As daytime lengthens, Ck-In for distant stations grows increasingly difficult.  We didn’t see the Missouri stations until later in the net. Even then, we wouldn’t have logged them without Steve W7WSV’s Relay. Summer is nearly here; we’ll soon roll Early Ck-in back to 30min.  Winter usually means larger Rosters, but not this Winter.  The unprecedented COVID operation has upended many social patterns and conventions. Be prepared for unusual events this Summer.

Adding DominoEX-22 to the NBEMS Exercise was a blast from the past. If you’ve joined ORCA in the last few years, you wouldn’t have encountered DominoEX modes in the NBEMS Exercise. Years ago, we experimented extensively with digital modes. Over time, the more robust modes came to the fore.  I’ve been talking with Emery KE7XV about FEMA’s use of PSK-31 & MT63-2KL for their monthly Exercise. We’ve been discussing alternate modes that might better serve their purpose.  Today, MT63-2KL is still a popular VHF/UHF mode, but savvy Ops seldom us it on HF.  PSK-31 has also lost favor.  It’s a good QSO Mode, but not robust enough for traffic.

Our discussions reminded me of the Mode Shoot-Outs we use to run during NBEMS Exercises. We sent a copy of the NBEMS Exercise instructions in two passes of two modes and wrapped the Exercise with MFSK-32. It enabled us to compare modes in the same band condx, making the comparison more relevant.  Because our members are widespread, we learned how condx effect distance and and direction. OFDM is a case in point; some stations may CONFIRM a single pass, while stations in a different direction report, ‘no copy’.

Two stations took advantage of the after-net Monitor’s Session tonight. When you work the NBEMS Exercise silently as a Monitor, the Monitor’s Session is where you check your work. We Fill or CONFIRM the instruction file and CONFIRM completed Exercises. If you need technical assistance, we may ask you to wait while we Fill & CONFIRM files for others. The Monitor’s Session enables incoming stations to learn NBEMS Exercise w/o the pressure of working the Active net.

Thanks for emailing the original ORCAtest images. Next session, 02/May/23, Don KJ7VGV will conduct the NBEMS Exercise. Later in May, Jaye KE6SLS & Matt N6FPV will demonstrate off-net-frequency traffic-handling during a NBEMS Exercise Traffic Round. If you’d like to conduct NBEMS Exercises or participate in an off-net-freq traffic-handling Exercise, email us: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise features FLMSG form ICS-213. Next session, the 1st Tuesday in May, Don KJ7VGV will conduct the NBEMS Exercise. Near the end of May, Jaye KE6SLS & Matt N6FPV will demonstrate off-net-frequency traffic-handling in the NBEMS Exercise Traffic Round.

During nets, your Cursor should be LOCKED @ 1500wf and your VFO LOCKED @ 3.581Khz. Modern Amateur radios don’t usually drift more than a couple hertz. We occasionally see signals 4-6 hz off 1500. This could be due to radio age or an UNLOCKED Cursor or VFO. Precise tuning helps the decoder cope with adverse band condx. With AFC OFF, FLDIGI will only follow a few hertz off frequency. If your further off, decoding will degrade.

MFSK  ‘…has full-time Forward Error Correction, so it is very robust. Tuning must be very accurate, and the software will not tolerate differences between transmit and receive frequency. The mode was designed for long path HF DX, and due to its great sensitivity is one of the best for long distance QSOs and skeds.’   FLDIGI User Manual 4.1.24

This is worth repeating, ‘TUNING MUST BE VERY ACCURATE’. Also from the Manual, ‘MFSK-32 and MFSK-64 are high baud rate and wide bandwidth modes designed for use on VHF and UHF.’ Really? MFSK 32/64 intended for VHF/UHF? Why are we doings so well with 32&64 on HF? We do well with MFSK because we fine tune our audio signals and stick to net frequency. That said, not every station is exactly on freq every session.  Some wander a few hertz above and below 1500wf.  Correctly tuning our audio signal and staying exactly on frequency insures the best chance for decoding.  Among the variables that effect decoding, these two are under our control. No matter how poor the band, optimizing those variables increases our odds of CONFIRMING traffic.

