Poor band condx seem to be our lot lately and the bands may deteriorate further. Condx have been difficult for stations near NCS. We barely connect the stations 50mi north and 100mi south. Hat’s off to KD7CL, KA7PAT, KB6NN, & KE6SLS for sticking with it. In spite of these condx, we are connecting a dozen or so stations each week and passing traffic. Soon, we’ll be relay experts!

We’re about 100 months into solar cycle #24. That means that we’re past the maximum and headed toward a minimum and a new cycle sometime near 2020. This was an exceptionally weak solar cycle, very similar to those that occurred as part of the Dalton Minimum in the early 19th century. “None of us alive have ever seen such a weak cycle.”, Leif Svalgaard of Stanford University. Buckle up Ops, it may get worse.

We’re sending more images lately. They’re good for evaluating band condx. For some situations, an image might be more immediately useful than text. The recent versions of FLDIGI can send images in MFSK @ 2x & 4x from the TX buffer. I’ve not been able to get these features to work in the macro IMAGE tag. If you’re working with macros, fldigi v4.0.15 has trouble with macros; they may lock up fldigi. Earlier versions are OK, but not too early. It’s good to keep up with stable version releases. The Alpha version, 4.0.16.03 has the macro bugs sorted out.

Welcome to Daniel AE0DM who checked in from Clifton,CO as we were closing. Here’s some of tonight’s images:

ANNOUNCEMENTS 23 January 2018

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes ‘VideoID_macro2.b2s’. This VideoID
macro, suggested by Dave W1HKJ, is more efficient than my macro. It
remembers and restores mode & frequency.

The off-freq-traffic exercise planned for the 3rd week each month is
canceled. ORCA is already complex; long nets discourage participation.
Active check-ins are increasing. We don’t want reduce the time available
to practice traffic evolutions. Remember, passing traffic off the net
frequency is routine for Traffic and Emergency net. You can still practice off-freq-traffic. Let me know and we’ll do it next net.

Eric KG7UNI checked in last week from the Kanab,UT EOC. Now, he’s setting up his FT-991 at home and needs some configuration assistance. If you’re running an FT-991, he could use your input. Email me for his contact info.

Digital shorthand for RELAY:
“RELAY <callsign> <callsign> < <URcall>”.

Thanks fori ORCA members who checked me in via RELAY last week. NCS finally started coming into Eureka after 8pm.

ORCA de N6IET N6IET Rick in Los Angeles

I put my Icom IC-753 into retirement (storage).
Using Kenwood TS-590sg for the first time in digital mode.
New radio, new interface cable, new sound settings, etc.
Hey, this radio doesn’t drift! Yay!
I’m running 50 watts to a ‘sideways mobile’ antenna off my balcony.
No more AV-680 on the roof. Landlord made me take it down last summer.

Band sucks, this evening, but what else is new?

It has been many months since I last QNI ORCA. I have forgotten how to do this, I think.

Strong stations here include K7KY, KR7KR and WA7HHE.

Thanks for doing the net Doug and Mindy. 73 to all and to all a Good Night!
