Our net seems to get better each week. MFSK-32 was good for all traffic tonight and we likely could have used faster modes with most of the traffic. Everyone was copying very well. You are welcome to send your traffic in a mode you think will work well. We want to return MFSK-32 for net communications and also for FLAMP REPORTS. Some modes have more lag time than MFSK-32, so it saves time to use MFSK-32. It’s faster than I can type, anyway.

We had 4 messages in FLAMP tonight. I think our REPORT process needs another look. We used to send REPORTs w/o NCS prompt, but winter band and new Ops need further consideration. The REPORT feature would see most use in station- to-station traffic exchanges. REPORTing in a roundtable setting is different and takes more time. NCS prompting adds additional time, but can save a little time when Ops don’t respond. In winter band conditions, fading may drop a station suddenly and leave the net waiting for an Op who no longer hears us.

FLAMP is an important component; we want to incorporate it as smoothly as we can.  Your thought on the REPORT process are welcome.

And, welcome to Brad WA7HHE who joined us from Cedar City, UT and Dave K7DV in Idaho Falls, Idaho checked in just after net-close.   Tim K7TRP was back again and so was Bob W7GBB. You might remember that Tim is OREGON DIGITAL NET NCS.  They meet every Friday, 2000p/0400z, 3579 +1500, PSK31. Drop in and visit Tim when you can. Visiting the different digital nets is a good way to expand your digital traffic skills. Most have different net routines than ours and will expand your range of digital experience.

Visiting other digital nets fosters ties and relationships between digital nets and digital Ops.   In emergency situations we will be thankful for our regular practice and the nets and Operators we’ve worked.

Thanks for working with us and I hope you’ll be able to join us next week too. < K7KY

Announcements, 23/Feb/16

Jaye KE6SLS and I have been talking about alternate NCS.

Jaye may be able to so a little NCS work for us. I’ve been thinking of ways to retain our general net structure when we have more than average check-ins. I’d like to try splitting the net during traffic round, after sending bulletins, with half the members going down around 3.594 with Jaye to run the same traffic and comment rounds. We wouldn’t have to limit traffic transmissions.

Working with FLAMP and the REPORT & RELAY features takes a little more net time. Poor band condx means slower modes and longer TX time. Try to keep practice messages brief. We get more actual practice with short messages.

Try the FLDIGI macro that prints your callsign on the waterfall.

Instructions on the website Macro page.

Checking in late? Send your CALLSIGN during a lull or print it

nearby on the waterfall.         Leaving early? Please check-out.

:sb:27 Report on Saturday Exercise

:mg:2459 Report from Donald O. Nelson on Fortuna Fire earthquake exercise February 20th 2016.

There was major interference from Fortuna Fire’s VHF station. Amateur radio community needs to develop equipment and plan to use frequencies other than VHF when co-located in the same facility. As I understand, the antenna for the HAM station is very close to the fire station antenna. Other mitigation may be remounting antennas for least amount of interference and/or placing filters in the antenna system.

Digital capability needs to expand. Need to work with served agencies to develop local area networks or add to local area networks allowing served agencies to create their own messages and then deliver to Amateur radio station in computer/digital format and also to have the Amateur radio station be able to deliver messages to served agencies via local network/computer system. Very important for longer messages and messages with technical content. This will avoid transcription errors. When many messages are to be sent, this will also speed up communications as using voice requires retransmissions to fill in missing pieces. This requires a computer, radio interface and software at the Amateur radio station location as well as the software on the computers that are used to generate and receive messages. Software currently being used be the Amateur radio community is free of charge. The main obstacles may be with the local information technology people resistant to participate and radio operators trained in digital operations.

Above was my official report to Fortuna Fire. I have more information to add:

We started communications at 0810L on the Far West Repeater System.

Communications was between the HAM station located at Fortuna Fire station and my station at my house. My station was acting as Humboldt Emergency Operations Center. We switched to 146.52 MHz and tried to handle traffic from EOC to Fortuna Fire requesting an initial damage assessmen t. It took a few tries to get it through as the Fire Departments radio interfered withe he ‡2t station. We switched to the Fortuna HAM repeater 147.09 MHz and found we could maintain communications on this channel. Other trasa» eeane>C to Fortuna Fire was a broken gas main and if fire station 1 or 3 could provide a çl Iea temperary hospital. HAMs concluded our operations at 1046L. This was a p i|uY neat V liund eh|yises are valuable.

:sb:79 Lost NASA Tapes Unearthed: Astronauts Heard ‘Music’ on Far side of the Moon

:mg:989

When astronauts with the Apollo 10 mission traveled around the far side of the moon, they didn’t expect to hear anything on their radios. After all they

would be out of radio contact with Mission Control for over an hour. In fact, there’s no way any transmission from Earth could reach them during this brief

period of time. They did however, hear something really strange that day, which they likened to “music.”

Fortunately their conversations were recorded so NASA could exam them after they regained radio contact, but they were promptly classified and buried

for nearly 40 years, until they were released in 2008. The nature of the transmission has been debated since then, but no definitive conclusions have

been drawn.

Recently, the science channel released a documentary on the incident as part of their series “NASA’s Unexplained Files.”

fb ORCA and 1000% copy .. oops, 100% cp on all traffic tonight.   Amazing!

Don’s havin’ issues over at his place, but he since found the bug and squished it good!

Mindy is running an interesting OS me thinks.;.. Her traffic has inserte3d stuff and then human readable after that, however, once flmsg and firefox pop

up, the interesting stuff is not there! I think it is a fonts issue with fldigi. Very interesting ,, the nice thing is that once the reports come up they are 100%

and that is the magic of code and hackers the world over, thnk you!

So good work all around. I enjoyed copy the doubles here too.

K7KY de KB6HOH OK Doug! Hey Tnx for the Relays. I see KE6SLS sent the same file I did but I did it on the Mt Diablo 220 Repeater. Infact I sent the

entire Bulletin but had to break it into 2 parts. I am trying to get them to adopt FLamp for VHF/UHF ops as well. I like the timer settings for how long to TX

and how long to RX so they dont time out the Repeater. Anyway I back on the 80m Inverted Vee and the IC-7000. Im hoping maybe sometime next week

to get the 7000 sent off for repair. I lost the VHF TX Output but must be running of a Driver or PreDriver because I can hit 2 repeaters. One locally of

course and one across the Bay. Anyway how you Folks doing up there this PM. Beautiful WX today and almosy spring like Cdx’s.

  1. Don and I are on 2m now too, but anyway, I had a thought, if you are up to it, is to send the ORCA image as a file in FLamp say mfsk64.   Can you

load that up and see how long it would take in say 128 blocks?
