Welcome to three first time ck-ins: Mark K7MEE in Priest River,ID, Claude K8MPW in Wendell,ID, & Eric KK7APK in Coos Bay,OR. We don’t often have three first-time ck-ins. We hope the net meets their interest and they join us regularly.  We’ll ask them to ck-in QNX a few sessions to learn net operations. See our website: http://orcadigitalnet.com. Email us if you would like email notice when the Net Report is published. Net Reports are always available on the ‘Net Reports’ page.

Tonight we wrapped the main net in 1hr/4min. That’s remarkable for an evening with 36 check-ins and an Advanced Exercise w/Traffic Round. Hats-Off to the ORCA team! We’ve been working to reduce net length without curtailing practice and content. Thanks for your assistance in running an efficient digital net.

A big factor in operational improvements is net efficiency. We operate efficiently because everyone knows and follows net protocol. Some HF digital nets still switch between Phone and Data modes. We realized early-on that this practice is inefficient. The solution was simple.  Implement ARRL’s Directed Net Protocols and digital-doubles are significantly reduced. When everyone follows protocol, digital nets can be brisk and efficient.

When we introduced Pre-Toning, digital-doubles were reduced even further. Today, we have very few doubles; most doubles today are due to band condx and occasional Op Error. We’re packing a lot of practice into our nets. Tonight we logged 36 stations and ran an Advanced NBEMS Exercise w/Traffic Round for eight Ops in a tick over an hour. Nice work all!

Our steady improvement to net efficiency results from numerous small adjustments. Members work the net w/TxID off and Pre-Signal Tone disabled. We use CW shorthand and communicate in brief and concise transmissions. We follow net format closely so incoming stations can quickly learn net operations. Net format remains constant while content varies. Everyone know what comes next. Net members are focused and self-correcting. We spend very little net time repeating basic protocol instructions.

Over the years, there’s been an interesting change to ORCA membership. Years back, it was unusual for members to ask how or why we do something. Incoming Ops seem more curious; we’re often engaged with penetrating questions. Now, we get questions regarding protocol compliance. They’re paying attention to how others work the net. They note that some members work the net with TxID and Pre-Signal-Tone active. They wonder why some ignore ck-in protocol. Good questions. We don’t know; we don’t address every error. We do address repeated errors. It’s a training net. We too make mistakes.

It’s refreshing to have observant members. We appreciate their questions and observations. One Op recently noted some discrepancies between the website and ck-in protocol. This is helpful; a small change to net operations may require changing multiple website pages.

Our exploration of Macros is going nicely. We’re leaving the shallow end of the pool now to develop more macro knowledge and depth. Two weeks from today, 08/Mar/22, we’ll send the Test image and our Comments in one transmission. You can choose the method.

“Last week, we experimented with the Path Evaluation Macro. We’ll use the Path Macro again in two weeks, 08/Mar/22, when you will send ORCAtest.jpg with the Path Macro and your Comments in a single transmission. We’re learning to combine keyboard w/macro, and macro w/macro, in a single seamless transmission. We’re also learning to see our macros as configurable tools. They are easily re-purposed; it’s often simpler to revise a macro instead of building from scratch.  With practice, they can be revised on-the-fly.

To send Comment-Text and ORCAtest.jpg in one transmission, type or Paste your comments into the TX window. Click TX/RX Button first, then click the Path Evaluation Macro. Text will print first, followed by the image. After sending the image, the Path Macro will close w/your CALLSIGN and end transmission.

This Exercise can also be done with two macros, the Comment Macro and Path Evaluation Macro (see: website Macro page). You can send Image and Text in one transmission by clicking either Macro first followed by the other. For the Macro you start with, remove  closing ID & <RX Tag so the transmitter remains on for the 2nd macro. Using 2 macros that usually stand alone, you need to revise beginning/end IDs in both Macros.

The Exercise entails sending image and comments in one transmission with normal ID at beginning and end, ie: ‘ORCA < URCALL’ &     ‘< URCALL’. There are numerous ways to accomplish this exercise. Experiment. Some configurations have unanticipated results. Try for the most efficient results w/minimal coding. Perfect your macros w/radio off. Test on-air with colleagues b4 net. Save these instructions and prepare for: 08/Mar/22.”

