Whoa! Big net tonight. The band was poor to begin with, but improved as the net progressed. Lot’s of check-ins tonight. This was a more challenging net for me than usual. Partly because some of our protocols have changed recently and I’ve not yet incorporated them into my routine. And, 14 Ops is a lot for our net structure. Thanks for hanging in there.

We plan to divide the net when check-ins reach 12-14. It shouldn’t be much different for you than any other net. We’ll split after Bulletins in the Traffic round, so everyone will participate in the regular net functions. Jaye KE6SLS, NCS/Alt, will take half the stations up freq. Both groups will complete the Traffic and Comment rounds and conclude individually. Jaye will save his net log and we’ll include it in the weekly Net Log for review.

Don WA6GTU checked in for the first time tonight from Cedar City,UT. He’s obviously familiar with the FLDIGI suite; he flowed through the weekly FLAMP traffic w/o a hitch. We missed him later in the net and I don’t know if he lost contact or had to leave early. Anyway, welcome to ORCA, Don. Speaking of FLAMP and REPORTS, I asked Ralph WB6SDR to RELAY the last block fill for our weekly message. But, I didn’t check to see if he is familiar with the routine. The net flows so well I can forget to review the use of special software features that we use.

Sometimes Ops lose contact with the net and we don’t know they’re gone. That’s radio networking. If you want to leave early, please check-out so we don’t call you during rotations.

Good to have Gene W1EEP back from wildfire duty. Although I copied him well, he had difficulty copying the net tonight. On the other hand, Brad WA7HHE always does well from his QTH @ 6k’ ASL in Cedar City,UT.

I had to reinstall FLAMP today. It was not FETCHING fill blocks correctly. In the RX pane, the FETCH button will copy the blocks requested by all stations into the ‘blocks’ window. The RELAY button will TX these blocks. Any station that has CONFIRMED the msg can RELAY the needed blocks. If FLAMP does not FETCH needed blocks, you can type them into the ‘block’ window, separated by commas.

Don’t be concerned about mistakes. We’re here to learn and practice, and have some fun in the process.  The net runs well because you have the interest and focus to engage with enthusiasm. From my perspective as NCS, it’s remarkable how well this diverse group of radio Ops works together. Seldom do the same Ops check-in every week. But the net runs pretty much the same whoever is here. We no longer have Ops that are mainly seeking a podium or can’t resist interrupting the net every few minutes.

Steve K6WSJ suggests we could do a quick round where everyone sends the same text to provide a standard for reception reports. I think this could improve the quality of our reports, but would add another activity to an already busy net. We’ve just made some small changes to the net and I’m sure you’ve noticed that I’m making more errors in process and typing. It takes me a few nets to incorporate changes to our routines smoothly. I’m hesitant to refine the net too much. I hope to keep it similar to an emergency digital traffic net.

Our reception reports have developed a life of their own. Much more information is now available for signal and band evaluation. Some of this improvement I credit to Rick N6IET’s influence. Rick is NCS for a QRP CW net where signal reports are important and realistic. When you want a realistic signal report, call a QRP station. I usually don’t have sufficient attention to follow the reports during net, but really enjoy sorting thru them while editing noise out of the net log. Reception reports are very useful and I think all serious radio Ops appreciate them. Evaluating band condx and configuring our equipment is fundamental to selecting the optimum mode.

Here’s some images from the net. The Apollo logo accompanied Eric KK6RKY’s traffic about an Apollo II computer event during the moon landing. Howard KB6NN copied Eric’s image correctly, but our test image a little out of sync. The distortion indicates a ‘sound card whose sampling rate is not an exact multiple of 8000 Hz’.  Odd that he copied one image in-sync and not the other.  Something may have changed in his setup between the transmissions.  If synchronization drifted at my station, everyone would have copied it skewed.

The net was long tonight, but it went very well from my perspective. I’m always interested in how the net works, or doesn’t, for you and your ideas for development and improvement. Thanks again for working with us and I hope to see you again next Tuesday evening. 73 Doug K7KY

:mg:1861 Apollo 11 “Computer Got Loaded”

47 Years ago, July 20, at about 20 UTC

The Apollo 11 Lunar Module Eagle separated from the Command Module Columbia. Collins, alone aboard Columbia, inspected

Eagle as it pirouetted before him to ensure the craft was not damaged.

