Either the 3 new THOR Modes are outstanding or the band was, maybe both are true. In any case, THOR-56,44,& 32 did very well. 8 stations worked the NBEMS Exercise, but only 7 could participate. These new THOR modes are only available in the latest versions of the NBEMS suite. 5 stations CONFIRMED the 1st pass in THOR-56, 1 CONFIRMED the 2nd pass in THOR-44, & 1 CONFIRMED THOR-32.

Logging John KD0NBH & Rick K0KEX in Missouri is another indication of improving 80m band condx. We also logged Steve WY7SJM in Casper,WY, but this week he needed a Relay from Tom WA7JYK in Joseph,OR. Rick didn’t copy the whole net, but he did decode Ken KR7KR’s traffic. Ken’s station does well with mid-USA signals. A number of ORCA Ops have exceptional signals and frequently Relay lite signals to NCS. Our signal covers very well, but reception depends heavily on sending station signals. Some Ops’ antenna are restricted by HOA rules.

Welcome aboard to two new stations, Brian W7OWO in Dundee,OR & Rick KJ7ROX in Payson,AZ. We logged Rick with Ken KR7KR’s Relay. Hopefully, we’ll copy him direct in the future; we often have difficulty copying Steve W7WSV in Mesa,AZ and John KS6M in Oakland,CA. They’re all in line from Brookings,OR, so it may be a feature of our antennas. Welcome back to Barry KJ7WHE in Nampa,ID.

Doug is still waiting for FCC to accept his $35 License renewal fee for K7KY. He thinks he’s ticked every box and completed every form, but maybe he missed something. Meantime he operates under Mindy W7ZAP’s supervision.

Tonight’s net and NBEMS Exercise was smooth and efficient. Thanks for your attention and dedication. Our nets are useful to those just learning about digital networking. We wouldn’t be a useful training net without your participation. Working with you is a pleasure.

^rANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise features the FLMSG ICS-309 form. You may be the station that starts and emergency net. You will be logging stations until relieved by another Op. Familiarity with ICS-309 will be helpful.

The 20m Transcontinental Propagation Test Net last week was successful. 40+ stations checked in w/Don AB1PH in Maine. He plans another 20m Net Oct25th w/simultaneous Zoom back channel:

“another 20 meter net Wed Oct 25 @ 9 PM ET/6 PM PT 14,068 KHz, @ 1500 Hz, THOR-11
– testing with a second west/west coast NCS (edit,Jaye KE6SLS)

Don Rolph is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Topic: 2nd 20 meter Transcontinental net back channel
Time: Oct 25, 2023 09:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)

Join Zoom Meeting
https://us02web.zoom.us/j/4418320146

Meeting ID: 441 832 0146″

Our colleague, Jaye KE6SLS, will be the Western NCS. If you missed the 1st 20m net, try to work this one. Don AB1PH was good copy in Oregon last time; he didn’t copy stations close to his QTH as well. Don KJ7VGV will help cover 20m dead zones. If a Nat’l Digital Training/Emergence Net interest you, tune in & participate. Net schedule & structure will be determined by those participating.

The first 20m net went very well and revealed a few issues. 2/3rds of participants were well off frequency. THOR-11 is off-frequency tolerant, but THOR-11 may not be the eventual net Mode. Always match your station to Net Control’s signal and LOCK the Cursor. Last net’s format called for TxID Active for all station. Hopefully, this will be changed. Off-Freq stations w/TxID active move many stations off NCS. NCS was @ 1484 instead of the planned 1500. Stations LOCKED @ 1500 were able to copy Don @ 1484, but were sending @ 1500 where they were
LOCKED

10 ORCA/WDN Ops participated last week and they all Pre-Toned b4 TX. Pre-Toning doesn’t seem to be routine out East. On-Frequency & Pre-Toning are important to conducting efficient digital nets.

Unbeknownst to Doug K7KY, his Amateur Radio License expired last month. The FCC website renewal process is complex. Doug completed all required steps; he’s waiting for administrative approval. Tonight, he operates under my License and supervision. It’s an unexpected opportunity to supervise my Elmer :-)

Next: NBEMS Exercise w/Doug operating under my Amateur License

P.s…. Ooops RE: Don KJ7VGV. Sri about error Jaye will be NCS, we saw Don volunteer to be Western NCS and just learned b4 the net that Jaye is NCS.

