Our expectations for band condx tonight were off the mark. Every NBEMS Exercise Op CONFIRMED on the first transmission in MFSK-64. Multiple Solar CMEs threatened to disrupt radio communications. But no; 80m was much as usual tonight. Band condx were also good for Saint Brandon DXpedition 3B7M 2023. Early on we were peppered with FT8 signals. Annoying, but well tolerated by MFSK-32. After closing the Monitor’s Session, we contacted Petr OK1FCJ, 3B7M Expedition Leader, telling him about the 4 digital nets on 3.581+1500 M-Thurs and included their time skeds. Petr responded very nicely @ 0300. He immediately changed the 80m frequency on their website to 3.567. It’s always a pleasure to work with responsible Amateurs. We wished them well w/3B7M DXpedition.

It’s good to follow-up events like this when we can. Most QRM is unintentional. We’ve had excellent cooperation when addressing interference to the net, VARA being an exception. We don’t have VARA software and can’t contact them while conducting nets anyway. Guessing the location of digital QRM signals isn’t easy. Many digital modes are designed to cope with HF condx at low power, but 100w+Amp signals are common today. We’ve worked ORCA w/35w since inception, covering western USA reasonably well.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Brent KJ6WLO in Veneta,OR and Matt N6FPV in Scotia,CA. We hope they find ORCA worth working regularly. We’ll ask them to review our website Quick-Start Guide: http://orcadigitalnet.com/quick-start/. Matt lives in Humboldt County,CA, a very active area for Amateur Radio, similar to Cedar City,UT.

Our Macro experiment during Comments went well. See ORCAtest images we received below. Some will find our Macro experiments pedestrian; others will find them challenging. We’re similar to a 19th Century one-room schoolhouse w/newbies and veterans in one group. We’re trying to devise Macro experiments that reinforce previous learning for veterans and are challenging but workable for incoming Ops. Lamar AE6LJ uses the #hashtag to disable Tags instead of removing them. A good tactic for specific purpose. We use #hashtags in numerous Macros. We don’t use #hashtags in the Path Evaluation Macro. Instead, we save the variations under different Labels.

When a Macro has 2-3 specific applications, it’s useful to save the variations under different Labels so NO Editing is required b4 use.  Here’s an ORCA Macro containing a #hashtag:

<PUSH:m><LOCK:off>
<RXRSID:on><TXRSID:off>
<MODEM:NULL>
<GOFREQ:2000>
<VIDEO:K7KY>
<#VIDEO:QNX>
<TX><RX>
<@POP>
<@GOFREQ:1500>
<@LOCK:on>

Note <#VIDEO:QNX> is disabled by #. Remove #hashtag to enable QNX for ORCA ck-in. If you ck-in both ways, it’s more efficient to save a Macro for Active and another for QNX rather than editing the #hashtag in & out. For Macro comments, questions, & Exercise suggestions, email: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise questions reveal the depth of Amateur Radio experience @ ORCA. In tonight’s net, 10 Ops, 8 Active Ops & 2 NCS, have 222yrs of combined Amateur Radio experience and 57.5yrs of digital networking experience @ ORCA. 57.5yrs of weekly practice is impressive. We’re kick’n w/the Big Dogs!

‘We do not rise to the level of our expectations. We fall to the level of our training.’
Greek poet Archilochus’s (680-645/BC)

Next session, 04/Mar/23, Don KJ7VGV will conduct the NBEMS Exercise.

ANNOUNCEMENTS 21/Jan/23
Tonight’s NBEMS traffic-handling Exercise features FLMSG form ICS-213. NBEMS Exercise questions primarily simulate message content. Occasionally, they’re instructive or interrogatory. While NBEMS traffic-handling routines and tactics are the main focus, we’re also polishing Reading Comprehension and Situational Awareness skills.

We’ll experiment with Complementary Macros in the Comment Round tonight by pairing Path Evaluation and ID/STOP Macros. Using two Macros and FLDIGI copy/paste or drag’n drop feature, we’ll send ORCAtest.png, comments, and closing ID in one seamless transmission.

Sequence: Execute one after another w/o waiting for previous step to end; FLDIGI will queue them.
1) Execute Path Macro
2) Drag’n Drop or Copy/Paste comments in FLDIGI TX window
3) Execute ID/STOP Macro

The Macro experiment is OPTIONAL; you can comment as usual. If you’ve recently joined ORCA, the Path Evaluation Macro is downloadable, top of right column: http://orcadigitalnet.com. Copy Comment Macro: http://orcadigitalnet.com/macros/

I had wet snow and graupel on the ground here in the Oakland hills (el. about 1400 feet) on Friday the 24th. Overnight lows have been in the mid 30s F and daytime highs in the mid 40s. This has definitely been a cold spell.

I have been having RFI problems on the low bands, and some snap-on ferrite beads arrived today. I have deployed them all, and I see some improvement. I will keep experimenting.

Rather than removing tags in my existing, working

macros for one time use, I usually prefer to simply

hash tag them. This also saves me from having to make

and store copies of my valuable macros. One only has

to remember to remove the hash tags afterward.

I like how hash tagging makes editing macros on-the-

fly a real snap. For example, I use this method in my

VID net check-in macro; #VIDEO:QNX, #VIDEO:QRU,

etc… I just remove the hash tag from the desired

status, hit “Apply” and I’m ready to TX. Without

saving the change, my macro is in it’s usual state

the next time I open FLDigi.

Anyway, thanks to ORCA HQ for the exercise and

keeping things interesting.

Today, we had all four seasons in 8 hours. Lots of hail/snow/rain
which is great for our water ways. We should now be on par with a
normal yearly average. Currently at .97″ of rainfall & 37 deg F, with
hard freeze warnings tonight/tomorrow.

Our broadcast TV stations are ALL off the air today/tonight. Also,
the broadcast radio station I listen to is off the air. Very discouraging
to see no back-up capabilities on any of these broadcast stations! I
think many of us are the only ones making backup power plans and
building a more resilient network.

Last night, during our Humboldt D.E.N. I transmitted the weekly bulletin
and just as it finished, FLDigi decided to lock up. Ended up having
to perform a full reboot. Very frustrating when I’m involved in
four nets 3 at the same time. :( But, we mustered through and still
managed to conclude them all.

To complicate our emergency nets, our linked repeater system has failed
so thanks to Lamar, we used this frequency to transmit our southern
operating areas traffic. Thanks again Lamar.

Hope to connect with April w7anc, soon. A local ham was kind enough
to build her a linux ham radio computer. I’ll be helping helping her
learn her way around the “hood” and begin to understand the linux
file system and programs.

Good to see N6FPV, Matt, he checked in yesterday and is delighted to
have an HF antenna back up!

I read the net report which reported we should revisit another net
report from 21JAN2023 <?> so I checked out some of the reports from
January and decided I’ll just have to wing it tonight! :) Now, I just
hope my wings aren’t ICING! heeeheee

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

ORCA welcomes Brent KJ6WLO in Veneta,OR and Matt N6FPV in Scotia,CA. I wasn’t sure what band condx we’d get tonite w/2 CMEs arriving today. Condx are better than I anticipated.

Fun to see how long Ops have been active in this hobby. We have quite a collection of longtime Ops and newer Ops… good to see.

Jaydon… VidID is for both active/QNX ck-in by adding QNX to your macro. Had a lot of ck-ins quickly & accidently ck-ed u in QNX tonite.

Our WX has been much colder than usual. We had snow for a couple of days, which is a mix of fun & bother :-/ Expecting 29F tonite.

Tnx for working with us tonite!

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
