Another marginal band night with a big Roster and a full-house FLAMP Exercise. Mindy W7ZAP chose an all THOR mode lineup that CONFIRMED nine of the ten stations. The band dropped Tom WB7TZD, in Vancouver,WA, early in the net. Ck-In went like clockwork too. Thanks for helping make ck-in orderly. It can be our busiest time. An accurate Roster is essential to net operations. Our Roster is more detailed than most and takes time to compile. We’re copying and pasting between applications. We’re often waiting for the RX screen to stop scrolling; that’s why our ck-in protocol calls for minimal information on a single line. It’s all we need to compile an accurate Roster.

ORCA DIGITAL NET Welcomes Ron K7HDX in Cedar City,UT. The concentration of digital Ops in Cedar City is most unusual. When RCARC Ops first joined ORCA, they were often a third to half the Roster. It may be the elevation or something in the air that concentrates so many digital Ops in one town. In Wyoming and Montana, we’ve not heard one digital station. Hats off to the Rainbow Canyons ARC, an active and engaged radio club! Ron is RCARC’s Vice President. Three of their five club officers are ORCA members. Fred KI7TPD is President and Dennis W6DLW is the Editor. Larry N7SND, RCARC Treasure, also worked ORCA for awhile. Rainbow Canyons ARC is a big part of ORCA DIGITAL NET.

The FLAMP Optional Exercise asked, what communications platform does the American Red Cross plan to use in their upcoming exercise on 14/Nov/20. Some of you picked the logical choice, FLDIGI. Oddly though, that’s not what they’ve chosen. Winlink is the digital mode ARC plans to rely on. Like other civic organizations, they may be slow to realize that Winlink is right for some traffic and FLDIGI is better for wide-distribution and time-sensitive traffic. The two platforms are good partners. We know this, but it seems to take civic EMCOMM agencies awhile to figure it out.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex192.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP
exercise. If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in
the Traffic round with FLAMP.

Dave W1HKJ has released the new FLDIGI version, 4.1.15. It seems stable and w/o issues.
The new Macro TAG, @LOCK:…. is supported.

Familiarity with your PC file system is important for handling digital traffic. You may be
storing and forwarding messages, or sending them on by other delivery systems. You may
be composing messages in FLMSG or other text editing apps. To send those messages, you
need to know their computer file-system address.

The weekly FLAMP Exercise is designed to present and practice file manipulation and
transmission with the FLDIGI NBEMS suite. We developed this Exercise from a simpler
exercise designed by Bliss W7RUG, the Idaho ERC Digital Net NCS before Dave K7DV.
We added sequential REPORTING by each station to give practice in monitoring net flow,
knowing your place on the Roster, and preparing to send a REPORT when prompted.
Seldom will you need every aspect of this Exercise to process traffic, but in difficult
band condx and emergencies, you will have the traffic-handling skills you need.

An OPTIONAL Exercise, included within the FLAMP Exercise, gives practice working
within the PC file system while maintaining focus on net flow and your place in the
Roster. You should not work the OPTIONAL Exercise until you’re comfortable with the
basic Exercise. The OPTIONAL Exercse usually entails creating a new file, copying and
pasting between apps, and sending the new file to NCS in the Traffic Round.

Thanks for emailing the original Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

NCS < K6ETA Great net tonight and I love seeing new stations as well as a large roster! It’s also nice to have some sunspots!

We’ve put in another bid for a home in Mt Shasta, CA – so cross ur fingers for us! It would be 2 acres of radio freedom – no CC&Rs or HOAs… just nature and a few trains honking their horns on the way past. Antenna farm to follow if all goes through!

Haven’t seen WA7WWW lately… anyone heard from Matt?

No worries on Comments order… NCS always has a reason! =)

I arrived here in Gallup NM on Sunday. Currently, I am getting used to the new job routines at Rehoboth McKinley Hospital. Things have changed since I was last here in 2018. For starters, Halloween trick or treating and the hot air ballon festival have been banned. The local flea market has been shut down and the atmosphere at the local Safeway is a little bit like a concentration camp with fencing all around the building except for one entrance, and security people at the door. The flea market used to be quite an affair with hundreds of private vendors. The good part about this is that I am able to set up along the roadside where the flea market used to be and I have a clear horizon in all directions. Big Sky country here in nortwestern NM too. High today of 75 and low of 35 and not a cloud in the heavens. The weather forecast is for a cold front and wind coming in here on Friday. I won’t make WDN on Thursday due to being on the swing shift and orientation. Best wishes to all ORCA ops.

Sorry to hr abt the changes in Gallup probably happening in many other towns too.. You’ll find out more than the rest of us Bruce no one on the net travels like you (-: BK Over 2 Bruno KG7VVN 4 Comments < NCS

NCS < WB7EUX Another wow! K7KY and W7ZAP at +15 to +20!

We completed our winter prep today with collars around the roses and hauling in all irrigation hoses for winter storage along with their respective manifolds. We are expecting teens to single digits for lows over the next week along with snow. Very early and unusual for this time of year.

Sadly, Wallowa County recorded its second death due to COVID-19 this past week. Tourists still arriving despite the cold. Some observe wearing masks and some don’t. I think tourist season will end this coming week with the sub-freezing temps. Our county became somewhat of a destination with people that just wanted to get away from the cities. Some of our restaurants and lodging have enjoyed(?) a record year. Our mayor, who owns a pub and eatery in Joseph, had 1 1/2 hour seating delays on Mondays since her place was one of the few open. She told us it was nice to have the business but extremely stressful.

Much frustration here. Wiped out my old OS on this computer and installed new Xubuntu. Had it going, even got a late night check in from one of our ORCA regulars.

But lost my sound card…Reinstalled again today and I have figured out that my modem ports are listed then inverted :| I don’t even know how to figure that one out.

But I did download it from the UK, so I guess it is supposed to be UPsideDOWN!

Anyway, I just got the #*(@)(! thing running minutes before the net! Love the new FL* software!

Another sunny day here today with cool wind and more wind/fire warnings. But the new LIPO4 monster battery is 100% full.

*Thro22 is really punching through the fading well here!

I think the Red Cross <rc> is planning to use FLmsg with custom forms.

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
