It was our night for QRM. We’re used to QRN and a bit of QRM, but tonight was unusual. Unfortunately, some seemed intentional. MFSK-32 tolerates a lot of QRN/QRM, but not all of it. Speaking of QRM, you may have noticed people tuning up on net-freq during Early Ck-In. You don’t need years of Amateur experience to know tuning on the active frequency is a poor operating tactic. It’s not hard to spin the VFO a few khz b4 tuning.

This brings a useful Macro to mind. I label this Macro, ‘GOHOME’ after it’s main Macro Tag, <GOHOME>. Here’s the Macro text:   <GOHOME><LOCK:off><@LOCK:on>

Sometimes during nets while switching modes, LOCK turns off for unknown reasons. It’s also common for my cursor to follow signals that are a bit off 1500.  I use this Macro to return it to 1500wf and reset LOCK quickly.  It saves a few seconds of distraction while busy with net events. <GOHOME> depends on your Sweet Spot setting.

Here’s an interesting Macro option that needs exploration. I posted a question about this feature to the NBEMS Forum a couple days ago; no replies yet. In Configure/UI/Macro buttons,  enable ‘Show macro control codes’. This prints Macro Tags in the RX buffer.  I’ve learned that Delayed Action Tags print, but not the more common Tags like <TX><RX>. If you experiment with this feature, we’d all like to learn the parameters. It’s cool to see the Tags that execute silently behind the curtain. Not all Tags print and I’ve not had time to discover which categories do & don’t.

Tonight’s ORCAtest images were generally better at net-end than beginning. Probably due to DST shift. Thanks for emailing them. It may help incoming Ops to know there’s multiple values in emailing these images. 1st, it contributes useful context to the Net Report. 2nd, it engages you in locating files in your PC file-system. Traffic handling often requires us to hold traffic and resend it when a receiver is available. There are numerous EMCOMM reasons to be very comfortable working with PC apps and file-system. Emailing ORCA images, imprints the process in muscle memory.

Going forward, please email the beginning/end ORCAtest image to NCS: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com as usual.  For sessions when someone sends ORCAtest for the Comment Round, please send only that image.  We’ll ask Ops in different locations, enabling us to learn a bit about how net members copy each other.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The NBEMS traffic-handling Exercise for this evening features the FLMSG ICS-213 form.

Thanks for sending the beginning/end ORCAtest images and the image Rick K7UK sent before Comments. We ran out of time and
didn’t publish the beginning/end images.  In the future, we won’t ask you to email beginning/end ORCAtest images when someone
sends ORCAtest.jpg for the Comment Round. We’re trying to reduce time spent on the Net Report and ORCA in general.  In January,
we ceased editing HF noise from Net Log; it required about an hour. It seems no one noticed; we may be the only ones using Net Log.
Same for publishing ORCAtest images; it takes a lot of time.  From now on, we’ll publish the beginning/end images or a Comment
Round image, but not both. We’re rebalancing family, homestead, and Amateur radio  responsibilities.

Reading Comprehension: Visualizing is a powerful assist to understanding written instructions. People who visualize as they read
usually score high in comprehension.  Careful reading is key to understanding and implementing written instructions.  ORCA provides
numerous opportunities to practice and polish reading skills. From Early Ck-In to the Comment Round, our protocols are presented
textually every session.  They’re also published  on the website.

NBEMS Exercises are designed to encourage careful parsing. Exercise instructions vary slightly from session to session. NBEMS
Exercises are self-corrected. At the end of each Exercise is the number of discreet steps in the Exercise. You can also compare your
results with others in the Traffic Round.  When we misconstrue instructions, we’re unlikely  to implement them correctly. Including
more information than instructed isn’t a good training strategy; it burns time & resources.

