ORCA DIGITAL NET, Report 19/May/15

Check-ins: 7
Traffic: 6

K7KY Doug T NCS

Tonight was a great digital net. The net ran very smoothly from beginning to end. Howard KB6NN somehow managed to send an entire ICS-213 message with his signal not deviating one hertz from 1500. Even VOA digital broadcasts aren’t that stable. Don WA6NBG sent the Humboldt bulletin. He will miss the next two ORCA nets.

When I have traffic, I usually send it at the end of rotation, but tonight I went first. My traffic was about the FRN CW Nets run by JB KR5RR. JB was going to check out early for dinner and I wanted him to be around in case there were questions. I’ve been holding this message until Ops I know do CW were here. I still missed some of them and maybe I’ll run it again when Jim KW6JIM and Jaye KE6SLS here. I did catch a couple CW ops who arrived late, Ken K7IFG and Keith K7KEV. If you enjoy CW you might drop in on JB Monday (80m) or Tuesday (40m). Details are in the net log below.

Just as we completed the traffic round and reception reports, Ken K7IFG checked in with traffic in flamp. Everyone copied it 100% and sent CONFIRMED REPORTs. We’re doing very well with flamp. We’ll appreciate this app for long files and poor band conditions.

Just before closing the net, Keith K7KEV checked in. He’d been monitoring us and sent a reception report; he was copied 100% by all. Keith lives in Forest Grove, OR, Washington County and knows his way around the digital realm.

Following the net, JB sent me the greyscale test image. I don’t often see how the image decodes at distant stations.  JB lives in Solano Co, just west of San Francisco.

JB runs the nets with Farnsworth CW spacing, meaning you can set your keyer to 20wpm character speed and send at a

somewhat slower word speed if you like. The nets are friendly and interesting. JB runs them smoothly and they’re

great forums for improving your fist, and learning to send from your head, and copying in your head. Net members are

friendly and supportive. If you’re into CW, tune in and check-in.

The nets are sponsored by North American QRP CW Club. You can use the power you need to be heard on the net. Here’s the details:

:s1:51 PS: Please report my waterfall center frequency TNX

:mg:1085 Been away for a bit but now I’m back. Some Tuesday nights I may not be able to participate fully in the net.

When that’s the case, I keep the radio on to catch what I miss. Last week, I was away from the radio the whole time

but had FLDIGI running, receiving, with SQL off so I could get FLAMP if any. Came back to it several hours later, and

had all the messages open on the desktop. The text area above the waterfall was full of garbage, because SQL was off,

but above that was a normal display of what went on during the net. The s-meter was reading S9 noise, which was way up

from 5PM when I set the radio to frequency to receive. That may be why I don’t have much garbage between transmissions

the first half of the net. In any event, I only got KBD and FLMSG. Yes, I did have FLAMP and FLMSG set to start with

FLDIGI and left them running the whole time, but as I said, no FLAMP messages. However, reading back the text display,

it doesn’t look like anyone was using FLAMP. More to study, more work to do. Thanks Doug for the weekly email

reports. 73, Howard, KB6NN

SHORTWAVE RADIOGRAM

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
