Again, 80m went long as the net progressed, but around mid-point began improving and the lost stations were back in contact. We managed with MFSK-32, but it was not the best solution for all.  Steve K6ETA suggested we may have done better with THOR-22. Mode change can be a difficult call for me when most stations are printing well, but a couple have difficulty. In retrospect, I could have dropped back to THOR-22 and then MFSK-16. This may keep all in contact, but slow the net significantly. Obviously, net-mode will determine how much practice we can have in a reasonable time. When the band is poor, we may have to drop some activities in the slower modes.

Welcome to two Ops new to ORCA, Marty AK7ME in Rigby,ID and Dan NI9Y in Mishawaka,IN. The long net is favoring more distant stations. I had difficulty connecting the nearby stations in Eureka,CA tonight. Clifford N0LKC checked in portable from another NM campground around net-end with a solid signal too.

Relays are more important now. Brad WA7HHE relayed block fills for Mindy W7ZAP during the weekly FLAMP exercise. Rick N6IET relayed two stations I didn’t hear at check-in. Both stations were in contact for the comment round. During Traffic, Rick sent an Op/Image that printed perfectly here.

You can check-out early if you have to leave. Just send your call on freq or on the WF to get my attention or tell me at check-in you’ll be leaving a certain point and I’ll log it.

Thanks to all for contributing your knowledge and skills in digital practice. Regular practice of efficient routines is what makes competent digital operators. Regular practice strengthens mental/muscle memory and frees attention from repetitive tasks. I like the old saying, ‘Practice makes Perfect’. We may not be perfect, but we’ll be a byte ahead of those who don’t practice.

As always, we appreciate your kind comments and welcome your thoughts and suggestions.

ORCA Announcements 20/dec/16

Tonight we begin another simple file manipulation exercise using

FLMSG & FLAMP. Our weekly FLAMP exercise, up next, will distribute

‘ex7.txt’. Part of the exercise is parsing/following instructions.

Note: At the top of the FLAMP TX tab is the ‘To:’ window; it defaults

to ‘QST’. Setting this variable ID’s the target station. In a real

traffic situation, only the target station needs fills.

So, remember to change ‘Send To:’ from QST to ORCA,NCS,K7KY,etc

You can return this exercise to NCS in FLAMP today, or any practice net.

As always, these exercises are optional; you can send other traffic,

images, or QRU.

Please send only one practice traffic per net. Bulletins and images are

OK; that’s your traffic for the session. Our time is limited. As participation grows we want to continue providing comprehensive practice

to all.

TOMORROW: FEMA is conducting a digital exercise in Region X, UT,AK,OR,WA. A voice net will open on 60 meter channel 1 (5330.5 kHz USB) at 0900 PST (1700 UTC) with net control announcing the digital net (the alternate voice net frequency is 5403.5 kHz USB). The call for check-ins will be postponed until after the first round of digital transmissions. Participating stations should check in with call sign, city and state of operation, and a report on the ability to receive the digital messages, along with preferred mode.

Weekly Net Report usually posted next day

:mg:682 The ICS 213 is an Interdepartmental/Agency Communications Form.

Passing a 213 through your Communications Unit it is imperative that you log the message and keep a copy in case you receive a status request.

For example: If you receive a radio request from a Divison Sup for critical supplies, you want to be able to show you passed the 213 request on to the Supply Unit. If a runner takes the message to the Supply Unit you will want to have the Supply Unit sign a duplicate paper copy to providing proof the message was delivered. [CYA]

The ICS 213 Message should indicate “What” is needed, “When” needed (Date and Time), The physical location “Where” the item/items are needed.

ORCA de N6IET N6IET

Signal reports from Los Angeles.

I’m running 30 watts this evening.

Band is long this evening.

I lied when I said I could copy everybody. I had tuned in late and missed all the early check-ins,

and some of them I cannot copy at all.

Doug K7KY – You’re the strongest at 0 to 10 dB s/n but only 80% print due to QSB.

I saw K6ETA check in about 4 times, some using the WF, but I never noticed his s/n.

Bill K6QOG – -5 to 0 dB and 100% flamp copy.

Steve – I saw his wf checkin but never actually heard him.

Gene W1EEP – Also very strong at 1 to 6 dB, 100% print, 33% flamp

Howard KB6NN – nary a peep

Christine AF7OK – 6dB s/n. Very nice signal. 100%

Dave K7DV – 16 to -8 dB, 20%

Marty AK7ME – -3 dB 80% print

Dan NI9Y – -12 to 1 dB 25%

Brad WA7HHE – 0 to 4 dB 100%

Mindy W7ZAP – -10 to 0 dB 50% print, 75% flamp

I hope everybody enjoys a great Winter Solstice tomorrow.
