We’ve not had many nets like tonight. Early Ck-In was more intense than usual. We’re starting 15min earlier now, but not everyone realizes it yet. A 29 Op Roster isn’t really large, but sometimes they call in groups. We’re copy/pasting between FLDIGI & FLMSG to compile the Roster. Mindy also keeps a written Log. The last few weeks, we’ve been transitioning from Win8.1 to Linux Mint 21.1. It’s been up & down. Doug worked WDN last week w/his Linux tablet and thought he was good-2-go for ORCA tonight. All was well until the NBEMS Exercise when the tablet suddenly refused to TX.

We switched roles and the net flowed as usual. 10yrs of practice really pays! We switched roles in a few moments. This is only the 2nd time we’ve had to switch up quickly. Mid last year, we ceased practicing before nets; we do make a few more errors, but nothing serious so far. We wrapped the net in 1hr/5min, but the Monitor’s Session ran another 2hr. Whew! Lots of thinking and typing.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Alan KA7SEZ in Beaver,UT. It’s good to have another Utah station. Something in the Utah air fosters digital Ops, it seems. Utah Ops have been an ORCA mainstay. Most are concentrated in Cedar City.

The Active stations included their Ck-In Macro with Comments tonight. They all have good Ck-In Macros. No surprise. The exercise was more about sending files that contain Macro Tags. Mindy forgot and sent Announcement by Macro (<FILE>) and the Tag printed w/o issue. So, it may depend on which Tags are used. Until we know more, we’ll continue sending files w/Tags by other methods.

Thanks so much for your appreciative comments about the net. We appreciate you and we enjoy working w/you. Without your participation and support, we wouldn’t be a network. We once thought ORCA would time out around 7yrs, but no. It’s still viable and relevant. Being a pick-up net, people come and go regularly. Some practice until they feel competent, others continue to polish their digital traffic-handling skills. We’re learning too. Learning is endless. That’s a good thing. Bob Dylan once said, ‘Those not busy being born, are busy dying’.

Monitor’s Session was the longest by far; 2hrs. Our priority for Monitors is Filling or CONFIRMING the NBEMS Exercise file or Confirming their homework file. After that, we’re here to answer questions and help with digital issues. We usually ask those with questions or needing assistance to stand-by while we Fill and CONFIRM files for those waiting. Then we circle back to answer questions or resolve issues. 5 Ops were engaged. 7 Ops is the Monitor’s Session record.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Our NBEMS traffic-handling Exercise for this evening features the FLMSG ICS-309 form. We’ll again work with Macros in the Comment Round.

We’re transmitting files that contain Macro Tags. Here there are pitfalls not covered in the User Manual. Please include with your comments your actual ORCA Ck-In Macro in Text form. Don’t execute the Macro;
copy/paste it into the TX buffer before your comments. Remember, we can’t include Macro Tags in a file called by a Macro. Our Comment Macro, powered by the Tag, is an example. Once we engage the Macro Parser, it attempts to execute every Tag.

Just prior to the Comment Round, Rick K7UK will send the Path Evaluation Macro from Omak,WA. Please include his image with the beginning/end ORCAtest images you usually email: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com. We’ll publish the results.
Last Tuesday, a Monitoring Op noticed a number of ORCA stations were off frequency. Most just 3-4hz, some further, and one 16hz off-frequency. Those stations were probably not LOCKED @ 1500wf. Modern Amateur radios are unlikely to vary much more than a hertz or so. 16hz deviation is about MFSK-32’s off-freq capacity in good band condx. Poor condx diminish that window. Our Ck-In Macros include Tags that set and Lock the Cursor at 1500wf. Whether you use ORCA Ck-In Macros or your own, it’s important to be on frequency.

Speaking of station configuration, we recently learned that we aren’t using the WF SIG screen adjustments correctly. Emery KE7YX sent us an FLDIGI User Manual 4.1.24 image that intuitively displays the Audio path from soundcard to FLDIGI components. This graphic isn’t in earlier Manuals. We realized we’ve been using the adjustments made in SIG screen incorrectly; they don’t effect the decoder.

