From our perspective, this was an amazing net. Much better band condx than usual, 29 stations on the Roster, 8 stations for the NBEMS Exercise, and a session than ran like a Swiss clock. Very nice work all around. We actually had 12 stations wanting to work the NBEMS Exercise and had to ask four to sit this one out. You guys are amazing, really.

We logged Steve WY7SJM in Casper, WY, Rick K0KEX in Smithville, MO, and Keith WA0TJT in Kansas City, MO, three members that have difficulty working the net in Summer. It’s another sign that Fall and longer nights are opening 80m to our more distant colleagues. It will be good to see them on the Roster this Winter.

It’s good to see Mike K7MSS in St. George, UT back again. We have a lot of Utah members; there was a time when Cedar City, Utah Ops were a third to half the Roster. Most of them have been with us for years; they always make a solid contribution to the net. Dennis W6DLW writes the monthly newsletter for the Rainbow Canyon ARC in Cedar City. It’s an excellent publication, highlighting training, exercises, club social events, and interaction with Civic agencies. We’d like to learn about activities in other clubs associated with ORCA DIGITAL NET. It’s inspiring.

After a few months off, our NBEMS Exercise ran like we’d been doing it every week all Summer. Amazing! Everyone was certainly on their best game tonight. We were a bit pressed at our end. The Advanced Exercise is no Picnic. It takes a good bit of computer and NBEMS knowledge, attention to detail, and practice. Everyone did a great job. If we’re never called to handle emergency traffic, we’ll be excellent Operators in all aspects of Amateur digital operations. It’s a pleasure to train and practice with you.

Thank You to the Ops that frequently send detailed signal reports in the Comment Round. Everyone likes to learn more about their signal. Working with the same stations on a weekly basis builds a greater understanding of signal characteristics and helps us further refine our stations. We’ve learned so much about our 35w signals by working with you guys every week. Signal reports are an important contribution to HF operations.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Summer Sked is over. Welcome back to full-service ORCA DIGITAL NET. We’ll run the NBEMS Exercise/Traffic Round between Announcements and Comments as usual. If you’re new to the NBEMS Exercise, please work it a few times while monitoring (QNX) to learn it’s format and flow. It moves briskly, simulating time pressure you may experience during emergencies. Complete (CONFIRM) the primary exercise before working the Advanced Exercise within. Stations working the Exercise as Monitors can FILL or CONFIRM Exercise files in the Monitor’s Session directly after net.

Returning to our normal training and practice format coincides nicely with the longer nights of Fall and improving band condx. We’re logging members in New Mexico, Wyoming, and Missouri again. Last week, Doug K7KY had a solid QSO with Aaron N3RYB in Harpers Ferry,VA; MFSK-22 @ 40w. Winter usually brings an uptick in participation. Returning to the NBEMS Exercise will be easy for ORCA veterans and not difficult for newer Ops. Tonight, we’ll use the Originator and Responder Tabs in the FLMSG form, ICS-213.

We send the NBEMS Exercise file three times, each in a different mode. Occasionally, good band condx and robust modes COMFIRM all Active station in one or two passes. We always transmit all three modes to support the QNX stations working silently. QNX stations are usually able to COMFIRM Exercise files, even though they’re not REPORTING. Filling Active stations usually Fills the QNX stations too. Stations failing to CONFIRM the Exercise in three passes can still complete the file in the after-net Monitor’s Session. The Monitor’s Session enables QNX stations to CONFIRM or FILL Exercise files and ask questions. The after-net session keeps the net to a reasonable length for Active ck-ins.

If you’re familiar with FLAMP, and you should be, the primary NBEMS Exercise is simple. Copy the file 100% and Report it CONFIRMED when NCS calls you in rotation. NCS calls for your Report after each transmission until you’ve CONFIRMED. CONFIRM the primary file BEFORE working the Advanced Exercise. If you complete the Advanced Exercise, you have Traffic for the Traffic Round. If you haven’t worked/completed it, send QRU when called for Traffic. If you complete it later, send it for CONFIRMATION in the Monitor’s Session after-net. Read Exercise instructions carefully; it’s a self-check exercise. At the end of Advanced instructions is the number of discreet tasks.

Tnx to Ops who email test image… band is looking good tonite

I think I may finally have my system working again! Did have one glitch with FLAMP. Clicked the report button and the xmit buttons it didn’t send the first time (had to do it again…). I upgraded my computer and have had nothing but problems with getting FLDIGI working… Maybe issues with the new versions?

We are getting ready to go on a field trip this weekend. We are going to be at the Coral Pink Sanddunes looking for little critters (native beetles)!

Hope be able to check in more from now on!

73s everyone!