The Monitor’s Session enables incoming Ops to learn the NBEMS Exercise w/no on-air time pressure.  Hats-Off to the 5 Ops that
worked the after-net Monitor’s Session last Tuesday. That session ran twice as long as the main net. This after-net session is for newer
Ops that work the NBEMS Exercise silently as Monitors. Veteran ORCA Ops are also welcome. We both Fill or CONFIRM the instruction
file, or CONFIRM the Exercise file. We also answer questions and clarify procedural issues. If you have questions or need other
assistance, we may ask you to wait while we Fill & CONFIRM files for those waiting. We’ll circle back to you ASAP.

The COMMENT ROUND is next.
Tom WB7EUX is up first < NCSTd tn

NCS < WB7EUX – Thanks to Mindy and Doug!

I sucessfully mounted a parabolic reflector in its permanent home this morning while standing in snow up to my ankles. The rf chain includes the actual antenna in the nose cone of the dish, an LNA powered by a BIAS-T from an SDR receiver which is connected to a Raspberry Pi 4. Using a piece of software to decode the data stream from the SDR I sucessfully tuned the NOAA weather bird GOES-18. With another piece of software I decoded the data stream into very high quality images of the earth in several different contexts.

This has been a FUN project started back in February with a lot of pieces still in the making.

All is well. 73 de WB7EUX

I saw someone mention JS8 on one of the digi nets last week and it got me curious, so I checked it out and have really been enjoying that mode.  Made a dozen or so nice ragchew qso’s, as well as found out about the @JS8CHESS group and now have a radio-chess game going on with someone.  Mostly active on 40m.  Also finally remembered to try mfsk64 for exercise file 😄.  Good thing since it seems I took paragraph literally and copied the one after the sentence which I guess most people did as the paragraph.  As always love the net, 73s until the next one! de N6FPV k

It was windy all day at the cabin and now it is raining but at least the winds have died down. Antenna was moving around but is still in good shape. Had another shipping contained delivered last Friday. The first one is full. Lots of cleaning it up today. Do you know hard it is to drive an 8 foot ground rod all the way into the groundwith only 4″ sticking out? Good thing it’s been raining alot. Hope all are well. Crazytimes we live in and sad.

Wow got both Missouri check-ins out here and Wyoming.

Very good to see neighbor Friday on tonight. Good work OM!

Yesterday’s wind storm really rocked the qth.  Didn’t fall to sleep until the weee hours of the morning.  Today, grumpy & tired, but well fed!

10 day outlook shows rain and more rain, and snow at elevation 🙁

Quite a bit of QRM on the frequency tonight.  Almost looks like it is intentional.  After 20 minutes into the net, it is intentional.

We need to keep an eye on SWR on nights like tonight.  As rain begins to fall, we need to touch up the antenna match, when it stops raining, again, need to touch up the match.

Spring, spring, OH WHERE ART THOU SPRING?

Hmmmm, Radio just did a power reset, you probably missed some of this.

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

ORCA NCS< Doug/Mindy as always thank you for facilitating such a true learning experience each week. Spring is trying its best to get a foot through the door here in Southwestern Utah.  However, weather forecasters are still advising that there could be more light snow showers over the the next week or so. Received my new Icom 2730A dualband radio today.  It’s going to replace my Yaesu FT-8800 radio that I’ve had for 14 years.  I’ll keep it though as a back up or for portable use.  Not much else to report. Nice to see everyone on the waterfall.  Stay safe. 73

ORCA welcomes Friday W6FRI in Arcata,CA. Challenging band… some very lite stns during ck-in, not moving my S-meter, but 100% cpy. Just an FYI and radio etiquette… if you’re tuning your radio for the net, pls move off-freq to 1000WF or 2000WF and tune-up. Pre-toning to ck-in is expected @ 1500WF.

Also, pls don’t change modes during ck-in (may have been QRM, there was plenty). If you can’t ck-in w/NCS or via relay using MFSK-32, wait until later in the net.

Thanks for emailing your test images… will post in Net Report 😄
Great to see all on the WF tonight!