Five minutes into the descent burn, and 6,000 feet above the surface of the Moon, the LM navigation and guidance computer

distracted the crew, Armstrong and Aldrin, with the first of several unexpected “1202” and “1201” program alarms.

“Due to an error in the checklist manual, the rendezvous radar switch was placed in the wrong position. This caused it to send

erroneous signals to the computer. The result was that the computer was being asked to perform all of its normal functions for

landing while receiving an extra load of spurious data which used up 15% of its time.

The computer (or rather the software in it) was smart enough to recognize that it was being asked to perform more tasks than it

should be performing. It then sent out an alarm, which meant to the astronaut, I’m overloaded with more tasks than I should be

doing at this time and I’m going to keep only the more important tasks; i.e., the ones needed for landing …

Actually, the computer was programmed to do more than recognize error conditions. A complete set of recovery programs was

incorporated into the software. The software’s action, in this case, was to eliminate lower priority tasks and re-establish the more

important ones …

If the computer hadn’t recognized this problem and taken recovery action, I doubt if Apollo 11 would have been the successful

moon landing it was.”

tts, titled “Computer Got Loaded”, published in Datamation, March 1, 1971

:mg:1503

Rumor has it ARS W1EEP (QTH- Pine Valley, Utah) has been seen in the area wearing a DRONE FINDER/KILLER T-Shirt.

The reappearance of a drone over the Saddle Fire once again stopped firefighting efforts on Friday night.

Around 7 p.m., air operations were grounded when a drone was seen in the Temporary Flight Restriction area above the fire,

according to a National Forest Saddle Fire update.

“If they collide with any of our aircraft, they can either bring an aircraft down or it can also cause a significant amount of damage

to aircraft if it collides,” said Carissa Silvis, public information officer for the Saddle Fire.

Silvis said all flight operations were discontinued for the day. Operations resumed Saturday.

According to authorities, shutting down operations affects fire suppression work and can prevent rescue efforts for firefighters in the

area. There are 242 personnel, including firefighters, pilots and incident command, assigned to the fire, according to Silvis.

Rumor has it ARS W1EEP is roaming the area of Pine Valley looking for Drones and Drone Pilots is wearing a Drone Hunter/Kille

r T-Shirt.

The fire, which started on June 13 from lightning strike, was at 42-percent containment and had spread across 2,242 acres as of

Saturday afternoon. Voluntary evacuations are still in place for the roughly 500 residents of Pine Valley, which sits less than three

miles to the north.

The Pine Valley Recreation Area in the Dixie National Forest is still closed to the public.

During flamp reporting period, Howard noted cw down about 500hz, out of my audio passband, but see it on wf, think it is ARRL

code practice. Then I heard CB audio being played over our signals, did not interfer with my copy however.

flamp tiny blocks makes it much longer, 32 blk size would cut time roughly in half.

Yeah, I got confused and sent my signal reports plain text during the traffic round.

Sorry. I should have used FLMSG for that.

Signals are getting better with the fall of darkness.

But I still can’t hear Howard, this week. Maybe a few chirps in the noise. :-)

Did I mention testing a used FT-890 this past few days? Steve found one at a thrift shop,

condition unknown, so I encouraged him to buy it. He got it for $95 with 7-day return option.

I tested it and found some problems that would have required a better technician than I am

to repair it. So he’ll return it tomorrow for a refund. But if it had worked, it would have been

a bargain!

Oh, you want to know what was wrong with it?

1. It took half an hour of warmup before the receiver audio started working.

2. No transmit audio on SSB. (But the VOX worked!)

3. Power dropped permanently from 100 watts to under 10 watts after 10 minutes of testing.

4. Once the rcve audio came on, it made a pretty good CW rig until the power dropped.

Then it became a QRP rig. :-(

I’ve been copying the VOA Radiogram digital broadcasts on Saturday mornings.

Almost 100% print. Anyone else? Does anyone know how much power that station runs?

73 to all and to all a Good Night!

SHORTWAVE RADIOGRAM

Shortwave Radiogram transmits digital text and images on an analog shortwave broadcast transmitter. The program is produced and presented by Dr. Kim Andrew Elliott KD9XB. Shortwave Radiogram continues VOA Radiogram's tradition testing new modes and is an interesting source for Digital Ops wishing to practice more with FLDIGI & FLAMP.
