When Rick K0KEX checks-in from Smithville,MO, we know the band is really improving. Steve WY7SJM has checked in from Casper,WY most of October, anther indication of better band condx. Our Rosters are usually larger in Winter than Summer. We have 29 ck-ins tonight w/8 Active stations for the NBEMS Exercise. 7 of 8 stations CONFIRMED the Exercise file in a single pass in MFSK-128, another indication of improving band condx. We hope it continues; DST usually sets us back a bit.

Thanks for working with the Relay Macro. It’s a very basic Macro that makes Relay during a digital net easy and intuitive. We had a couple software anomalies tonight. Announcements contained the Relay Macro, so we couldn’t send Announcements as we usually do with the <FILE> Tag. When we tried to paste the file in the TX buffer, it failed. With no time for troubleshooting, we altered the Tags, but that didn’t work as we thought and the Macro printed weird in Announcements.

Later, during the Traffic Round, our FLDIGI RX que showed Ken KR7KR’s file 100%, but when we sent our Report, FLAMP asked for two blocks. That’s only happened once before. Another unexplained FLAMP anomaly.

ORCA DIGITAL NET welcomes 1st time Ck-In Christian K7XTN in Seattle,WA. Thanks to Mark W7EAZ in Federal Way,WA for referring Christian to ORCA. We’ll ask Christian to ck-in QNX while learning the NBEMS Exercises silently, checking his results in the after-net Monitor’s Session.

If you’ve begun to track the #macros #hashtag @ NBEMS@groups.io, you know the next post concerning #macros was answered directly by Dave W1HKJ, FLDIGI’s Developer. This is an excellent place for Macro discussion and troubleshooting. The Moderators are veteran FLDIGI Ops.

We ran well past our 1hr net-time target tonight. The larger the Roster, the longer the net take, generally. Ck-In didn’t run as smoothly as usual tonight; we had a number of pileups. Acknowledging each Op takes a little time. We copy/paste their callsign into FLDIGI’s Logger ‘Call’ window, TX the Acknowledgment Macro, copy part of that from the RX buffer and paste that string into the Roster. We can’t begin to Copy until the station stops sending as the RX buffer is scrolling. When the next station coattails the 1st, we must wait until that stations stops sending. We can fall behind quickly when two or three stations call in succession w/o waiting for us to acknowledge. Our Roster has more information than most net-Rosters. We think it’s worth the bother to include each Ops QTH. Please wait for us to acknowledge the previous station. That said, we know not everyone hears every signal. Thanks for paying attention and doing your best.

Here’s another use for the TxID Button. We use TxID to practice focus and Situational Awareness. Although our NCS Macros mostly manage TxID automatically, we check that Button’s status frequently during nets. We occasionally change TxID manually for practice. It helps train our minds to actively managing TxID and other FLDIGI features, instead of depending on Macros or simply ‘set & forget’. This practice generalizes to other FLDIGI feature better managed mindfully in real time.

Tonight’s net-images reflect everyone’s reception of Don KJ7VGV’s signal from Reno,NV:

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Unless announced otherwise, every weekly session will have an NBEMS Exercise w/Traffic Round. Monitors can work the Exercises silently and check their work in the after-net Monitor’s Session.
Tonight, Don KJ7VGV will send the TESTimage with the Path Evaluation Macro from Reno,NV at the beginning and end of the net instead of NCS. Please email both images as usual. Our results will reflect how well the net copies Don. Over time, we’ll do this for all interested Ops.
Last week, we posted this Relay Macro:

Steps#1-4 must be executed in order.

If you’ve configured the Relay Macro, scroll up in the RX buffer and copy anyone’s Ck-In string. Before your Comments, send your Relay Macro. This Macro works for a single CALLSIGN or lengthy comments. As you see, the Macro TAGS didn’t work well just now…  I’m unable to paste into the TX buffer tonite and tried to remove part of eac tag, w/o success… anyway, I’ve sent this macro numerous time already   it’s quite simple but very useful.  If you have it working, try it out in the Comment round tonite… Next is the NBEMS Exercise w/Mindy W7ZAP  < K7KY

Tonight’s exercise begins in MFSK-128 (480wpm, 1920hz, FEC). We’ll fill
in MFSK-64 (240wpm, 1260hz, FEC) & MFSK-32 (120wpm, 630hz, FEC) .

California conducts an earthquake drill every year. it’s a statewide drill, but organized county by county. I know here in Humboldt we still had no NBEMS component to the Ham radio part of the drill. Perhaps even more disheartening to see was the dropping of NBEMS in Mendocino where IT HAD been included last year. The Mendocino group has even developed their own custom earthquake reporting and disaster assessment forms for FLMsg. I’m not clear on who makes these decisions or why. Really need to find out. It’s a significant oversight and setback in my view.
Interesting night for the net this evening on the propagation front. If it weren’t for W6ACR (I copied 67% of ur MFSK-128 FLAmp, BTW) and myself (sole non-onfirmer), tonight’s exercise might have been boring. You are all WELCOME, ha-ha! I got 100% on KE6SLS’ first go at whatever he did there (PSK-250R, I think).

Yes, Lamar   it’s hard to understand some of the decisions made by emergency officials and some of the advice they get from Amateurs is often off course   so many operations still focus on Winlink and don’t want to use FLDIGI NABEMS     weird thinking, I think BK

Blue skies and sunshine here today.  Never know what to expect and it was a pleasure to see the sun and the charge.  Had doors & windows open enjoying warmer temps finally.
This Thursday I will be assisting Del Norte during their SET. We’ll be using VHF this time around.  The op in Del Norte did a great job helping our Humboldt Great California Shake Out.  Great getting to know some ops on HF.
I did quite a bit of dabbling on the high bands today.  Was able to cp traffic on 20m first pass, though never made contact with kb7vx. Then turned to CW and worked some fine stations on 15m.  Actually thinking about working SS cw this year . . . With a straight key! Corned beef & cabbage with all the extra fixin’s for dinner next 7 or 8 days!  First round tonight was a winner Jack’s signal is VERY over-modulated.  I know his ALC meter would be pegged on the verge of breaking.  On digital, the only meter you should have displayed is the ALC meter.  That meter will immediately notify the op that something is WRONG with their signal.  Jack, I won’t be a bit surprised if your audio drive setting is 100% (or higher) on your computer or radio interface.
Speaking of out of control ALC, I decided to experiment with pskr-x2/250 and noted MY ALC maxed out!?!?  Quickly maximized my audio mixer which had died. Reloaded mixer tab and found my audio at 45% vice 22% where it should be.  That’s why it’s so important to eyeball our ALC meters.  Sometimes our computers just get a case of stupid and we MUST react quickly to the situation.  Further, my test mode failed!    MFSK to the rescue!
Adding to Lamar’s critique about Shake Out, NCS demonstrated why we use phonic spelling alphabet on SSB.  Frustrating . . . However, This was NCS’s first go!
Stay well, practice often, and hope to see you down the wf soon!

I used K0KEX as my test relay as I copied his ck-in from MO. I was trying to watch a little local news but there were more political adds than news. So I turned it off. The cabin is in winter mode but I’m still building a wall on the east side. Hope to get it done before it turns really cold. Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
