Instead of our usual review of band condx, we’ll begin with an After Action Review of tonight’s net. AARs are useful for examining what we did well and what needs attention. AARs aren’t meant to blame or embarrass anyone, but to examine how we performed and what we need to correct. We begin w/Ck-In.

Ck-In is one of the busiest events for NCS. We’re busy compiling a Roster. The Roster is key to smooth and efficient net operations. ORCA Ck-In Protocol is a model for simple, concise digital communications. It conveys all NCS wants to know. It’s not the time to send anything else except emergency traffic. If we want more, we’ll ask. Here again is ORCA Ck-In Protocol:
ACTIVE Ops Send: ‘CALLSIGN’ or VidID
MONITORING Ops Send: ‘CALLSIGN QNX’ (QNI/QNX)
FIRST TIME Op? Send: CALL/NAME/QTH/QNX
NCS repeats Ck-In Protocol numerous times every session. It’s also well covered on the website. Reading, Understanding, and Implementing is fundamental to handling digital traffic. It’s a Training net; we’d be fools to practice incorrectly.

NCS takes Ck-Ins one-by-one. The calling Op learns directly that NCS copied and logged correctly. Calling Ops should wait until NCS acknowledges the previous station. Some net stations don’t hear all the other stations making it difficult to avoid doubling them. Pay attention, listen b4 sending, and do your best.

KN: You see this CW shorthand everywhere in digital operations. KN = ‘Only station called should Transmit’. Even w/o KN, when NCS is talking w/another Op, common sense says wait. Although you may not hear every station, you are copying NCS and can easily tell when NCS is free.

NBEMS Exercises: Again tonight we see the result of working the Exercise too soon. After reading this AAR, reading tonight’s Log will put it in perspective. We added the after-net Monitor’s Session because so many incoming Ops were trying to learn-while-doing. These Exercises may appear easy to the casual monitor, but they involve numerous discreet operations few Ops can learn in a session or two. Even with the Monitor’s Session well established, it’s common for Ops to move to on-air participation before they’re capable of working WHILE following net operations. The result hangs the Exercise for everyone. A bit of time pressure is part of the Exercise, simulating a busy emergency or traffic net. When the Exercise chokes, the time element vaporizes.

Here’s how the Exercise unfolded: Pass#1, all eleven Ops Reported. Pass#2, 1 Op skipped Reporting. Pass#3, 3 Ops skipped Reporting. Veterans didn’t miss Reporting. For Pass#3, no newer Op Reported. When the Exercise concluded, two of them Reported while we were taking Late Ck-Ins. The net runs in discreet segments. It’s orderly, predictable, and efficient when we follow Protocols.

No aspersions on those that struggled with the Exercise. They’re enthusiastic and eager to learn. We appreciate every Op interested in learning digital networking protocols and conventions and NBEMS traffic-handling. We’ve been at this for some time; next month is our 10th Anniversary. We’re familiar with the pitfalls in the learning path. Key to working NBEMS Exercises is taking time to become competent in the Monitor’s Session before jumping to Active participation. When you do, REMEMBER, tracking net operations and being prepared to reply to NCS is THE priority. If you’ve not finished w/the Exercise, send QRU and complete it in the Monitor’s Session.

We sent this just before the Exercise: ‘ORCA If you’re new to the NBEMS Exercise, be sure to track NCS and net flow while working the Exercise. You can get focused on working the Exercise and miss NCS calling you…’

We value every member, newbies and veterans alike. We’re here to help you learn and practice digital networking and NBEMS traffic-handling correctly. Part of our role is error correction. We want to practice correctly, otherwise, we’re wasting time and imbedding poor operating routines. Please don’t feel singled-out for correction, we all learned these routines just as you are today. We assume you’ve read net operations explanations and instructions at the website. Veteran ORCA Ops make the NBEMS Exercises appear easy; they are easy for these Ops. Some have been working ORCA Exercises for years. Do they need all that practice? Probably not, but they can almost do these things in their sleep and will be well positioned if called to process emergency traffic under time and situational pressure. Their regular practice is a weekly working model of efficient digital networking and NBEMS traffic-handling. Incoming Ops learn by observing the vets. It’s a Training Net; we only practice correctly.

TxID: One station ran TxID throughout the net tonight. Another changed Mode for Comments, but didn’t enable TxID. We still managed to copy the file. How is this possible?  We suggest every Op configure FLAMP to send the Preamble(blk#0) twice. This gives every receiver time to change modes quickly. To do this, click the current mode in the bottom left corner of FLDIGI opening a menu of that Mode. Click the mode you want and FLDIGI switches in time to decode the Preamble. Of course, you have to recognize the Mode; that comes with time and practice.

Welcome back to Rex WB8TDG in Dayton,OH. Did you parse that? Rex is in Ohio! We copied him perfectly. Check tonight’s map. He’s well East of Rick K0KEX in Smithville,MO. Rick fully worked the net tonight from Missouri. These guys are two time zones earlier. When the net finally enables our Eastern colleagues to work the net, it hinders stations close to NCS. Short-skip morphs to Long-skip. It’s a mixed blessing. One group benefits while another struggles. Hats-Off to our Eastern colleagues for their patience and persistence.

Thank you for emailing TEST images for the Net Report.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Our NBEMS Exercise tonight features FLAMP’s ICS-213 form. EMCOMM traffic-handlers may see an up-tick Civic Agency support
and H&W traffic in 2023. Let’s be ready. ICS-213 is used by many Civic Agencies.

