Can the band get any stranger? Probably. Deep and sudden fades, NVIS on and off like a switch, one-way propagation, etc. Yikes! On the plus side, there were no overlapping VARA signals tonight. Early loss of NVIS isn’t unusual this time of year. It may improve as Winter progresses. Again this week, it took both of us on seperate antennas to work Ck-In and the Comment Round.

Next Tuesday, 04/Jan/22, we resume the weekly NBEMS Exercise. January has 5 Tuesdays; we’ll run a Basic NBEMS Exercise the first 3 sessions, and an Advanced NBEMS Exercise on the last two Tuesdays every month.

The Basic NBEMS Exercise entails CONFIRMING 100% reception of a brief file. That’s it; no Advanced Exercise or Traffic Round.

The Advanced NBEMS Exercise is the same as before. A brief file to be CONFIRMED, but this file contains a Advanced Exercise that generates traffic for a Traffic Round. There’s no change to this Exercise.

Early Ck-In will indicate which Exercise, Basic or Advanced, is current. The Basic Exercise requires less net time and will accommodate more Active Ops. The Basic NBEMS Exercise will be easy to work and easy to conduct. We’ll run it awhile to demonstrate just how easy it is. We’ll also develop an on-line how-to page for running the Basic Exercise. We hope a few net Ops will be interested in running the Basic Exercise. We’ll run the Advanced NBEMS Exercises. Cunducting the Basic Exercise is an opportunity to take limited responsibility for net operations and extend your digital networking skills.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR HOLIDAY SKED: No NBEMS Exercise until next year, 04/Jan/22. Ck-In and Comment Round only.

Before the Comment Round, we’ll ask one station to send our test image with the Path Evaluation Macro. Please include that image with the usual test images. We’ll publish the additional images separately. More knowledge of net-station signals will help us choose Relay stations more efficiently.

These stations have the Path Evaluation Macro working:
KJ7VGV Don, Win10
KG7VVN Bruno, Mac
AE7LT Lamar
KE6SLS Jaye, Linux
WB7EUX Tom, Linux
W7WSV Steve
W6ADZ Darrell
W1EEP Gene
KB7VX/P Bruce
WA7HHE Brad
If you should be listed, let us know.

We’re thinking to run the NBEMS Exercise/Advanced Exercise once or twice per month and a simpler NBEMS Exercise w/o Advanced Exercise for the other sessions. The simpler Exercise is much easier to work and may encourage more Ops to participate. Copy the file in FLAMP and Report when called; that’s all. No need for a Traffic Round. We’d be practicing NBEMS traffic-handling at a less demanding level, but keeping our basic skills sharp. There would be Basic and Advanced Exercises each month.

The simpler NBEMS Exercise can easily be run by member stations. It’s a small part of overall NCS tasks. You will gain valuable net-control experience with minimal stress. We’ll run these Exercises from the outset, hoping their simplicity will encourage some to run a few Exercises themselves. We’ll build a ‘How to’ webpage to get you up and running smoothly. You can count on our support.

We may seem a little hasty; we’re trying to balance our commitments and capacity. Our proposal is running one or two NBEMS Exercise/Advanced Exercises on the last Tuesdays every month, and the Basic NBEMS Exercise on all other Tuesdays. We hope the Basic NBEMS Exercises will be lead by net-members. If not, we’ll continue as we have.

We don’t want to diminish ORCA’s usefulness. We’re keenly interested in your thoughts and suggestions.

ORCA < WA7HHE, GE to the net, hope everyone is enjoying the Holidays. Have had several storms come through at this QTH with very high winds, my antenna masts stayed up but had an Aspen tree come down within 6″ of my car. Two others not well rooted so brought them down yesterday just to be on the safe side. RGEecall in my wildland firefighting days falling trees being on of the bigest dangers to firefighters. Did a chainsaw massacre yesterday. New year just about here, lets hope its a better year. 73’s Brad

ORCA NCS< Doug/Mindy,  I trust your Christmas was wonderfull and filed with laughter and new memories?  My wife (Terry) and I were privilaged to be in the company of her 95 (going on 70) year old mother in Lake Havasu, Arizona. She is a remarkable lady to say the least. She still lives by herself in her home of many years, drives, cooks etc.  Here on the home front things are very cold and white with more snow on the way through out the coming week. Happy New Year to you both. Happy New Year to the ORCA Family as well 73 all. W6DLW

I received this transmission today from KO4LAV (station is in NC)
L06,food issues in NC
L07,Today we weere informed at work due to heavy orders due to the holidays that the warehouse was depleted. We were also told that trucks could be late or canceled. Things will be tight for my store until the warehouse can restock.
With lack of workers and truck drivers, it will only delay and aggrevate the situation. Any panic episodes could cause severe issues.

Also received this warning today from a friend. I have NOT confirmed this:

Interstate chekpoints to apprehend the unvaccinated. Interstate lockdowns coming in January 2022. Article is from beforeitsnews.com.

If true, I will not be able to get home, as my contract here goes until February 19th, and there are HEAVY penalties if I do not fulfill the contract.  KB7VX/p

Tnx for the reception report, Bruce.  Ur field antenna is doing well. Ur s9 & 1-3db in SW/OR    Thanks for the additional info.  Check points don’t sound good for anyone.   I hope you’re not stuck in MO when ur contract is finished.  Thanks for keeping us informed about local situations too BK

SHORTWAVE RADIOGRAM

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