AFC OFF & Cursor LOCKED @ 1500 are ORCA Protocols. FLDIGI still follows incoming signals a few hertz to optimize decoding, but doesn’t chase far-off signals as it would with AFC ON. With Cursor LOCKED @ 1500, your transmissions will be @ 1500 whatever the Cursor frequency.

Image issues:  ‘Picture with a slant If either the send, receive, or both ends of the transmission are using an uncalibrated sound card whose sampling rate is not an exact multiple of 8000 Hz the resulting picture at the receive end will appear slanted.’  See FLDIGI User Manual 4.1.24 for soundcard calibration instructions.

K7KY  < W7ZAP
It’s been a while since we used DOMEX-22. Thought we’d dust it off and give it a spin.

We send files in FLAMP in small blocks when band condx are poor. If we use 2 large blocks instead of 8 small blocks, a single error in one block requires resending half the file.  An error occuring in a block 1/4 the size takes 1/4 the time to resend.

Here’s the breakdown of RX by modes:
DomEX-22: 3 stns
THOR-50×1: 3 stns
MFSK-32: 3 stns

Even spread among the 3 modes :-)

Well that solar activity kind of put a damper on the condx last few days eh, I went from averaging 50-70 FT8 to like 5!  Is getting better though today.

Still having an unusual issue with my 746 power cycling, I have isolated it down to maybe the power connector as it seems that wiggling it can cause reboot!  Very annoying issue.

I am doing CERT training this upcoming weekend here in Scotia, very much looking forward to that!

Nice work to Bruno & Steve for the relay check-ins!

toughbook–the saga:  As we recall from last weeks comments, Doug sent
me an old laptop.  I was tickled to have it, 100% working and now have
a portable.  I started working on building some ham radio packages–
that is compiling the source code to build installable debian packages.
I hit several road blocks but with aid from fellow hams, managed to
work towards my goal.  BUT . .  I ended up with a huge noise that
was really clobbering me.  So bad, I was resorting to using online SDRs
to copy.  Then a few mornings ago, I suddenly remembered that Doug had
a power supply for laptop but it was “noisy.”  The toughbook is in
the opposite side of the house, no where near my ham shack.  Will I
decided to unplug that thing on my early AM net and BINGO, no more
noise!  HOLY COWABUNGA was that PSU nasty.  Now I always unplug before
I turn on the radio here!  Thanks to Doug for helping me track down
and stomp out my own made QRM 😄

Today we finally had a real spring day.  High today was 59F and we
are going to enjoy a dandy sunset this evening.

Many modes are very useful in various situations, however, MFSK32 & 64
are the defacto standard for getting it done!

Tonight I selected pskr63x5  a five carrier psk mode.  I warned all to
set SQL to zero as this will give best chance FLD will copy the xmsn.
Also, with PSK multi-carrier, you WILL note a very low output power on
your bridge or radio PO scale.  This is just like high speed WL2K,
even though you might have set output for 50w, you might only see 10w
or 15w, but your ALC is just flickering.  This is normal.  Trying to
up your output audio will only cause splattering.  Fascinating!

100% FLA copy on this end tonight!  Sigs got better as the sun set.

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

I have a reading problem and what I found that helps me is to do the following, in this type of exercise:

open FLMSG   >   Select ICS213 form.
Click SAVE, then, click on DESKTOP (on far left of file mangler)
Then, I copy your exercise name in FLDIGI and PASTE it into the save for FLMSG, then I just type in my call sign.   Once I finish that
step, the file is now saved on Desktop and easy to navigate to from the FLAMP   ADD FILE button.

RG, no worries.

April, a reminder.   To find files, like an image you just copied tonight, go up to top
left, click on FILE > Folders      Then you can navigate your file mangler to IMAGES.   All images that are copied by FLDIGI are saved in that folder.   At that point it is easy to COPY and PASTE onto your desktop.   Then you can send it from there.   😄

Always shortcuts 😄

gn and have a good evening all.   73