“Setting the correct hardware, operating system, and fldigi received audio levels is not difficult, but it is the one setup procedure most often done incorrectly. … Signal decoding and signal display are two separate software processing paths” FLDIGI User Manual 4.1.24, RX/TX Audio Levels, Receive Audio.

Already another eulogy! Our friend and colleague Craig Lundborg KD7CL passed away last Tuesday, 14/Mar/23. Craig and his wife Malinda just moved into their new home in Quartzite,AZ.

Craig’s company got the job to earthquake retrofit Candlestick Park in 1989. While the deadline was later in the year, they completed the job before the Loma Prieta Earthquake which struck when the stadium was filled with 63,000 people for the World Series. If his crew had not finished the job early, the stadium may have fallen.

Two weeks ago, Craig erected his HF antenna and checked into ORCA. It’s a deep heartfelt loss for us: Craig was ARES EC in adjacent Coos County before moving to Arizona. He was our digital contact there; he expanded digital operations in Coos Co. We live in Curry County where ARES is verboten, but Craig always included us in Coos Co ARES events. Craig was a dynamic ARES Emergency Coordinator and Elmer. He will be missed by family, friends, and colleagues.

Please join us in a few moments of silence for our friend, Craig KD7CL SK …

4.7m quake today, around 4pm. Short yet it caused me to to brace for impact. The is “NO getting use to” with regards to Earth quakes.

Eureka is officially about 5″ of rain over the “normal” yearly average, and it looks like we have a weak system that will rain on us for this entire week. Still looking for signs of spring here!

My Raspberry pi developed a problem and no longer has audio. I think this came from an update. Further, either my old monitor’s HDMI died or the Rpi HDMI has failed. Software issues suck! Will trouble-shoot and possible burn another image and test. Hopefully I can find the source and correct, else install a new image. Grateful for this
antique Thinkpad, it just keeps puttering along :)

PS modern rigs can be quite a bit off. I just helped a ham set up her system, and we had to set her “sweet spot” to 1515hz! This can be cured with a TXCO upgrade if your MFG has it as an option. This ham did install it and it was money/time well spent.

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

NCS < WB7EUX – This was one of the most EXCITING and entertaining sessions I have participated in. Thanks to Minday and Doug!

My radio is plagued by a continuous carrier type of signal that forced me to use a 600 Hz filter to keep it out of the audio. This has been going on for weeks now and repeats itself up to 40m at about 25KHz intervals. I have not taken the time to determine if the signal is coming from my property or somewhere else. This should be a entertaining and educational project :-)

Daffodils just poked their first leaves up out of the ground (about 1/2 inch) and prim roses are just starting to green up. Dare I say it? Has spring arrived in Wallowa County? I’ll let you know about mid June.

All is well. 73 de WB7EUX

We had a 4.7 earthquake today, wasn’t very strong but it lasted for a good bit of time for a 4.7. Never a dull moment in quake territory :). The 2 quakes we had a few months ago got me thinking about what to do if we never have the real big one, which is why I signed up for CERT training coming up in April in Scotia. For some reason having issues with not sending what I copy and paste! As always enjoy the net and look forward to next week, 73s!

Nice job Barry. If you were participating in the NBEMS exercise… you would upload that file to FLAMP and TX. In an emergency it cuts
down on extra relays… it breaks the file into blocks and if a stn misses a block, then u dont have to relay the entire file, just the missing
block. You can try uploading a file to FLAMP next week in the monitor’s session.
Anything else?? < W7ZAPØe”l IloneaCea wc e?e4 ISslj·iwyeetdfiai aß Á ÁAet

TU Mindy.

April, if you still have FLMSG open with the info. Click on File/Save/ Then click on Desktop. Save the file.

Now, go to FLAMP. To to Transmit Tab near top, then click on the Add Button about Middle Right. Scroll over to Desktop, then click
on that message, click ADD or OPEN. That will load the file
into FLAMP for you to XMIT.
