic is having Macro buttons for oft-used Modes. We have Macro buttons for all oft-used ORCA Modes. A quick mouse click or touchscreen tap changes Mode instantly. With header x2, available Mode buttons, and a little practice, you can change Mode manually fast enough to decode the whole file.

Ha! Apparently Jaye and I BOTH have good ears on Bakersfield tonight. What did they call those high-noon shootouts in westerns?
Draws or something? I copied everyone tonight except April at chk-n, I believe.

I read with interest today how ARES communicators in Florida are planning on using a statewide UHF linked repeater system as their
primary emergency communications system for the Hurricaine Idalia event. Hope to hear how that works out. Certainly wish them the
best. I have a niece who, with her husband, has a newborn and a house in Tampa.

Thanks for the net. 73 all.

NICE WORK on the macro-on-the-fly ex to everyone! Remember, when you
close FLDIGI, DON’T SAVE the macros! :) I did mine at QRP!

Wow, the smoke rolled into Eureka this afternoon. It was clear and
warm, had doors open and cozy kitten on lap, next thing I know my eyes
started burning and a peek out of the window reveled gray everywhere!
Luckily, about 30 minutes later, wind turned again and blew out the
smoke and left clear skies again. WX report tonight noted that we
will likely see more of this happening over next two days.

The Smith River Complex fire is just huge, now in CA & OR. I hope
the crews can cut a break and rein it in soon. Speaking of fires,
we have tons of CAL FIRE crews taking a 24 hour break here in Eureka!
Love seeing those kids and so glad they are on the job and grateful
we are blessed to host them.

Had a biopsy today. Gosh what fun. The doc & tech were concerned
about pain, but compared to my normal daily pain, it was more like
a mosquito bite. :|

Cooking up some ribs I bought 1-2 year ago. Don’t know if they are
beef or pork. Decided to slow cook them in oven, then I’ll add some
of the Smokin’ Moses “Mo On Fire” hot BBQ sauce. :)

Fritz my #1 puss continues to recuperate well. He makes quite the
statement as he parades around the hood with his “Zoot Suit” on! I
finally let both of them out Sunday morning. They were both very
sick-n-tired of being cooped up in house w/me! Happy cats = happy old
hippie :)

7:30PT(2:30UTC) looks like we WILL have a lovely sunset after all.

It was the biggest exhibit I’ve ever seen in the U.S.. Here is the website:

Here is a great video of some of the military history from this museum:

It will give you a good idea of some of the 500 military vehilces that are there.

Greetings to all my friends and ORCA ops,

I am home in WA for one week more in a 3 week vacation. I have a new Truladderline doublet antenna set up here, 650ohm feedline,
apex at 60 feet. Also just programmed an FT891 for FLDIGI AND JS8Call. I am using it now. Will be driving back to Missouri after
Labor Day.

Thanks for ORCA. Glad to make it at least this once. I am still a year out before I can get up a decent antenna in MO. Lots of trees need
to be cut down to make way for solar system. Learned how to develop a spring on YouTube, and completed the project. Now it flows
directly into a 550 gallon black holding tank and overflows to a pipe into a pond, which I stocked with Gambusia affinis (mosquito fish).
Need solar power to complete system and get water and electricity to my RV lots. XYL working me like a drill sergeant. will be good to
get back to MO so I can rest.

ORCA < K7KY Rats! More station issues agn tonite. Mindy saved my bacon again. Our years of practice are paying off nicely. I’ve
bypassed all coax switches from main switch to station becuz there’s a bad switch or jumper. After switching antenna w/Mindy, Win8.1
changed soundcard allocation and no signal. My station ran for years w/few station problems. I hope I’m sorting them out for the next
few years.

Some Macro Tags like K7KY & retrieve stored variable information like your CALLSIGN stored in FLDIGI. The other stations CALLSIGN
is stored temporarily in the logging CALL window at top of FLDIGI screen. retrieves and prints whatever is stored in that variable.
Sometimes, nothing )-;

Jaye KE6SLS’s suggestion not to SAVE the Macro is sound. I didn’t include that suggestion as there was enough to think about already.
Macros are easy to delete. If you switch to another Macro set before using the new Macro w/o SAVING, it won’t be there when you next
open that set. I often edit Macros, use them w/o Saving and they’re back to original form next time I open the set.

Nice to see Bruce KB7VX back on the Roster.

Oops! I included Macro Tags in a file sent by Macro It never work as you would think anyway I hope u understand the point abt
Macros needing to get info from variables BTN < K7KY

COMMENT

Yep, I accidentally hit the macro button during the report round! I recieved the exercise message in OFDM500F the first round. I was
able to hear most of the stations except for some stations south of KE7SLS as usual. I have the exercise macro ready to send. The
smoke has cleared for a few hours today, we expect the smoke to come back as the winds change again. A new fire as started in
Wheeler Couty at Cottonwood today, the fire is buring on both sides of the river, unkown how big the fire is at this time. This fire will
be a mostly grass fire in a rural part of North Central Oregon. Maybe I will see Bruce’s reports from AmRRON in the future!
