As expected, band condx were fair this evening, but less-than-ideal for comparing robust Modes like MFSK & THOR. Although 9 stations participated, two were using older software w/o the new THOR modes. One station had current software, but RSID didn’t work. That leaves 6 stations w/comparable data for THOR:

THOR-56 4 CONFIRMED
THOR-32 2 CONFIRMED

MFSK-64 9 CONFIRMED (6 are relevant to Shoot-Out)

All 9 Ops CONFIRMED MFSK-64; not unusual for good band condx. Remember, the Shoot-Out was conducted @ 15w instead of our usual 35w. Reducing power helped reveal Mode capabilities. Next time, we can try true QRP, 5w. Even though only 2/3rds of participants figured in the results, the Shoot-Out did reveal significant difference in Modes performance. Our long-term experience is that MFSK is a little more robust than THOR. We’ll see what future Shoot-Outs reveal.

The NBEMS Macro Exercise was also successful, at least from our perspective. Not everyone agrees, but that’s Amateur Radio. NBEMS Exercises have multiple goals. NBEMS traffic-handling practice is paramount. Practicing correctly and frequently imbeds routines in deep memory. In challenging circumstances, we perform to the level of our training, not our aspirations. ORCA provides focused training weekly; net members decide their own level of application and frequency.

NBEMS Exercise Macro:
‘ORCA/NCS < <MYCALL> hr is Macro/ex328 from <MYQTH>,<MYST> in/<MODE><MODEM:THOR44><NRSID:02><TX><RX>’

Rick K7UK’s ex328 Macro output in Monitor’s Session:
‘ORCA/NCS < K7UK hr is Macro/ex328 from Omak,WA in/THOR44’

Rick’s Macro executed each Tag perfectly. All required variables were in place.
If your Macro didn’t produce similar results, correct the variables these Tags depend on.

Beside traffic-handling, our Exercises also practice parsing and implementing written instructions, essential skills for processing digital traffic. This Exercise entailed copy/pasting a line of provided text into a Macro; w/no instruction to Edit. Another Exercise objective is familiarizing participants with Macro Tag properties and characteristics. <MYCALL> depends on the variable, your CALLSIGN, entered at Configure/Misc/Operator-Station; same for <MYQTH> & <MYST>. When the Macro doesn’t produce expected results, curious Ops will wonder what’s astray and investigate. Many Macro Tags depend on variables. Relevant variables must be defined for the Tag to work correctly. Learning and skill development depends on each Ops level of motivation and application.

Macros are not for everyone. There’s probably not many macro-adverse Ops. Dave W1HKJ populates default FLDIGI with numerous simple Macros. Nearly everyone appreciate tools that save time & energy. Like all tools, they can be misunderstood &/or misused. FLDIGI Macros range from extremely simple Tags like <TX> & <RX>, to esoteric Tags like <POP> that depends on <PUSH> and can only be used once per <PUSH>. The order in which Macro Parser executes Tags sometimes depends on their placement in order, but most often not. The Macro Parser has it’s own priorities. Understanding the Macro Parser takes even more focus and application, but efficient Macros can be developed w/o understanding the Parser; Macro problems can be sorted by trial & error. In the end, most digital Ops will save time & energy with Macros.

NBEMS Exercises also provide practice Saving and retrieving messages in the PC file-system, maintaining focus on net operations while working Exercise tasks, using the various NBEMS traffic-handling tools, and resolving station/software issues quickly. NBEMS Exercises practice many aspects of NBEMS traffic-handling and PC file-manipulation. When you can work these Exercise easily, you’ll be more focused and comfortable working emergency traffic in critical circumstances.

^rANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise gives more practice creating/altering Macros quickly. These Cpy/Paste Exercise help familiarize you with basic Macro Tags. Tag name usually defines Macro function. We Save these Exercise Macros to reinforce our Macro development routine. We Save Macro edits more frequently than we abandon them. Altering existing Macros usually takes less time than building from scratch.

This NBEMS Exercise includes a Mode Shoot-Out between MFSK & the new THOR Modes. We’ll send the same file w/different names in MFSK & THOR and compare the results. You need the new NBEMS apps, fldigi-4.2.00, flamp-2.2.09, and flmsg-4.0.23. We’ll likely have to compare these modes a few times. They’re our most robust Modes, so they’ll likely perform very well. Unless band condx are particularly poor tonight, we may not have a clear indication of which is more robust. We matched WPM & BW as best we can w/more weight on WPM than BW. Comparing MFSK & THOR would be better done in really tough condx. We’ll see how it goes and Fill the Mode that does best. We expect fairly good condx tonight, so we’ll TX the Shoot-Out @ 15w instead of 35w. If no clear winner, use either file, ex328T.txt or ex328M.txt, they’re identical.

Jaye KE6SLS’s suggestion to Not-Save Exercise Macros comes from years of deciding, Save or Not, on-the-fly. We also operate like Jaye, we don’t Save Macros altered for single use. We Ck-Into other nets by Macro that includes QRU. When we edit QRU to QNX, we don’t Save; at next-use the Macro remains QRU. Once you’ve developed a Saving habit, you’ll Save or Not as appropriate. For practice, Save your Macros; they’re easy to repurpose or delete later.

Next session, the 1st Tuesday of October, Don KJ7VGV will conduct the weekly NBEMS Exercise.

