ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes two new stations, Sean KK6QL in Los Angeles,CA, and Barry KJ7WHE in Nampa,ID. We ask all incoming stations to read our Quick-Start Guide @ http://orcadigitalnet.com/quick-start/ thoroughly and use Ck-In Macros available @ http://orcadigitalnet.com/macros/. Please learn the NBEMS Exercise by working silently as a Monitoring station (QNX) before checking-in Active. Check your NBEMS Exercise work in the after-net Monitor’s Session. If you would like email notice when the weekly Net Report is published, email: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

It was another night of tough 80m condx. One way propagation is becoming routine. Again this evening, we didn’t log stations east of Utah. Winter condx are usually better on 80m than Summer, but this distinction seems to be fading.

Tom WB7EUX’s comments about running two macro sets and switching them instantly with the <MACROS> Tag were music to our ears. He also reorganized Buttons into logical groups. Our enthusiasm for Macros stems from long experience with Macros in digital operations. We often switch between two sets of ORCA Macros every session. Doug conducts NBEMS Exercises w/o keyboard input; he uses only Macros and pencil/paper to log who needs which Blocks. We couldn’t run ORCA as it is w/o Macros.

Another ORCA Protocol reminder relates to TxID and Pre-Tone. TxID should be disabled for nets unless you’re changing Mode in the Traffic or Comment Round. Only NCS runs with TxID active. Same for Pre-Signal Tone. We never use the FLDIGI Pre-Signal Tone feature. First, you can’t hold transmission when the frequency is busy. Content immediately follows Tone automatically. The other downside of Pre-Signal Tone is that the Tone is sent automatically every time you transmit. Pre-Tone should only be sent manually with the TUNE Button WHEN doubling is likely.

When NCS calls you directly, replying with Pre-Tone or the automated Pre-Signal Tone serves no purpose; it wastes time and bandwidth. Situational Awareness and Common Sense is your best guide here; send only what’s needed. Our goal is to be Brief and Concise.

We missed our net-length target of one hour tonight by a wide margin. 1hr 22min. We’ve been working toward shorter nets for a year now. We’ve succeeded in trimming quite a few minutes from the average net. Thanks for your help keeping the net brisk, brief, and  concise. We’re using our valuable time more efficiently.

Don KJ7VGV’s comments about having needed medications on hand for emergencies is worth repeating. He suggests refilling prescriptions 2 weeks early to accumulate spare medication over time. Some Doctors will authorize 90 day supplies. Although we’ve been focused on station sustainability, Operator sustainability is equally important. We need water, food, shelter, security, and sometimes medication. We Operators are the key component. These are stressful times. Maintaining good health requires focus and commitment.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight we have another Advanced NBEMS Exercise. There are 5 Tuesdays in May so next session, 31/May/22, will also have an Advanced Exercise.

Why do Advanced Exercises require changing ‘To’ in FLAMP from QST to a specific CALLSIGN? QST indicates Traffic for all stations.  Stations that don’t CONFIRM the file may then send Reports to Fill the file. When the file is addressed to NCS, everyone knows the traffic is intended for one station and only that Station Reports. Our Traffic Round completes the Advanced NBEMS Exercise; it’s not for actual Traffic.

Spring brings Daylight Saving Time, longer days, and warmer weather. Net participation usually declines a little in Summer. It’s normal.

Hats-Off to Lamar AE6LJ for taking NCS responsibilities when there was no Western Digital Net NCS. Steve K6ETA’s Work-from-Home agreement with his employer changed and he now commutes from Mt Shasta to the Bay Area weekly leaving Western Digital Net w/o NCS. So far, there’s no pre-arrangement for NCS, so it’s a pick-up game whenever Steve isn’t there. This setback is an opportunity for WDN members. When the regular NCS doesn’t arrange for replacement, it’s up to the members to sustain their net. Nets are closely identified with the Net Control Station, but they aren’t the real owners. The net is made up of participating members; w/o them, the net doesn’t exist. Maintaining the net is everyone’s responsibility.

Websites, Preambles, Protocols, etc, define and regulate nets, but the essence of every net is membership. W/o members, it’s only structure. Nets are comprised of people. W/o participating Ops there’s no net; members ARE the net. WDN, like ORCA, belongs to the members. When NCS is absent for any reason, members should take the net just as Lamar did. You don’t need to run it perfectly . Jump in and compile a Roster. That’s easy. After making a couple sessions, you’ll be ready to call the QST and Comment Round. Don’t worry about errors and omissions, you’re working w/friends and colleagues. Take a small risk and support your net. You’ll gain useful experience and deeper confidence.

NCS < WB7EUX – At 6:45PM my software could only decode the RxID of K7KY.
At 7:30PM K7KY came up to 0 to +2db with good copy. Pretty consistent spring/summer reception conditions.

After months of laziness I finally have cleaned up most of the macros and placed them in logical groups. Most used at the top so I can activate them with the “F” keys. Also I have a macro to switch over to WDN macros and vice-versa for ORCA. Great fun and very useful! Thanks to Doug K7KY for excellent examples on the ORCA web site.

Reading the net notes from last week. Another thing to consider in an emergency is how much medication do you have on hand? Many insurance companies will allow a 90 day supply instead of a 30 day supply. If that is available to you did you know you can reorder your prescription medications at least two +weeks ahead of the end of the 90 days. If you do this consistently you can end up having many months of extra medication supplies. Be sure to rotate you medications properly to not lose track of expiration dates. Finally if your pharmacy informs you it was too soon they will automatically fill them when allowed by your insurance company. Adjust your timing accordingly.

<0333Z> KJ7VGV BTN

Very good point, Don   I use ur reorder method and it works   slow but effective    addition to my store…   I didn’t think of medications as part of keeping stations on the air, but the Op is the most important component of all stations    tnx 4 that   BK Ron K7HDX, Ur next 4 Comments < K7KY

SHORTWAVE RADIOGRAM

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
