Propagation was good tonight, but not good enough for OFDM modes. No one CONFIRMED OFDM-750F and a single station CONFIRMED OFDM-500F. MFSK-32 CONFIRMED the remaining six stations. OFDM requires solid band condx. OFDM-500F is 62.5baud; 750F is 125baud. Both are within the 80m 300baud limit. They’ll be useful modes when band condx are solid.

OFDM 500F /750F are intended for NVIS and regular HF-skip usage.
FLDIGI User Manual 4.1.24, Ch34.1, pp370.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes James KI7LVZ in Kimberly,ID. We’ll ask him to review the website Quick-Start Guide: http://orcadigitalnet.com/quick-start/. Welcome back to Cowan N5QDH in Farmington,NM, Barry KJ7WHE in Nampa,ID & Greg KG7D in Carson City,NV. We’ve not seen them for awhile.

Hats-Off to the Ops that regularly ck-in Active and work the NBEMS Exercises. These Ops sustain a weekly working example of efficient digital networking and NBEMS traffic-handling. Without them, we’d be a ck-in/comment net. They’re keeping their digital skills sharp and enabling others to learn digital tactics and routines. There’s a lot of knowledge, experience, and depth in our members.

For the Western Digital Net NCS schedule, check our Calendar, bottom of mainpage: http://orcadigitalnet.com. Brad WA7HHE has joined Jaye KE6SLS and Don KJ7VGV as a WDN Net Control Station. One or two more Ops will be ideal. Four Ops for the regular Wednesdays and a fifth Op for the occasional 5th Wednesday and to fill-in for the other four. WDN is not difficult to run; the experience is well worth the effort. In an extended emergency, WDN could be meeting more often and very busy. By volunteering, you can learn Net Control skills w/o the pressure of an actual emergency.

Did you note Neil W0NRP’s comments from Missouri?  “MO HF Digital training net is coming along.” There’s a lot of active digital Ops in Missouri and they’re working on an HF digital training net. We look forward to supporting them and eventually training, practicing, and exchanging traffic with them. Some ORCA Ops have sufficient signal and location for Relaying traffic w/Missouri nets.

Next Tuesday, we’ll experiment with Complementary Macros in the Comment Round. Scroll down the Log to ANNOUNCEMENTS 21/Jan/23 and review the instructions. Questions about this Exercise? Email: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com.

Thanks for emailing the beginning/end ORCAtest images.

ANNOUNCEMENTS 21/Jan/23

Tonight’s NBEMS traffic-handling Exercise features FLMSG Radiogram. Some text in this Announcement will be included in the Exercise. NBEMS Exercise questions primarily simulate message content. Occasionally, they’re instructive or interrogatory. Beside NBEMS traffic-handling routines and tactics, Exercises give practice in Situational Awareness and Reading Comprehension. You must maintain focus on traffic-handling tasks and your position in net flow. When we don’t parse instructions correctly, we’re unable to fully implement them.

Next session, 28/Feb/23, we’ll work with Complementary Macros in the Comment Round. We’ll pair our Path Evaluation Macro with our ID/STOP Macro(< K7KY<RX>). Using two Macros and FLDIGI features, we’ll send ORCAtest.png, comments, and ID/STOP Macro in a single transmission. The Path Evaluation Macro and ORCAtest image are available for download at the website, top of right column: http://orcadigitalnet.com. Comment Macro is here: http://orcadigitalnet.com/macros/

The Exercise begins w/Path Evaluation Macro. We’re not changing mode, so we don’t need RSID Tags. We’re also leaving the transmitter ON. Remove these Tags, <TXRSID:on>, <@TXRSID:off>, & <RX>. Before removing Tags, SAVE a copy so you can restore the Macro. Now, the Macro will ignore RSID and leave transmitter ON.

For comments, use the text-file associated w/your Comment Macro or a new text file. You can drag’n drop this file into the TX window or Copy/Paste text from this file into the TX window. Be sure to SAVE each Edit if you intend to drag’n drop. Your ID/Stop Macro will close w/your CALLSIGN & STOP TX.

Exercise Sequence: Execute these steps one after another w/o waiting for one to finish; FLDIGI will queue them.
1) Execute Path Macro
2) Drag’n Drop or Copy/Paste comments in FLDIGI TX window
3) Execute ID/STOP Macro
Details:
Experiment w/transmitter OFF. If it work in FLDIGI, it should work on-air. Try it on-air with a colleague when you’ve sorted it out. Pay attention to spacing btwn words so content is neat and easy to parse. A single blank line nicely separates topics. At end of comment text, add ‘ BTN ‘. Your ID/STOP Macro sends your CALLSIGN and Ends TX. Have fun!

Band looks good tonight. OFDM is a a peculiar mode. Tonight was a good test for it.
Seemed like Doug’s radio/tuner was ‘twitching’ during TX of OFDM-500.
Nice work to the new OPs Jadon KJ7RBS & Dave KI7VLV on 1st Active NBEMS.

