An unusual net tonight. Ck-in was a ClusterCluck for us. The unfortunate combination of a QSO on the frequency and 32 stations wanting on the Roster compressed ck-in just enough to make it difficult. A confluence of events like this is unavoidable, but it doesn’t happen often. We’d become complacent with the efficiency of our usual ck routine. We don’t own 3.581. Next time this happens, we’ll move off and work ck-in until the QSO ends. Inconvenient, but better than compressing Early Ck-In.

Our Ck-In protocol is designed to get the info we need in a brief one-line transmission. If you’re still sending more than a single line to ck-in, please revise your macro. NCS is not the sole determinant of net efficiency; every station effects net efficiency too. Remember, ORCA is not a Traffic net; we aren’t looking for Traffic Codes (QST,QTC,QRU) at ck-in. With the exception of a few useful bulletins, our traffic is generated internally for practice. We’re a learning and training net.

Beside a compressed Early Ck-In, we had a number of doubles and random transmissions tonight. Good to get all these anomalies over in one session maybe. Normally, our nets run very efficiently. Being a Training net, we expect errors and interruptions. Still, we try to minimize them through learning and practice. If you follow net flow carefully, you’re unlikely to double or transmit out of order. That’s easy for us to say; we have to follow net flow closely or there wouldn’t be a flow. It’s different at the other end; I know this by working five digital nets weekly. It’s easy to become distracted when there lots of time between interactions with NCS.

Jaye KE6SLS’s Comments summed up some areas for improvement:

‘….Rough check in tonight, seems like a lot of doubles. Station were doubling with NCS even as NCS began net following image evaluation.  We need to pay a little more attention to NCS as they direct the net, especially since I was hearing doubles during traffic round as NCS was transmitting. Also noticed a few stations transmitting TxID even though they are not changing modes, remember that we *don’t* use TxID as members UNLESS we are actively changing modes for traffic or comments.’

Uneven band condx also contribute to doubles and disorderly contacts. It’s hard to avoid doubling stations we don’t copy. Generally, you’re copying NCS or you wouldn’t be Active. Tracking what NCS is doing gives you a good idea where in the net we are and if you should be transmitting. It’s never a good idea to just send into the void when you don’t know where you are in the net. ORCA is busy and brisk, you’ll almost certainly double someone.

That said, thanks for your patience and enduring diligence. Some of you have been with us for years, some only a few months; together, you’re an impressive team. We recognize and appreciate your contribution to ORCA. Thanks for giving it your best effort. Your participation enables us to present an efficient working model for Amateur HF digital nets. Your time, energy, and support are the foundation of our success.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Bo KN6EIF in San Rafael,CA and Rob KA7ERV in Centerville,ID. Bo is a colleague of Steve K6ETA WDN/NCS. We’ve seen Bo at WDN. Rob is a regular at ID ERC Digital Net with Dave K7DV/NCS.

Thanks for your participation tonight. We enjoyed working with you and we feel like we increased our skills and patience tonight. Remember the WESTERN DIGITAL NET on Thursday w/Steve K6ETA/NCS @ 1930p/0230z, 3.581, MFSK-32. WDN is a Traffic net. Steve is looking for Guest NCS to learn the NCS routines. He will help you develop these skills. Most ORCA Ops are ready for this; you’re already very adept with digital routines and protocols. NCS is just another set of similar routines and protocols. You can do it; give it a shot! Steve will certainly appreciate it; he’ll need NCS support as WDN develops.

ORCA big roster tonite.. u can see I can’t process two or three calls at once pse watch what’s happening and try to space ur ck-in call a little tu BK

ANNOUNCEMENTS 28/Apr/2020

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex167.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic Round with FLAMP.

Tonight, it’s your turn to manage the Comment Round. We’ll turn the net over to the
first Active station on the Roster; that station will hand it to the next Active station.
We’ll resend the Roster before Comments. Stations don’t always hear every other
station on the net and we’ll be prepared to help if a hand-off fails.

