Although the band was both noisy and fading in and out, we did pretty well. Unfortunately, the band totally failed Brad WA7HHE in UT. He had marginal copy at check-in and lost us as the net progressed. That’s unusual for Brad. He usually does very well from UT. Howard has done nicely with his antenna. He was copied well by most stations at 4w. Howard’s ready for summer QRP conditions. Me too!

There was a bit of confusion on the net tonight. Mostly mine, I think. The REPORT round for FLAMP has been running well since we sorted out the process, but it easily runs a little off track. Maybe because I’m not always specific enough about what we’re doing. Anyway, you all flowed along perfectly and most of the confusion was probably in my head.

Maybe a quick procedural review is in order. The two main events of every net are the traffic round and comment round. During traffic, you can send formal or informal traffic or keyboard to the net. Traffic can be anything you send in FLMSG or FLAMP. You can also tell us anything of general radio interest by keyboard. The net is interested in your station, changes to your station that effect your signal, personal radio projects, etc. During the comment round we usually concentrate on reception of the member stations during traffic, and our reports have grown more sophisticated and useful lately. This is also a good time to ask questions or make observations.

Some messages in the traffic round will be in FLAMP. Following an FLAMP message, NCS will prompt the next station in order for a FLAMP REPORT. Each station in order is prompted with their callsign only. They send the FLAMP REPORT or ‘no flamp’ or ‘no copy’. When we come back around, the originating station sends the fill blocks needed. Sometimes, NCS will ask another station to relay the fill blocks. We’re practicing the digital traffic process; completing each message to every station is not always necessary. You can usually fill an incomplete message after net.

Ralph WB6SDR sent the first FLAMP message tonight and I relayed the fills. It worked perfectly and we completed the message in one round. Ralph’s message was his reception report and he did a great job with info and format.

Reception reports are one of the more interesting features of the net. Learning how well you’re copied at distant stations is both interesting and useful. Our comment and reception reports have become much more useful as more experienced Operators join the net. I thought I would do better tonight using Mindy’s antenna, but was surprised to have the Eureka stations hear Mindy better while using my antenna. Grrrrr! Still, the jury is out on antenna performance with just one evening for comparing. I have hope. We’re thinking of replacing Mindy’s 135′ doublet with a 270′ OCF to take advantage of the 370′ between the Fir trees. OCF antennas are new to me.

Thanks for taking time out of your evening to work with us tonight. I hope to see you all again next week. Best wishes, Doug K7KY NCS

Doug now that I have watched, Mindy is 3 or 4 dB STRONGER than you. You seem to have more QSB than Mindy.

It is nice to do a round “FLAMP or KBRD.” That flows very well and it is faster.

The net went well tonight.

WA7HHE Brad ur here? < K7KY

ALL ORCA I think this is getting more confusing. We don’t usuallly do FLAMP in the comment and reception report round and I

shoudl have just moved along with what we wre doing… anyway, we’re back on track for comment… Ralph has actually given his

comments and we’ll move on to W7GBB Bob… take it Bob.. < K7KY

K7KY de W7GBB

I think it is nice to flow a little FLAMP traffic and if there is none a station can send comments in flmsg/wrap. Whatever, I don’t think

it was terrible confusing.

I not that I copy better at 2000 hours than 30 minutes earlier.

K7KY de W7GBB

W7GBB Tnx Bob I agree about the flexibility and I’m working on being a flexible NCS We don’t usually do traffic in the comment

rounds and FLAMP requires the REPORT round as a follow up we certainly can do FLAMP anywhere, but it does take more time

and attention than regular traffic… anyway, we’re doing great and I welcome the little challenges that help me grow OK Over to Rob

:mg:873 Mill Valley (Marin Co. CA) conducts an annual evacuation drill for different parts of the town. They have a significant wildfire

risk. A fire in ~1929 consumed most of the hills above the down (now heavily populated) as well as what is now the downtown area.

Lots of heavily wooded box canyons with narrow roads and only one road out.

Last Saturday MVFD, MVPD, CERT, Red Cross, and Marin Medical Reserve Corps supported a simulated evacuation of Warner

Canyon to a local school. MMRC is a pilot ACS program and provided UHF simplex traffic to me, acting as RACES/ACS relay to the

county EOC. Traffic was successfully sent by packet to the EOC, and confirmation was relayed (again UHF simplex) to the MMRC

field site where they used an HT and acoustic coupling to and Android phone with AndFlmsg. 100% success on message passing.

MT63-2kL on UHF is amazing!

the difference between our 2 antennas over the next few weeks. Fun net and as always, good to see everyone on the WF tonight :-)

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB.
