Thanks for your patience with band condx and NCS. Tonight felt like my ‘Final Exam’ for Fall semester 2017. 18 check ins and a difficult band. W/o Mindy’s help I would have fallen behind tonight. My keyboard was getting warm and my fingers weary. W/o your patience and focus, it would have been a clustercluck. BTW, 18 check ins is an ORCA record. We’ve had 17 a few times, but 18 is our top. ORCA will be 5yrs old next month. No wonder we are occasionally difficult.

The stations close to NCS are still having copy woes, although it was much better tonight. I copied stations about 100mi distant and had partial copy on those about 40mi away. One nearby station pegged our meters. ORCA welcomes Chuck W6ZX. Chuck lives less than a mile away; like Christine AF7OK, he’s also a MARS station. News to me, MARS stations use FLDIGI for an unencrypted housekeeping net.

My plan to QSY everyone to 40m didn’t work out. Doug KA7FOO and Jaye KE6SLS went to 7.081, but found lots of RTTY and didn’t connect. I’m uncertain about shifting to 40m to solve our band problems. It may help some and hinder others. Here’s Howard KB6NN’s thoughts on the 40m alternate:

<snip>
Scrolling back up the log, I could see where I had copied KE6SLS perfectly, and where K6ETA was coming in clearly but you were not. Earlier, KB6HOH was clear copy. Before that, he was not.

Around 8PM copy was better but not perfect. WA7HHE was good around 08:44pm. I had put my in-out check in on the log just before net time and thanks to Jaye you got that eventually. Your net call up was 100% at 19:34. Then QSB set in. There were numerous doubles, unfortunately. I would be just barely copying someone and someone else would begin transmitting right on top of that.

Did not copy ex52 as originally sent but did copy FLAMP traffic on the return: EX52 W7ZAP NCS W1EEP as text file due to errors. KR7KR_ex52 as a 213 file, the only 100% FLAMP copy. Other FLAMP would have needed fills by report (which I wasn’t there to send) for two others and a header for a third unknown station.

KA7FOO was 100% copy during the comment round at about 8:40pm. That’s where I found the answer to the 40 meter experiment. My take on that is when the bands go long after sundown, 80 reaches out to where 40 used to go and 40 reaches out to where 20 went during the day. If you want closer in copy, go to 160, which will be good to where 80 used to go at night. Just my 2-cents. Howard KB6NN
</snip>

Howard’s comments are consistent with Amateur net conventions. 160M is generally a good back up for 80m NVIS comms, but 160m antennas are not common. They take lots of real estate and wire. City station seldom work 160m. Your observations and suggestions are welcome.

Although the band was poor, some stations printed well:

RX:KR7KR (UT)
RX:KE6SLS (CA)
RX:KB6NN (CA)
RX:KE6SLS (CA)

Thanks again for continuing to work through tough band condx. I hope this isn’t our lot for 2018, but if it is, we’ll be better prepared for passing digital traffic under all condx. I look forward to working with you all in 2018. Mindy & I wish you health and happiness in the new year! 73 Doug K7KY

ORCA ANNOUNCEMENTS 26 December 2017

Tonight’s Optional FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex52.txt’, an FLMSG
/FLAMP exercise using the FLMSG ICS-213 form. Complete the instructions
and send the file to NCS during TRAFFIC round using FLAMP, or send
your own practice traffic or QRU.

The FLAMP exercise for tonight repeats a question we asked last year. We
can better understand Comment round signal reports if we know more about
the stations involved.

We’ve had a difficult time with band condx lately. Some stations close to
NCS have been unable to work the net for weeks. It’s discouraging to hear
other stations, but not NCS. We’ll try an alternate 40m freq tonight; it
may help some and hinder others. We’ll see. Last night I checked into the
Humboldt Emergency Digital Net (100mi) w/o difficulty. The Humboldt
stations have been unable to work ORCA lately. I’m hopeful that better
band condx will hold for tonight.

Speaking of band condx, last week Mindy & I were preparing for ORCA using
dummy loads. Mid-net we see ‘W7HHE testing’. Now, that’s a good signal!

Net Report posted as soon as we can…

Test Image was absolutely perfect.
Will email the image to you Doug.

Good signals from all the station tonight.
All messages copied 100%.

My 80 mtr dipole is designed and tuned for voice.
SWR is quite high for this net. I guess I will
be designing another antenna in 2018. May need to
do the same for 40 mtr.

No copy on KE6SLS on 7081KHz.
Tried several times.
There was a RTTY from KB0EL and
that was all on the freq.
Glad to do the test.