We’ve been preparing to participate in an American Red Cross Communications Exercise
on April 30th. ARC uses their own version of ICS forms. These form must be stored in
FLMSG’s ‘Custom’ directory. When selected, they open in a browser for data entry. The
completed forms are stored on your HD for transmission by FLDIGI, or in this case, by
Winlink.

Familiarity with your PC file system is important for handling digital traffic. You may be
storing and forwarding messages, or sending them on by other delivery systems. You may
be composing messages in FLMSG or other text editing apps. To send those messages, you
need to know their location.

The weekly FLAMP Exercise is designed to present and practice file manipulation and
transmission with the FLDIGI NBEMS suite. We developed this Exercise from a similar
exercise designed by Bliss W7RUG, the Idaho ERC Digital Net NCS before Dave K7DV.
We added sequential REPORTING by each station to give practice in monitoring net flow,
knowing your place on the Roster, and preparing to send a REPORT when prompted.
Seldom will you need every aspect of this Exercise to process traffic, but in difficult
times, you will have the knowledge and skills you need.

An OPTIONAL Exercise, included within the FLAMP Exercise, gives practice working
within the PC file system while maintaining focus on net flow and your place in the
Roster. You should not work the OPTIONAL Exercise until you’re comfortable with the
basic Exercise. The OPTIONAL Exercse usually entails creating a new file, answering
a simple question, and sending that file to NCS in the Traffic Round. The question/
reply provides brief practice files for the Traffic Round.

Thanks for emailing the Test images: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com They enhance the Net Report.

I managed to receive the whole exercise file, but the report button in flamp wasn’t working. Weird. Digital HF reminds me of my old BBS days. Fun stuff.

Possible COVID case at a local convenience store, 1st I’ve actually heard of. Still working from home. Took up running and kettle bell before work to stay healthy. Started a small vegetable garden in a sunny part of the yard. Hope to expand it. This is a wake up call for self-sufficency. A man smarter than myself pointed out that one is often using someone else’s infrastructure.

:mg:850 My comments for our ORCA Network:
Ive been listening late at night to amatuers who live in the eastern states, It was a great reminder as to how blessed for us to live out here in the west where it isnt so filled with people living on top of each other. The fellow hams on the radio were professional care givers and first responders. The crux of what they were saying was to be careful and don´t let your guard down. This virus is much more difficult to deal with than recently thought. Many of them described a scene of terrible pain and death all around them. srri to be so blatent with this, they say our best option again is to stay indoors when you can and keep wearing masks even when they relax things.. other than that sad news we are doing well out here.

Natives are getting restless here in WA. My neighbor attended a protest ralley at capitol this weekend. Told me over 3000 protestors. Governor closed down all hunting and fishing for the year c/o COVID. Has a lot of people upset. Many are saying the Governor is overstepping his authority.

Great to see Erik kk6rky! Long time no print om C U on the Sunday AM net (3855 Sunday 8am.)

Rough check in tonight, seems like a lot of doubles. Station were doubling with NCS even as NCS began net following image evaluation. We need to pay a little more attention to NCS as they direct the net, especially since I was hearing doubles during traffic round as NCS was transmitting. Also noticed a few stations transmitting TXID even though they are not changing modes, remember that we *don’t* use TXID as members UNLESS we are actively changing modes for traffic or comments.

Yeah, members control the comment round! I am really starting to enjoy this method

Some good comments and signal reports tonight. GOod work all!

In answer to tonights exercise query, I try to maximize my block size for prevailing net conditions.

American Red Cross Communications Exercise–ah yes, Phil sent me an email for this. I hope to be a small part of this exercise.

Yesterday we finally got some direct sunshine. Was hoping for a repeat today, but the marine layer (fog) just wouldn’t let go

Stay well and stay safe as we try to migrate back to pre-Covid-19.
