23 stations on the Roster w/nine working the NBEMS Exercise. The net flowed efficiently tonight. Thanks to everyone for focus and attention. We’ve become very Mode agile. We change mode often during Exercise/Traffic and Comments. We don’t make additional transmissions for Mode change. We rely on FLDIGI’s built-in tools, TxID & RxID to change Mode automatically. Regular practice develops Mode agility. Nice work all around.

Dane in Seabeck, Washington relinquished W7LOA for 2×2 CALL, AI7TB. It’s CW friendly. It may take us a couple sessions to realize it’s not a new station. Good to hear from Dave K7DV in Idaho Falls, Idaho. We’ve been missing Dave. He’s developed a challenging health issue; please keep Dave & his XYL Wanda N7FWT in your thoughts & prayers. Dave is the only stand-in to call ORCA DIGITAL NET. He ran ORCA twice when we were ill circa 2016. 1st week, Christine AF7OK assisted Dave; the 2nd week he was on his own. Thanks again, Dave!

That’s it for this Net Report. Curry County issued a Red Flag alert for incoming wind/lightning storm. We’re preparing for potential sudden evacuation orders. Fires to our North & South are still uncontained and moving, but nearby lightning strikes have potential for rapid wildfire development. We’re busy.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The NBEMS Exercise this evening features the FLMSG Blank form. The question is derived from our previous experiments with the
Macro Parser. Exercise questions simulate message content and occasionally reinforce previous learning. Our main focus is NBEMS
traffic-handling routines and tactics.

Links to Amateur Emergency communications in Hawaii:
https://tinyurl.com/ejjmmsxp
https://tinyurl.com/3hp3fs9e

Brad WA7HHE, Ken KR7KR, & Doug K7KY experimented with THOR-32, 44, & 56 last Thursday following Western Digital Net. Results
were encouraging. Brad copied Doug OK, but not the other way around. Ken & Doug did well with all three modes. Doug had an odd
anomaly with TxID. When Ken sent THOR-56 TxID, Doug’s station switched to THROB-1, 3 of 4 times. Once it switched correctly.
This may be a one-off event. The new THOR modes did well in difficult condx. We’ll run a THOR/MFSK Mode Shoot-Out when Dave
W1HKJ releases stable NBEMS suite versions.

Working w/Macros last year we learned we can’t use a Macro to send text files that contain Macro Tags. We send files by Macro with
the <FILE> Tag. This ANNOUNCEMENET file is an example. If we use the ‘ANNOUNCEMENT’ Macro button to send announce.txt,
the Macro Parser will attempt to execute the <FILE> Tag in the text. Usually, this results in a blank instead of the Tag. Other times,
the Parser may choke and end transmission. Files containing Macro Tags can be sent in FLMSG or Copy/Pasted in TX buffer.

If ORCA operations seem a little thin lately, it’s due to our time constraints; we’ve less time for radio. The confluence of aging,
homestead chores & maintenance, threatening wildfires, and family responsibilities absorb radio time. We’re trying to keep our balance.

Currently, Don KJ7VGV & Bruno KG7VVN conduct the weekly NBMES Exercise on 1st Tuesdays. We’d like to extend this opportunity
to two more Ops so 1st Tuesday Exercises would all be by guest/NCS. Conducting NBEMS Exercises isn’t difficult; it just takes a little
learning & practice. No new apps to learn; you’re already familiar with FLDIGI, FLMSG, & FLAMP. We’ll help you come up to speed.

Next is an NBEMS traffic-handling Exercise w/Mindy W7ZAP < K7KYaCw¢Pi ·eetl P!

House painting was finally completed Sunday afternoon. I’m VERY glad that is over.

Next project: Pave a portion of our driveway in early September.

A lightning strike occurred and a forest fire started just above the main campground at Wallowa Lake on Chief Joseph Mtn Friday
early in the evening. That’s six miles south of this ham shack. The fire was not accessible via road and was situated in steep
terrain. As luck would have it several heavy lifters were on site at the Joseph airport for maintenance. One of them lifted off, sucked
water out of Wallowa Lake, and promptly put the fire out from the air. Talk about serendipity!

All is well. 73 de WA7JYK

Fire, fire, fire, and more fire on the Pacific northwest!  Some of the
fires are finally seeing some containment, yet one has just exploded
in size, 40,000 at last look.

Our fair grounds just up the road from my QTH is now one of the fire
camps.  Over the weekend the sound of copters landing & taking off
during daylight hours.  Past two days, haven’t heard any.

Today is first day of AIR here in Eureka.  The wind has shifted and
we finally got some clean air and clear skies.  What a treat.  I feel
for those further north, esp near the Smith River Complex fire!

If you haven’t checked it out yet.  Go to “Watch Duty” on your phone
or computer and look at northern CA. . .

Fritz, my #1 puss went into surgery yesterday AM.  I brought him home
about 3pm and put the cone on.  He did not respond well to it, even
with the sedatives.  Had a rotten night, very little sleep (I am just
wiped out), and this morning, discovered cone full of slobber and
grime.  Today, finally located a “recovery suit” which is basically a
ONESIE you might see a new born infant in, but made for cat with cat
tail.  He is doing better.  Love my little buggers fierce and it’s
rotten seeing him so uncomfortable.  We’ll be back to vets Monday for
recheck and new meds to treat his mouth.  Hopefully that will give
him a real break.  Smokiepuss has been great, but since I can’t let
them out, he’s been buggering me hourly–just to keep fresh how
unsatisfied he is not getting to go out and play!

Lightning strikes are certainly taking it’s toll on FLA ex.  The
strikes increasing as we move into comment round!  Uhggggg. 🙁

Somehow, I CLOSED “comments.txt” by mistake.  Glad I click that SAVE
button often!  No loss of data. 😄

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!