During last week’s Monitor’s Session, we were trying to help Brian KJ7BHK locate images sent during net. A couple Ops were also trying to help. Initially, we all misunderstood the issue. See last session log. Brian already knew where FLDIGI images are stored; he was looking in /images/, but Fire Map and ORCAtest images were not there. Later, he remembered his PC is configured for two instances of FLDIGI. The missing images were in the ‘other’ /images/ folder.

Even though our troubleshooting was off target, we learned something from the event. Carroll W7WXV emailed a tip for opening /images/ quickly from FLDIGI’s ‘File’ menu. In FLDIGI, /images/ is opened by, ‘File/Folders/WEFAX images’. All Saved images are in /images/. We’ve not used that menu thinking it was just for WEFAX images. When Carroll sent, ‘File/Folders/WEFAX’ for Brian, it didn’t compute. Now we know All images are in /images/. We’ve added Carroll’s Tip to the website FAQ page. Thank you, Carroll.

NBEMS Exercise is next w/Doug K7KY

80 is really improving, I love to see improving condx :).

I think I might of sabotaged myself on the first THOR tx, I have been using PBT to narrow the bandwidth for MFSK32 so when it goes to a wider bw mode it attenuates it, I need to remember to not make it quite so narrow for those modes in the future. Though it really does help pull in the weak signals!

73 see everyone on the next net!

Tnx for sig rpt Matt. Yes, earlier nightfall is helping 80m. Filters are good depending on size of mode/bw used :-)

I don’t have the new modes here, and won’t have them for many months :(

Have doubts about macro ex since I don’t have that mode. . . Will
attempt an untested alteration and hope it plays :) Ah, I didn’t
type the correct mode in. MSFK64 isn’t a mode!

Wow, no one missed a report for tonight’s FLA ex! Good work!

I REALLY enjoyed seeing so many of our hands checking into the Monday
Humboldt Emergency Digital net! Was a pleasure to transmit the log at
conclusion of the net with all the various states counted. Thank you!

Nearly 2” of rain fell here yesterday. ! What a wonderful treat to
breath crisp clean air and know our turf was able to easily absorb
all that rain! Then today, the opposite, we had amazing blue skies, a
light breeze, and copious quantities of power yielding sunshine!

During the 12 hour monsoon, my WX station stopped measuring the rain
fall! I managed to lower the mast and remove the WX sensor (Davis)
and bring it to garage and out of rain to hopefully fix. It was
pretty clobbered with mildew and cob webs. I wiped it down and removed
the rain sensor and was setting that sensor aside when I heard a
“crash.” Looked back and my unit and fallen to the floor, breaking
the wind speed cups! Arghhhhh. Also realized the rain filter was
completely gone. So, new parts ordered. Cleaning the rain sensor
brought it back online. Don’t know why I love this silly thing so
much, but it brings delight to me daily :)

20m was a wash today trying to copy the ammron traffic. But tonight,
80m is sounding absolutely stiller! Don’t know if there was a person
jamming the 20m net today, or if they were that big of a blockhead.
Hopefully, this was a one-off situation.

Was invited to the Veteran Administration nutrition fair today. I
got to see some good folks and ended up getting a big batch of food to
bring home inside one of those thermo insulated bags! Don’t know who
bought the food, but my pantry is fatter and happier now!

The two tiggers, Fritz & Boots are both crashed out on my bed. They
had a big day making up for lost time from yesterday’s washout. :)

ORCA < WA7HHE, Fun to play with the new OFDM modes and compare with others. Found it interesting that the OFDM 500 mode is supposed to survive multiple 2 second deep-fades causing complete-losses of reception NVIS.

Tonight indicates a mild magnetic Solar storm with a K-Index of a 4. earlier today was up to a 6 per NOAA Space Weather. Values of a 7 or higher indicate a severe geomagnetic storm. However the band has been good for us tonight and appears MFSK is pretty hard to beat < Brad

So mant Actives tonight I will be brief. I’ve been wondering if Mindy would mind being called “Zap Mama”? I assume she would get the references(?). Anyway, inspirational act as always handling the net.

The macro seemed to be missing TXID. I don’t like using macros I haven’t been able to test properly. Personally I think it is reckless Amatuer practice.

What happened with the NBEMS Macro Exercise? Tested here, it worked.

ORCA/NCS < K7KY hr is Macro/ex328 from Brookings,OR in/MFSK32

ORCA/NCS < K7KY hr is Macro/ex328 from Brookings,OR in MFSK32

Brookings,OR should return City,ST u entered in FLDIGI Config. Sometimes when you don’t fill in these fields, FLDIGI does. Then u get USA? AK? etc. I think some didn’t trust the Tags and entered text in the Macro. Only the Op will know. Anyway, we’re learning how Macro Tags work in Macros.

Macros can be tricky and require a bit of focus and application. We couldn’t run the net as it is w/o Macros. With practice, Macro use isn’t reckless, but practical.

ORCA NCS< W6DLW, Mindy/Doug, Thanks for covering thet tonight. Our EComm Group is in the final planning stages to participate with the upcoming FEMA/FCC Emergency Alert System (EAS) Test on October 4, 2023. It will include FLDigi and Winlink in some form. Weather very good here with highs in the upper 70’s to low 80’s with lots of sun. Still waiting to hear about my FT991A being repaired at Yaesu in California . Not much else to pass on at this time.
