I miss the days when everyone on the net could copy every other station. Now, I’m happy when they can copy NCS.  I’m still running the net from a thumbdrive in a Toughbook tablet. It works fine now that I understand the process. FLDIGI runs from, and stores data on, the thumbdrive. I still hope to recover the data from the tablet HD that suffered a lightning surge last month.

The FLAMP exercise was interesting tonight.  Beginning in MFSK-128, only one of nine stations CONFIRMED. Some stations copied nothing at all. Greg KG7DMI in Carson City,NV CONFIRMED it on the first pass. Doug KA7FOO, also in NV, copied nothing. The band can be a strange and unpredictable medium sometimes. MFSK-64 & 32 completed the exercise. Thanks to Greg for relaying fills in MFSK-32.

Speaking of fill RELAYs, did you notice that after Greg’s RELAY, Doug said the Preamble wasn’t sent. I didn’t notice at the time, but the log verifies Doug’s observation. How can this be? When you use FETCH before RELAY, FLAMP collects all the blocks needed by every reporting station and lists them in the ‘Blocks’ window. In this case, no station reported missing the Preamble. Stations missing everything reported by keyboard and not with the REPORT feature. So, FLDIGI didn’t add the Preamble (block 0) to FETCH, and didn’t send block 0. Block 0 is the file header; it manages file transmission. To send the entire file, no matter what FLAMP has collected, you should leave the missing-block window blank. Now, FLAMP will send the complete file.

We configure FLAMP to always send the Preamble twice. This works when you’re the original sender, but does not effect RELAY. To RELAY the Preamble, you need a zero (0) in the missing-block window. To RELAY the Preamble twice, enter ‘0,0’ in the Block window.

Occasionally, someone suggests we send these exercise messages multiple times at once to better insure each station completes the file quickly.  This is routine on some digital nets, but ORCA’s agenda is different. Although we are very conscious of net time, saving time is secondary to providing maximum opportunities to use all the advanced FLAMP features and and engage with NCS. We want to enable as many Ops as possible to use all the traffic-handling features in the NBEMS apps. Sending once per mode and completing the file with FETCH and RELAY gives a more comprehensive learning experience. Practicing these evolutions now will build skill and confidence in processing numerous digital files quickly.

We had a nice QSO with Rick K0KEX in Smithville,MO after closing. We reduced power to 5w and continued our conversation. When we signed, Ken KR7KR came on to say he copied both of us well and was at 5w too.  When the band is working for us, it’s sometimes surprising.  We’ve not done much QRP lately; solar minimum is not friendly for QRP.

We’re thinking to also send the Signal Evaluation image near the end of the net to compare condx between beginning and end.  We’re interested in your thoughts on this idea. Thanks for practicing with us again tonight.  We really enjoy working with you. We’ve learned so much about digital NCS in the past six years, thanks to you. Let’s do it again next Tuesday evening.  73 Doug K7KY

BREAK

ANNOUNCEMENTS 23/April/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file ‘ex115.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/
FLAMP exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file
to NCS in the Traffic round tonight or any net.

This exercise is similar to last week. We’ll simulate receiving a keyboard
report you want to forward to Incident Command. You need to put this report
into an FLMSG form. To accomplish this, you will scroll up in the RX buffer
to the ‘Preamble’, copy text as directed, and paste it into an FLMSG form.

Ken Standard AD5XJ, NCS @ Int’l SATERN Digital Net, proposes a ‘Post-Office
or Store&Forward’ addition to the NBEMS suite. The concept has enough merit
to engage the interest of FLDIGI developer, Dave Freese W1HKJ. You can track
this proposal at the NBEMS forum @ groups.io

A computer crash has wiped our Net Report mailing list. We used an old list
last week, but most new members are not on it. We’re trying to rebuild the
list now. If you’re not receiving the Net Report posting, please contact us.

ORCA Net< WA7HHE, Fun exercise, really had me hopping, post Easter Egg Hunt, trying to find the word “Lock”:) Then copied the info and pasted into FLMSG. When saving my file I had some garbage on the end of the file and when dragging and dropping into FLAMP, FLAMP went poof. Corrected end file garbage but missed turning my call sign into a swear word Hi Hi. Fun net tonight hope everyone having as much fun as I am. 73’s Brad WA7HHE

Well, Brad we’re having fun at this end (-: we thought this exercise would be more difficult mostly because it can be difficult 4 us sometimes it’s hard to highlight anything in the RX buffer when someone transmits the cursor jumps all over nice work on the roll back & paste

I am very impressed with how good the ops worked this evenings net! I think the winter hours might be nearing an end .. will be evaluating the bands next few weeks. Sorry to hear about the loss of Data on the server NCS. What a PITA. .

On FLAMP reports, would be nice if NCS would send next stn call at least twice, sometimes fldigi doesn’t start full copy right away following the TXID.

Temp here today reached 69 Deg F! Bought a folding recliner camp chair so I can start enjoying some of these warmer evenings OUTSIDE!

I also want to remind all that with Linux, you can use the FILE:Capture tx to a seperate window which makes a copy/paste very easy.

I think the Gremlins were in force this evening.
73 all,
Jaye ke6sls

excellent report, Jaye every Op is interested in how well the signal get out and I certainly agree with you about the quality of this crew… amazing sometimes

K7KY < K6QOG You are making these exercises more difficult but that is the name of the game and I need this. Thanks. Have a good week. 73. Bill

RR Bill we’re giving you guys a small taste of what it’s like @ this end sometimes.. we often scroll up the RX buffer for info and it’s often difficult to do when theres lots of traffic… these little extras are the things we’ll be doing when we’re processing traffic tnx for your support and interest it’s you regular Ops that make this net useful and interesting

Interesting excercise tonight! Had to look for the paragraph! Band conditions were quite variable, but NCS was readable. S/N started at around -4 and got better the later it got (plus 8).

This is the last week of our semester! Looking forward to summer and having time to play with radios! I just got a new power backup setup here in the shack. I got a battery backup module that charges a lead acid battery and will automatic ally swap to the battery on a power failure!

Have a great week!

Also had a visit from my son and his family
Had 4 generations together at the same time

Good evening to all,
Didn’t copy some stations at check-in, but by traffic I copied all files 100% Except K7DV, missed one block. I thought Jaye’s KE6SLS idea to change to a faster mode for traffic was a good one.

Don’t know why my radio stops transmitting before the end of the file. That’s twice its done that. Once is a fluke, twice is a pattern. I’ll look into that. And I’m also having fun. Good group, good net, good fun!
de KG7DMI k

Greg maybe the timer in FLDIGI? On ORCA, ur welcome to change mode for your comments or Traffic when you chose a mode u thinkthe band will support.. when u do, remember to activate TxID or we wont’ read u tnx

Thanks to Greg KG7DMI for the relay during the FLAMP exe. Tougher band condx with geomagnetic activety being QUIET. I prefer UNSETTLED. Good job to all on the FLAMP exercise. Net had us on our toes on this end… good to be challenged with unexpected issues. Greg’s FLAMP TX 1st half of file is odd… not sure what’s up with that.

Enjoy working with you all and hope to see you on the WF again soon!