DE KC7MAW
I’ve finally figured out why my FLDIGI TxID has a mind of it’s own. I’ve disabled it everywhere in FLDIGI, but it doesn’t matter. The minute I boot up FLMSG it turns it on. Then I turn it off in FLDIGI but even if I then shut down FLMSG, it turns it on the nano second I close FLMSG. I then turn it off. And of course turns it back on the nano second I boot up FLMSG. I’ve done the routine about 20 times. Can’t seem to find a setting anywhere in FLMSG to stop this behavior. I also suspect that FLMSG will poll FLDiGi and turn it on when I’m not closing or opening FLMSG.

As I was going to check in, I watched as stations piled in. Good work you guys! So far, the band sounds GREAT (Tony The Tiger[tm]) :)

I am still hoping to bring back my log for FLDigi. Found some good info from W1HKJ. Haven’t had time to try it but made a

few back-ups and hope to give it a whirl later this week.

This has been a hard week. My buddy Mark is being released from hospital to hospice house. I’ll be there for him once he’s transferred. My other buddy will be released from hospital to care home, with assist from hospice, so I will be there too. I wish . . . :|

We received .40″ of rain on the last rain storm. Very much needed!

Had a good NBEMS net last night. Used RTF format and compression with FLAmp. I was impressed how good these two methods work together for NBEMS work. Compress cut 2/3’s of the byte count!

From our local NBEMS net, I plan to stray again into Digital HF/VHF/UHF phone using FreeDV. The program has matured quite a bit since my last venture. I hope some folks will give it a try as well. it IS free software and uses free CODEC made for ham radio.

Another bug in FLMsg is that it no longer AUTOSAVES. Is happening on this computer and the new Rpi 4. Have not found a fix yet.

Very good signals tonight. Wonderful to see all you polished digital hams at work FOR THE FUN OF IT. :)

Thanks Mindy & Doug. Always an enjoyable evening!

ORCA NCS< W7ZAP, Mindy, Great job as Net Control tonight. As a few have said it was fun to be back on the WF again. I was some what anxious when we started but it all smoothed out. Conditions tonight were exellent. I was able to finally get the After Action Report (AAR) completed for the Cedar City, Half Marathon a week or so ago. Weather has been great as Fall sets in and the color changes are taking place. I hope all is well with you two. Not much more to share. Stay safe. 73 to all.

Thank you Dennis! I read the AAR… tnx for emailing those to us.. I always enjoy reading what u guys did well and where changes need to be made. Nice to learn from others!

It’s an amazing evening of practice after the Summer vacation. Nice work at ck-in too. We didn’t fall behind once tonite. The NBEMS Exercise was impressive, it went so well. I was really on the rivet tonite. The Exercise has me cpy/pasting in 3 apps and tracking everyone’s missing blocks w/pencil & paper. Some callsign I have a macro for and other I copy/paste into the logger window. It’s a challenge to keep the Exercise moving briskly. Thanks for an outstanding return to NBEMS traffic-handling practice. If we could accommodate them, we would have had twelve stations in the Exercise tonite. TU to the stations that accepted an * and sat-out the Exercise. We need to limit the net to 1.5hr or less. Some of our members are in earlier time zones and some have to get up early for work.

TU to the Ops that save a bit of time by evaluating the band, activating TxID, and sending their files in MFSK-64. We try to keep net sessions to a reasonable length; every little bit helps.

And, Hats-Off to all of you. Without your participation and support, we wouldn’t be a successful digital Training net. None of us know how many Ops Lurk each week, but we often hear from stations that we’ve never logged. We’re presenting a working model of Amateur digital networking. It may help other nets to refine their Protocols and it does help Ops learn Amateur digital networking.

Thanks to so many of you for kind thoughts and good wishes. I’m feeling much better. < Doug K7KY

ORCA < WA7HHE, came across Verizon’s Front line new Interoperability for responders from all agencies. Appears pretty hard to beat. Group First Response helps more responders share critical information. The solution:
Complements the mission-critical capabilities of LMR networks nationwide, expanding those networks to a greater number of users Enables first responders on different radio networks to share information seamlessly Provides broadband capabilities unavailable to narrowband LMR users, like multimedia data exchange and live video streaming Interoperates with Verizon Push to Talk Plus, including the Group Advanced and Group Command tiers What’s more, because Group First Response was designed with Verizon’s partner Motorola Solutions, it integrates with any manufacturer’s P25 LMR system and many other radio networks. This integration enables seamless communication between cellular and radio and provides an easy way to expand interoperability, Full story @

Well I’m at the cabin and it was a wonderfull sunset with clear skys. I added a ferrite choke? to my coax and it cleared up a lot of static.