Paragraph:
‘a subdivision of a written composition that consists of one or more sentences, deals with one point or gives the words of one
speaker, and begins on a new usually indented line.’ http://www.merriam-webster.com

To process formal traffic thru Digital Traffic Net,  Western Digital Net needs 3 Liaison Ops. In the DTN/RRI network liaison’s are
called DRS (Digital Relay Stations). A Traffic Liaison moves traffic between nets, in this case between WDN and a DTN Hub,
Region 7: OR,WA,ID,MT,BC,AB. Region 6: CA,NV. Region 12: AZ,NM,UT,CO,WY. These Hubs use ARDOP & VARA. The DRS
Op checks the regional Hub for traffic before WDN, brings that traffic to WDN, and uploads WDN traffic to the Hub after net.
Currently, it will be mostly learning and practice traffic. Historically, WDN has very little formal traffic. Nearly all has been
make-work for training and practice. Significant H&W traffic may be on our horizon.

If the DTN/DRS role interests you, check these links. We’ve found DTN/RRI Managers friendly and helpful. WDN is welcome. We
may see a lot of Radiogram traffic in 2023. Now is the time to prepare and practice.  If you might consider filling this role for
Western Digital Net, contact Jaye KE6SLS, Don KJ7VGV or ORCA NCS: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

ORCA   If you’re new to the NBEMS Exercise, be sure to track NCS and net flow while working the Exercise. You
can get focused on working the Exercise and miss NCS calling you…  we expected the solar storm to make condx worse than they appear…   Exercise should go well…

Tonight’s exercise begins in PSK250R (220wpm,250hz,80%,FEC). We’ll fill
in THOR50x1 (176wpm,900hz,FEC) & MFSK-32 (120wpm, 630hz, FEC) .

ORCA < de WB7EUX – Happy Holidays to all.
Great exercise. I really like the challenge of analysis, decision, and action – quickly. An uneventful week for ham radio. Great decodes on WEFAX from Pt. Reyes CA, Kodiak Island AK, and New Orleans. The more I use Fldigi the more impressed I am.

I’ve been retrieving weather reports via ftp with a python program I wrote. Also via email from the nws ftp site. In addition I’ve had success with Winlink Express and requesting weather forecasts through the K7UNI node in La Grande OR. Of course this isn’t strictly RF to RF since the nodes connect to the internet for the long haul.
All is well. 73 de WB7EUX

A full day of rain over 1.3″ of rain which is great in the desert. Last Thursday we had 12 ch-ins with three new Ops. I should have acknowledged them but forgot so will put that in announcements this Thursday. Thanks for the net Doug and Mindy and also all the work and help you give to WDN as well.

On tonight’s exercise….. I was typing this last comment when I should have been paying attention. It was only a couple seconds (I think) and had FLAMP ready but stoped when I saw you moved onto Bruno KG7VVN. ……another DUMAS moment! Sorry need to stick to the plan

My buddy John nx6dx came up this last Friday and helped me getting the shack matchbox and amplifier upright on the rolling stand. Also serviced my little generator and helped pickup all the tools and supplies in my garage!

Then my buddy Chris kk6kfb visited on xmas with gifts for my buddy Carl km6liq.  We went out and enjoyed a feast together.  Pretty great way to cap off the year!

Approximately 3″ of rain has arrived since Monday morning.  Crazy as it sounds, we are still about 3″ under last year and 4″ from normal. There’s another system heading in Thursday.  The wind didn’t cause any havoc for me, but locals lost power, trees, and the normal storm related damage.  Still keeping my fingers crossed that we just might eak our way out of drought!

Our frigid temps let up just prior to the Earth Quake that shook us last Tuesday AM.  The warmer over night temps have been VERY welcome for this ham!  As long as we have these systems moving through, the temps tend to hang around in upper 40s to mid 50s!  I am no fan of frost and cold 😄

Winter time condx do cause some mischief!  I am still amazed at how well our digital comms work.  Also impressed at how well k0kex is doing so far east!

This station is wishing all our digital ops a VERY HAPPY and PROSPEROUS
NEW YEAR!

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

ORCA < K7KY
Thunderstorm was predicted for SW/OR tonight and so we chose the NBEMS Exercise Modes. Turned out the band was in fair condx and no lightning.

After every ORCA session we run a brief net for Monitors and Lurkers who work the NBEMS Exercise silently. This is where incoming Ops learn the NBEMS Exercises. Monitor’s Session is an easier place to learn w/o having to pay attention to NCS. The transition to Active participation requires more focus and attention than working silently w/o time pressure.  When you move to Active participation, you need enough spare attention to monitor net flow AND work the Exercise.  It’s not difficult with sufficient practice.  ORCA is self-directed and self-correcting. Work the Monitor’s Session until you’ve got the Exercise down. Then work on-air. The Exercise simulates a busy Emergency Net where the unprepared may hinder passing critical traffic.  Thank you…

Scroll up and review Tom WB7EUX’s comments. He clearly understands the NBEMS Exercises.

All Ops are welcome to change mode for Traffic and Comment Rounds. Be sure to enable TxID or you’ll be the only Op in your chosen Mode.  Turn TxID off when you’re thru. Pick a mode likely to work in current condx.

Thanks to Jaye KE6SLS for the Reception Report and good advice: “Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!”.

Thanks also to Bruno KG7VVN for his Reception Report. Wishing everyone a Happy and Peaceful New Year!  < Doug K7KY