Here’s the breakdown of mode RX:
OFDM-750R: 0 stns
OFDM-500R: 2 stns
MFSK-32: 5 stns

Had a glitch when I tried to TX this and sent Late CK-in on top of my message :-)

Foul wx today/tonight, through Friday AM. I’m wrapped in my official
BINKY keeping warm in the radio shack. Power outages, trees down, road
closures. Ick!

Was at AUXCOMM meeting just prior to net time. Returned to an ice
covered & COLD car. However, we rehearsed M9 earthquake scenario. I
was amazed at some responses. Good training and learning experience.
However, I came away fearing the possibility of such a quake and how
it will effect me, now as a disabled person. Planning, training, and
doing level best to prepare is my only solution & hope!

One of my preparation tools is THIS NET, including net discipline &
structure. Key ingredients to a viable net.

Turkey had another large quake yesterday as our HF emergency net was
beginning. My heart breaks for those lost and dealing with the after-
math of such devastation.

I observed Doug’s radio/tuner was ‘twitching’ during both of the ODFM
modes here.

Noticed another strong signal right next to us. However, FLD & FLA
were able to copy 100%.

kj7rbs Jadon is doing a great job coming up to speed with the net!

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!

program BPQ32
and after more than a month still can’t get it to TX. The monitor window shows everything is working properly.
I even tried using Outpost but it requires “echo” command on radio and that messes with my Fldigi suite.
Think I might have to go with plan B for informaiton relay on WDN. Thx for doing the net Doug and Mindy. Bet
the strom already passed by you as well.

Don’t forget to join us this Thursday for WDN. Various Ops are sharing some interesting topics..

ORCA < K7KY We usually send ANNOUNCEMENTS with the Macro Tag <FILE>. When there’s actual Macro Tags in the text, like
tonight, we can’t use <FILE>. We sent tonight’s ANNOUNCEMENTS by Copy/Paste into the TX window, just as the Active stations did in
the NBEMS Exercise.

No VARA QRM tonite. Welcome back to Cowan N5QDH in Farmington,NM, Barry KJ7WHE in Nampa,ID & Greg KG7D in Carson City,NV.

Ck-in is going very smoothly. Thanks for your focus and attention. Don’t forget to send your CALLSIGN in CAPS. It’s easier for us to
read quickly. We’re also doing well with RSIDs. Members only have TxID active when changing modes. Only NCS has TxID Active.

You’re welcome to change mode for Traffic and/or Comments. Please choose a mode likely to succeed. When you change modes, NCS
resets Net Mode.

After working the NBEMS Exercise perfectly, everyone capped it of with perfect results. Maybe these Exercises are becoming too easy?

Thanks….

I have ex297.m2s file ready to send via FLAMP.

Did not receive any of the OFDM transmission at any speed. Signal level indicator stayed near the noise level, with only occasional brief
jumps up above it, but could see the signal in the waterfall. Never really exceeded the squelch level.

Otherwise, good copy of your station tonight in MFSK32. Got all of the EX297.txt from K7KY in FLAMP.
Also copying W7ZAP,
KJ7VGV, – z t l,2,5
W6DLW – Missed 0, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
KG7VVN – Missed blk 3
could not copy other stations.

Are people listing the signal reports using the s/n figures at the bottom left of the FLDigi window?

MO HF Digital training net is coming along. We have decided to use a frequency on 40m as we get better j;h Sl coverage on Sunday
afternoons. We use a Zoom session for discussion and screen sharing which works out well. We did a series on FSQ mode for the
most useful commands and this last week we tried using ARQ in FLMsg. That didn’t go well…. only one message made it through. For
some reason all the others hung up and timed out. Need to figure that one out. Any ideas appreciated.
We make the 3 most recent Zoom recordings available online. I can send you links if you wish.

Nice warm weather here the last couple of days. 60 deg highs 70 tomorrow but rainy. Cold Thurs. Oh well….

o ahOops! I must have hit a key connected to a macro… my fingers are tiring anyway, sending the header 2x usualy saves time and
effort. you can disable it to 1x when you know the path is solid & working a single station. for the net purposes, it’s best to hv header
2x.. u can email us with questions and comments anytime and we can often work off-net to resolve issues. btu < K7KY

Tnx Doug. In answer to Jadon’s querry. The UNPROTO is a raw send of file, and
there is no way to fill if any part of it is scrambled. So we don’t use
UNPROTO. We use the normal send method and that breaks a file into smaller bits
and each bit then can be filled with a REPORT. Good question!

RR Jaye I hope the hail doesn’t get alll the way North to Brookings getting these 2 files 4 u makes me think of how we would
work with files that we can fwd on an Emergency or Traffic net.. it would go just like this, I assume. btu < K7KY

rg. and knowning how to fetch them is half the battle. We should probably do a little more
of that file manglement in the future! It keeps us on our toes.

Looking at rain gauge, I think it is full of ice and will no longer give a real reading since
the water can’t be measured! I can’t believe how cold I am! I changed into my fuzzy slippers, still have all my layers on. Where’s
that spring again??! :)

Okay, gonna warm up some STEW!