Both of my 3D printers ended up breaking (in different ways) last week, finally got around to fixing them yesterday, you know me I can’t go
too long without 3D printing :).

Looking forward to the 20M net tomorrow, with Jaye doing west coast NCS I will get in on this one.

Propogation is not as great tonight as it has been last few weeks, surprised to see Jaye struggle to get the exercise!!!

73, see everyone next net! de N6FPV k

ORCA < WA7JYK – The Transcontinental Net last Wednesday was quite successful from my viewpoint. A lot of checkins from coast to coast.
Back channel coordination was provided by Zoom! Another round of testing will start tomorrow and Nov. 1. Hats off to Jaye KE6SLS for
stepping into the role of West Coast ncs for the net tomorrow. Thanks Jaye!

We finished up all outside fall prep chores today which included banking the roses. Good thing because lows are expected in the teens by the
end of the week. Seems kind of early and severe for this time of year.

Oregon Highway 204, otherwise known as the Tollgate/Spout Springs Highway between Elgin and Weston, was just reported as snow covered
and snowing via ODOT dispatch. This is a popular route from Wallowa County to Walla Walla. Snow tires for our Chevy go on Nov. 1st!

Thanks to Mindy and Doug for tonight’s net.

All is well. 73 de WA7JYK

With so much going wrong around the world, I would expect to see more
and more hams dialing in their NBEMS and other radio skills. However,
the last six weeks has revealed less ham activity on our normal training
nets. I was pleased to see see a good turn out on my HF Emergency
Digital Net Monday evening–TU to all who take the time to participate!

This station will be a RELAY station for the next upcoming 20m transcontinental
net tomorrow. I do hope the propagation will be as kind as it was
last week. Also good to see such an interest from over 80 different
stations!

The landscapers showed up tonight while the grass was dry! As we move
into normal winter, it’s going to be tough going for the crew to keep
the vegetation under control. Sure looks nice and glad they showed up
as we have rain tonight and tomorrow :)

Doug, it’s GOOD to be supervised! Bravo Mindy :) I hope I receive
heads-up from ARRL before my ticket expires! I also hope the FCC,
now that it requires more money, will FIX THEIR INTERFACE!

NCS TU for sending ex in MFSK64!

It’s getting colder down here now. I am not a fan of cold! :)

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

ORCA < WA7HHE, nice to have good propagation back, but we needed the challenge of getting our messages through during difficult times.
Getting many emails in my in-box requarding more Transcontental tests along with suggestions. Unfortunately my home remodling does not
provide enough time to read all of the. Appreciate NCS keeping us updated, should be fun to see what the tests evolve into.

Bight thanks to Doug and Mindy for their dedication and all of the training they have provided.

Heading out to cabin to work 20 meters tomorrow night for transcontinenal net but a storm is
showing up same time.Read a report from the Pentagon today 70% of our
armed forces are over weight and or obese. Nice to broadcast that at this time.

I have a question since I’ve gone to fldigi4.2.00 even though I lock the WF at 1500 it changes
w/o reason even if NCS sends 1500 I can get 1504. So I’m constantly changing back to 1500? Anyone
else seeing this?

Once upon a time I was on a VE team doing testing for new hams. We sent in a batch of tests only to have them held up by ARRL because
ONE of the examiner’s licenses (AE6LJ) had expired. All the would be new Hams had to wait until that dope managed to renew. Fortunately it
had only been a couple of months instead of years, so didn’t I need to retest. Only took about 7 days to get it squared away. Still, SOOOOOO

My Amateur Radio License awaits administrative action @ FCC website. I’ve completed the maze; I’ve no idea how long approval will take. I
can’t pay until this process completes. Meantime, I’m under Mindy’s License & supervision.

The net again ran like clockwork. It’s a pleasure working with each of you. ORCA/WDN Ops will be an asset to the 20m Transcontinental Net.
Tune in tomorrow if you can.

With 80m condx noticeably improving, DST looms on the horizon.
