Even with miserable band condx we set an ORCA record tonight. We don’t recall a Roster when 50% of Ck-Ins participated in the NBEMS Exercise. Our initial Roster was 18 Ops; 2 more joined us later. We’re on a solar cycle upstroke, but it’s hard to notice any improvement. We’re also contending with longer Summer days. We’re well into the net before west-coast nightfall. Still, these are the condx we practice for. Working in these condx will have us comfortable and relaxed when band condx are favorable. Meantime, we’re honing our Relay and mode-choice skills.

Band condx again foiled our plan for two Ops to send the Path Evaluation Macro before Comments. We removed ending ORCAtest image tonight. For simplicity, we’re skipping posting the opening ORCAtest image to the Net Log.

ORCA DIGITAL NET and Western Digital Net have different Relay needs. ORCA, a Training net, Relays stations for the Roster, but not for participation in net events. There isn’t enough net-time to relay stations for NBEMS Exercises as we did years ago when Rosters were smaller. Today, we try to keep ORCA nets to <1hr. We occasionally have FLAMP Relay opportunities in the NBEMS Exercise. WDN, a Traffic net, must Relay stations holding traffic.

Did you see the news about Senators being issued Gov’t funded Satellite Phones in preparation for communications-down events? We’re not wasting our time practicing digital traffic-handling. We could be called to action this Summer with little notice other than occasional clues like Satellite Phones for Senators. Harden your station and polish your skills. Summer may get hot in multiple ways. Semper Paratus.

Thanks again to Jaye KE6SlS for Elmer assistance during the Monitor’s Session. Jaye has been working with April W7ANC in Goldendale,WA. April is coming up to speed quickly. We log YL’s occasionally, but most are QNX, uninterested in regular practice. No aspersions on them; we all have busy lives these days. April seems like she might just be the 1st YL to stick around. We once thought having OM/YL NCS might result in more YL Ck-Ins.

Most stations Aced the NBEMS Exercise. There’s more to these Exercises than is initially obvious. The routines and conventions of digital traffic-handling with NBEMS software is the foundation. Additional practice is provided in situational awareness and reading comprehension. Remaining focused on net-flow and NCS enables you to respond quickly when NCS calls. To implement written instructions, you must interpret them correctly. All three practice areas require focus and attention. The more we practice, the better we’re likely to perform.

Keep these nets in mind; they’re conducted by ORCA Colleagues. 4 digital nets, M-Thurs on 3.581mhz, our Western-US digital watering-hole, and one Winlink net:

Monday, Humboldt County Emergency Digital Net, 1845p/0245z, 3.581+1500, MFSK-32, KE6SLS/NCS (regional)

Tuesday, ORCA DIGITAL NET, 1930p/0230z, 3.581+1500, MFSK-32, K7KY & W7ZAP/NCS, http://orcadigitalnet.com/ (W/USA)

Wednesday, NA ID ERC Digital Net, 1800m/0200z, 3.581+1500, MFSK-32, K7DV/NetMgr (regional)

Wednesday, HUMCO Winlink Wednesday Net, Matthew KN7CEI/NCS, Message KN6CEI w/CALL,NAME,QTH, https://humboldtwinlinkwednesday.net/

Thursday, Western Digital Net, 1930p/0230z, 3.581+1500, MFSK-32, K6ETA,KE6SLS,KJ7VGV/NCS, http://westerndigitalnet.org/ (W/USA)

Thanks for taking time to practice with us tonight. We appreciate your participation and support. We hope to see you again next Tuesday evening.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

For tonight’s NBEMS Exercise, imagine that you, as NCS, receive notice that WX changes put new communities in
jeopardy. You want to share this info with all stations by plain-text QST. Use FLMSG or any Text Editor to produce a
Plain Text (.txt) file.  If you use FLMSG, output the file as Plain Text via View Menu.

Tonight, Dennis W6DKW & Ken KR7KR will send the Path Evaluation Macro just prior to Comment Round. Please email
these two images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com, for publication in the Net Report.  We’ll learn something about paths
between net stations.

If you worked Western Digital Net last Thursday, this topic will be familiar. Band condx were unfavorable and Ck-In was
difficult. Relays were required and Don KJ7VGV was the man of the hour, and he wasn’t alone. Compounding difficult
band condx were stations sending their Ck-In string ‘into the ether’.  Sending blind like this makes doubles nearly
inevitable. Tough band condx are opportunities to extend our situational awareness. Think gestalt; what else is probably
occurring on 3.581 right now? Might I be doubling stations I don’t copy? Pause 2 Think B4 TX.É 1Ån

Tough band tonight. Changed from MFSK-32 to 22 because of condx.

Here’s the breakdown of RX by modes:
PSK-500R: 2 stns
THOR-50×1: 1 stn
MFSK-22: 2 stns

$ stns did not CONFIRM. If you want to get a fill, ck-in to the MONITOR’S Sesion.

BTN < W7ZAP

t”uuk³ vf©   oc eii titoÝåL fqtsitstasUetTnx Mindy    really a tough band nite.     Oddly, half tonight’s ck-ins were Active
9/18      and some were very hard to fill.  We can try agn to fill those stations in the Monitor’s Session.    BK

Put a new (old) radio i the truck last week, only to discover electric noise was hammering my TX signal, whipped up an
LC filter with some caps and toroids I had sitting around in my parts collection (I do EE work so always have tons of
parts around), got rid of 99% of the electrical noise (still a little bit of hum in there, but not too bad).  pic of filter

Today, Guam and surrounding islands are being hammered by massive
typhoon.  I will guess some of the lightning crashes are coming from
that storm, as well as storms all over the north america.

We had another reminder of shaky ground this weekend with a 5.5 quake.
This time, 100km off shore!

I am really surprised to report a P5 cpy on beginning image, with the
lightning crashes!  If you look carefully, you will see when each
crash hit during the copy.

Note to all ops.  Is your attenuator active?  Is your RF gain reduced?
They should be to help your radio handle noise and improve S/N.

Training opportunity:  Utah stations needed following blks:
station a: 2  station b: 5 station c: 1,2,3  station d: 4
IF we asked station a to trx 1,3,4 and station b to rtx 2, ALL UTAH
ops would have full cpy.

With sunshine comes WIND.  High winds all day today.  It’s still
blowing pretty good outside, just seen another 18MPH gust. 🙁

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

I’m afraid this is starting to look like the new normal for HF band conditions. Feeling lucky if there isn’t a total black-out
these days. Had zippo copy on Brad WA7HHE at check-in tonight. Wow! Impressive ratio of Active to QNX-ers on the
roster, however.

Got my sweaty little hands on a new FT5D today and have been having too much fun exploring what it’ll do. Bought it
mostly for the APRS it offers in a hand held.

Relieved I seem to have counted sentences correctly for once this time. There IS hope for me yet!

Thanks much for the net. 73 to all of you.

Amateur Radio as similar to working for USCG or being a firefighter   but a bit easier   73 Jaye     < K7KYdA5½
