W7ZAP Mindy Brookings,OR NCS

The band tonight was much like it’s been the past few months. Tough for Phone nets, but reasonable for digital nets. Some QSB and some short-skip degradation as the net progressed. Adding the * option at ck-in for veteran stations is working well. With 26 check-ins tonight and only 5 stations in the FLAMP Exercise, the net flowed briskly and wasn’t overlong. Mindy W7ZAP was swamped briefly during ck-in with a pile-up of three stations calling on top of each other. This sometimes happens when Ops cannot copy each other. We start ck-in early to increase ck-in time and ease our workload. It take us 15-20 seconds to answer and then add you to the Roster. Thanks for spacing your call during ck-in.

Overall, the net ran smoothly tonight as usual. We did have some doubling and other small issues. When we address net discrepancies, don’t be offended by observations and comments that don’t apply to you. ORCA usually runs like clockwork, due to the attention and focus you bring every session. Because it’s a training net, it’s important we practice correctly.

Newer Ops may not fully grasp the use and function of Pre-Toning. Sending a brief tuning-tone before your message is the key element; it announces your intention to transmit. Equally important is pausing after the tone to insure the frequency is clear. Toning and transmitting w/o pausing to check the frequency is like honking before zipping blindly through a potentially busy intersection. Pre-tone, then stop, look, and listen. The FLDIGI auto-pre-Tone feature is not appropriate for the net; you can’t pause to check the frequency.

We’re actually learning much more than how to process digital traffic with NBEMS software.  We’re learning to parse instructions fully and implement them correctly.  We’re learning to master rather complex tasks, string them together in routines, and execute them quickly under a little time pressure. We’re learning to combine NBEMS tools with PC applications to manipulate files. We’re learning the PC file system in order to locate and retrieve files stored on the HD. There’s a lot more to digital traffic-handling than mastering the NBEMS suite. Underlying all this are Directed Net protocols. Without order, it’s difficult to engage numerous digital stations efficiently.

You’re not likely to encounter the pace and intensity of the FLAMP Exercise on a digital Traffic net, but you may experience greater pressure when working an actual Emergency Net. Regular ORCA practice will help prepare you to execute traffic-handling routines with confidence when conditions are chaotic and speed and accuracy are essential.

DIRECTED NET Protocol: All traffic goes through NCS.  It’s not OK to call your friend during the FLAMP Exercise. Following Directed Net routines is what enables ORCA to operate efficiently with very minimal input from NCS. If you need to contact NCS, send your callsign between transmissions at 1500 or on the WF. Please don’t disrupt the FLAMP Exercise unless it’s URGENT.

We’re delighted to Welcome Steve WY7SJM in Casper,WY. In seven years, we’ve not worked stations in WY and MT. We’ve wondered if it was due to our antennas or a lack of digital Ops in WY/MT.  Now we know, Steve can hear us. It gives me hope for MT(-: Check out tonight’s contact map.  The band is beginning to favor mid-usa stations again; there’s quite a cluster there tonight. I hope they will develop a digital Traffic net like Western Digital Net. There seems to be sufficient Ops in the area and many would come from ORCA/WDN. I hope we will develop HF digital Traffic nets across the country that routinely work together.

Thanks for your participation and support.  Without you, we wouldn’t be a training and practice net. Your practice is the new Ops training. Don’t forget WESTERN DIGITAL NET on Thursday evening, 1930p/0330z, 3.581+1500, MFSK-32, Steve K6ETA/NCS. Steve begins taking early ck-ins a half hour or so before 1930p. We hope to see you there, and back with us next Tuesday evening.  73 Doug K7KY

What May Happen
More cases are likely to be identified in the coming days, including more cases in the United States. It’s also likely that person-to-person spread will continue to occur, including in the United States. Widespread transmission of COVID-19 in the United States would translate into large numbers of people needing medical care at the same time. Schools, childcare centers, workplaces, and other places for mass gatherings may experience more absenteeism. Public health and healthcare systems may become overloaded, with elevated rates of hospitalizations and deaths. Other critical infrastructure, such as law enforcement, emergency medical services, and transportation industry may also be affected. Health care providers and hospitals may be overwhelmed. At this time, there is no vaccine to protect against COVID-19 and no medications approved to treat it. Nonpharmaceutical interventions would be the most important response strategy.

