The passing of our friend and colleague, Charles W5CLE, made tonight’s net a little sad for us. We get to know some net members quite well. We often work with them off-net by phone & email. We talked with Charles frequently, until last summer when extreme heat put him in the hospital. Charles first checked into ORCA DIGITAL NET on March 28th, 2017, nearly 5yrs ago. The following week he brought Tom WB7TZD and eventually, a number of Vancouver digital Operators.

Charles was an Electronic Engineer and an outstanding Radio Operator. He’s been an Amateur Radio Operator for over 70 years. We’ve been missing Charles since last Summer; we think of him nearly every net. God Bless our friend Charles W5CLE, may he Rest in Peace.

Hats-Off to Charles’ friend, Brian KH7BHK for supporting Charles when he needed it. Brian was the only person permitted to visit Charles, so he now has lots of Relay experience. Brian and Tom WB7TZD have keep us in the loop with Charles since last Summer. We really appreciate them for keeping us connected.

Not the best band for some tonight, but OK for others. We didn’t log any DX stations tonight. The VidID we couldn’t read at Ck-In was John KD0NBH in Kansas City,MO. We called for a Relay, but no one could read his VidID. It was very faint on the waterfall. John managed to copy some of the Advanced NBEMS Exercise.

The Advanced Exercise went well. Mindy W7ZAP chose some of our most dependable modes this evening. Four stations CONFIRMED the first pass in THOR-100. One station CONFIRMED the 2nd pass in THOR-50×1. The 3rd pass in MFSK-32 didn’t net any results, two stations still needed two Blocks. A 4th pass in MFSK-22 CONFIRMED them. We don’t usually do more than three passes, but when time permits, we try to CONFIRM everyone. When we can’t, we suggest they Fill or CONFIRM files in the after-net Monitor’s Session.

In tonight’s Announcements we reviewed our Comment policy of no Politics, Religion, Social Causes, or Virtue Signaling. ORCA has always stuck close to business; we’re here to learn and practice our skills. We can address other issues elsewhere.

ORCA members work so smoothly and efficiently together you might guess we’re much alike. That guess would probably be wrong. Although we have strong common interests, we’re actually quite diverse socially and politically. This is why our strict Comment policy is important. We remain focused on our common interest and don’t digress into social/political/religious issues. Thanks for supporting ORCA and helping keep it focused and useful.

Next Tuesday, 04/May/22 will have a Basic NBEMS Exercise. There will be only two Basic NBEMS Exercises each month, the 1st and 2nd Tuesday. The remaining Tuesdays will have Advanced NBEMS Exercises. We’ll continue experimenting with Macro except in Advance Exercise sessions where we have less time available.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight we’ll run an Advanced NBEMS Exercise w/Traffic Round. Advanced Exercises accommodate eight stations. Beginning in May, the 1st & 2nd Tuesdays are Basic NBEMS Exercises sessions. The remaining Tuesdays are Advanced NBEMS Exercise sessions.

These 2 posts by Fred AA7BQ, QRZ.com Founder, are worth a read: https://forums.qrz.com/index.php?threads/a-message-to-our-members-about-politics.758779/  Citing sweeping social/political changes, Fred has altered QRZ’s 28yr old comment policy. He’s removed QRZ’s only Political Forum and restricted comments and signature bylines to eliminate Politics, Political Parties, Propaganda, and Virtue Signaling. His experience and reasoning is compelling.

ORCA has followed a similar policy since inception. We’ve stuck closely to radio related Comments. We did relax this policy for a few months when the COVID-19 Pandemic arrived. We returned to our previous policy when it became clear that there was deep disagreement about the immediate and long-term effects of experimental mRNA injections, lockdowns, face masks, and alternative remedies.

We meet to practice digital networking and digital traffic-handling skills. We’re a remarkable group of competent and skilled radio Operators. One factor supporting the efficiency of our network is our focus on Amateur digital operations to the exclusion of Politics, Religion, Social Agendas, Propaganda, and Virtue Signaling.

ORCA DIGITAL NET is not about supporting or opposing Government or Social Agendas; our focus is the skills, strategies, and tactics of digital networking and digital traffic-handling. We’re doing a good job; let’s stick w/our format.

Ck-In is improving by the week. Nearly everyone is using ORCA Protocol. Incoming stations often need a few sessions to sort it out. We appreciate your use of Protocol. It contributes to an orderly Ck-In.

We regret reporting that our friend Charles W5CLE passed away in Vancouver,WA on April 14th, 2022. Charles was 90yrs old.  He’s been an Amateur Radio Operator for 70 years. Charles’ ORCA membership goes back many years. He was the first ORCA Op in the Vancouver,WA area and was instrumental in bringing many of his digital colleagues to ORCA and developing local digital training. He was an Electronic Engineer and well respected Amateur Radio Operator.

We’ll have a Moment of Silence in rememberance of our friend and colleague, Charles W5CLE…

God Bless Charles. Next is the FLAMP Exercise w/Mindy W7ZAP < <MYCALL>/NCS<TX><RX>

The COMMENT ROUND is next.
Brad WA7HHE is up first < NCS

ORCA < WA7HHE, hoping this would not be considered political. We had a very interesting CERT Class this last week on how to survive a Nuclear Attack. Figured in our area would only have a 2 hours time to get the inside windows and doors sealed with plastic and duck tape. Then admonished us to purchase a Dosimeter to measure radiation levels to check the sealing work and when safe to go outside. Weather is slowly warming up in Nevada. Still having some milder wind fronts passing through but it’s getting better. Will be working on the antennas at the cabin later this week. Had some real nasty wind gusts that did some damage but I came up with a better build that should protect that. Good net tonight. Thanks for your dedication.

I completed an upgrade on this Xubuntu computer today.  Once I found a work-a-round, I ran the script and it worked nicely.  Now have a much newer FLDigi.  Port audio WORKS again.  Rig control DOESN’T WORK :|  I
will hopefully sort out the rig end, it’s important for several of my ham programs.

Sorry to hear about loosing one of our members.  May he R.I.P.

I checked the calendar for tonight’s session and thought I read “basic exercise,” will have to go look again!  Still, enjoy these exercises!

I DO fear summer time condx are going to be very tough.  As the high bands blossom, the low bands suffer.  I have a very difficult time trying to hear the Dipsea net at 5pm. . .  But the high bands have been booming.  I worked as far east on the north American Continent yesterday on 15m!  VP9 station

Thanks for the memories!  Look for you all again “down the log.”

I have a real interesting question to ask.
How are partial messages in FLAMP recouperated after FLDIGI has locked up/crashed and needs reboot?  FLAMP comes up empty…

There’s one to chew on.

SHORTWAVE RADIOGRAM

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