ANNOUNCEMENTS

We still have very high BG noise; the longer antenna @ 35over9 & the other @ 20over9. Coos Curry Elec’ Coop is looking into their equipment, maybe today, but more likely next week. We will need more Relay assistance than usual. Thanks for your help.

The 1st, 2nd & 3rd Tuesdays are BASIC NBEMS Exercise sessions. The 4th, and periodic 5th Tuesdays are Advanced NBEMS Exercise sessions. Tonight’s Advanced NBEMS Exercise includes the FLMSG Radiogram and a Traffic Round. Monitoring (QNX) stations can Fill or CONFIRM Exercise files in the after-net Monitor’s Session.

Pay close attention to Copy/Paste instructions. Send only what’s indicated.

Last week, we experimented with the Path Evaluation Macro. With a little practice, they can be revised on-the-fly.

Save these instructions and prepare for: 08/Mar/22.

In last week’s Comment Round, Jaye KE6SLS asked for help configuring the Path Evaluation Macro for his RaspberryPi 4/4 OS. Next-day email from Don KJ7VGV had the solution. On rare occasion, even Jaye needs input; he’s usually the Elmer. ORCA DIGITAL NET, Western Digital Net, and Humboldt Digital Emergency Net are good places to ask technical questions. There’s a wealth of Amateur/Digital experience on these nets. Don’t hesitate to ask questions.

We’re using my antenna tonight until we can fix whatever is bothering Doug’s antenna. Tnx for the early emails of RXed test images… they give me a good indication of ur copy with our #2 antenna

Woke up this morning to 33 degrees outside and a light dusting of snow. Huh, just when I had given up on any winter in 2022 and begun to work on my suntan instead…

Found myself off 1500 WF during the OFDM-500 pass(?).

Thanks Mindy and Doug. The advanced exercise makes for a really exciting net. I feel for you on that noise problem.

Hard to say what happened on the OFDM pass… I didnt copy Doug’s TxID at all. I wasnt sure if everyone else did… but they did.

We received .18″ of rain today, which brought THIS YEARS total rainfall
to .70″ of rain.  Whew, this could be the worst year yet for drought,
water restrictions, and fire hazard.

Tonight we brace for deep freeze warnings with temps down to the 20s here on the coast.  So far, we didn’t get the expected wind, but I am sure it’s on the way which makes the dryness even worse :|  So toss another log on the fire tonight.

Not taking NVIS for granted tonight, but so far, heard all stations, with NCS dipping some as net gets started.

Sounds like you KX3 might be VERY helpful tracking down the noise source haunting your QTH.  Sure hope you can find & squish it asap.

Good ex tonight.  Keeps us THINKING and that is a VERY GOOD THING

Temp now at 38 and falling . . . “|

Great seeing all the sigs on the WF tonight.

Stay well, keep the peace, and look for you all again soon.

ORCA < K7KY
ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes K7MEE in Priest River,ID, Claude K8MPW in Wendell,ID, & Eric KK7APK in Coos Bay,OR.  Drop us email if you would like email notice when the Net Report is published. ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

We’ll add the instructions (from Announcements)for the next Path Evaluation Macro exercise to the Net Report too.

Our RFI issue is weird.  We’ve stopped some of it and Mindy’s antenna is quiet, but mine is still 10over9.  We’ve been spoiled here with 30yrs of no BG noise.

Years ago, we thought ORCA would wrap up around 7yrs, but no. Today, it’s bigger than ever w/no end in sight. Thanks for your participation and support. We really enjoy working with you. < Doug K7KY

Nice comments Doug… we hv to do some ant juggling to both TX these days!

FB Steve… need anything else? < W7ZAP  eACnewwm tnthefërth wind here.

The band is not very good here tonite.
Was not able to copy some of the ops that I normal could copy
during ck-in.  Had to use your ack as my relay hihi
Was late getting from the Idaho ARES net so I missed some of
the op ck-ins.  I logged 31, 4 were new to my database.

Did not receive Signal eval at start of net.
End of net signal eval image not worth sending hihi

Love the ORCA net.  I have a lot of fun learning and trying new
projects.  Good thing I have a large dumby load to practice into.

<de N7SDC

That’s great comments Steve. U might not copy me/us as well on my antenna. Band is whatever it is tonight… up/down. Glad ur practicing what u are and enjoying it! Good to work w/u and hope to cu on the WF agn soon!