If having to care for a infected family member consider the following:
N-95 Masks are sold out at Home Depot and Amazon. Some available on ebay. Nitriale latex free gloves still available on Amazon. Eye protection, Tyvex suits, lots of chlorox spray and wipes for surfaces around the home.

ANNOUNCEMENTS 25/Feb/2020

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex158.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/
FLAMP exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that
file to NCS in the Traffic Round with FLAMP.

Normally, we eschew commentary about Politics, Religion, and Aliens, but the
current explosion of Coronavirus cases worldwide is extraordinary. We need
to track this situation closely. You cannot fully grasp the magnitude of this
epidemic by watching mainstream news. The current belief in two week
quarantines is probably half as long as needed. Infected people may be
symptom free for 28 days. Coronavirus survives on objects for 8-9 days.
The only effective tactic currently known is complete isolation.

Some of us cannot isolate ourselves due to work and family responsibilities.
Be vigilant, it may be better to incur some financial loss than risk a
potentially terminal illness. Coronavirus is a greater threat to seniors;
many Amateur Operators are seniors. Let’s do whatever we can to avoid
contamination and share useful information with our friends and colleagues.

Doug and I have been staying home for four weeks now. I go out once a week
to pick-up groceries thru the Fred Meyer shop-by-app program. I don’t have
to interact with anyone directly and it’s working well. This situation may
persist for months. We hope not, but prepare for the possibility. You know
the old saying about an ounce of prevention. Be prepared! All three west
coast States have people in quarantine; CA and WA have confirmed cases.

Thanks to everyone that helped launch the WESTERN DIGITAL NET. It’s off to
an auspicious beginning. Steve K6ETA is looking for regular contributors of
topics pertinent to EMCOMM and Amateur Radio Operators. Fred KI7TPD is
going to bring Space WX Bulletins, always a good indication of upcoming
band condx. If you have an interest in relevant topics, please consider
becoming a regular contributor. If you’re busy on Thursday evenings, try
to check in&out. Steve calls for early ck-ins 30min or so before the net.
Checking in&out puts you on the Roster, and reflects your interest and
support.

Good net tonight!

Sadly I will probably will not be able to check in to the WDN this week. I will be north of Salt Lake for a meeting… I will take a portable radio so who knows I might be able to check in if all goes well and I can get it set up in time…

COVID-19 is a scary situation. As a teacher and department chair I have to meet with a number of different groups (students, perspective students, public etc.). I hope we can avoid the COVID-19, Bonnie (KI7WEX, my wife) and I just recovered from a related virus and it was NASTY!

Stay safe and healthy!

What a pile up at check in tonight!

I completely agree with your Coronavirus concerns. I now use nitrial gloves and really monitor myself around others. This IS scary and I fear we are only on the cusp of what is to come :(

It was difficult copy as you started TFC round and the signal at 2500WF showed up hammering on my front end. This is where a good SSB filter would be nice on my old rig! I am able to use the IFshift to good use.

New antenna here tonight. Converted my Inverted Vee to a Delta Vee. Noise went from s7 to s2. Even though NCS is shooting right over the top of me, anytill have GREAT copy on them. Exciting times here :)

Very nice to hear ALL the DX stations checking in ABOVE the noise floor!

Great sun last few days and more to come. Batteries are fully charged and radio shack 100%

TU NCS!

Please check out our new website!

WDN

The only reason WDN exists is because ORCA Ops have done the work to make it happen. Hats off to all ORCA ops!

The Corona Virus will do far less damage than the panic will… so be prepared to hunker down, learn about and practice good hygiene, stay calm and be informed. The rest is just nature doing its thing.

Fortune favors the prepared! =)
