Ck-Ins are increasing as Fall approaches, daylight diminishes, and band condx improve. We logged 27 Ops this evening in a textbook Early Ck-In. Thanks for giving us time to acknowledge the previous station b4 you call.

It seems we addressed Macro Saving last time we practiced w/Macros. We’ll look again and sort out NBEMS Exercise instructions . When creating or altering Macros, Saving them is part of the Exercise. The Saving step is included in Macro Exercises intentionally. Jaye KE6SLS sent this emphatic comment: ‘REMINDER: *DO NOT SAVE* YOUR MACRO WHEN CLOSING FLDIGI TONIGHT!’. What should you do? Save or Don’t Save?

No problems result from Saving Macros, they’re easily deleted. You may later use the Exercise Macro for practice, or revise it for another purpose. Problems develop most often when Macros are not Saved. If you forget to Save a new or edited Macro and switch Macro files or close FLDIGI, your new work is lost and unrecoverable. No harm comes from Saving NBEMS Practice Macros. Better to Save and not need Macros than not Save and wish you did.

Speaking of Saving Macros, the <SAVE> Tag Saves the current Macro file instantly. Make a Macro with the <SAVE> Tag &/ButtonName= SAVE. Your current Macro file is Saved instantly w/single click. Saving Macros via the File menu takes 4 clicks.

Welcome back to Steve N7SDC in Rigby,ID. It’s been awhile. Four Ops took advantage of the Monitor’s Session this evening. We had a round robin of input helping explain where FLDIGI stores images on Windows OSs. Carroll W7WXV has a quick method of entering the /images/ folder quickly. We’ll add his method to website Tips.

Next session, 26/Sep, NBEMS Exercise includes Mode Shoot-Out between MFSK & new THOR modes. The new THOR modes are included in the most recent versions of FLDIGI, FLMSG, FLAMP. Be prepared.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s NBEMS Exercise gives practice creating/altering Macros quickly. There may be times when you need a new Macro now. When we’re familiar with the basic Macro Tags, we can create them easily. This Exercise will help familiarize you with creating/altering Macros quickly. In an actual event, you may copy portions of another Macro or revise an existing Macro. With a little practice, you can do it quickly & save repetitive typing.

Just prior to the Comment Round, we’ll transmit a Fire Map image in grayscale. Please email this image instead of the usual ORCAtest images. We’ll publish them in the Net Report & see how they decoded around the net. We begin w/Fire Maps because it’s Fire Season, but images are images. They can be more informative than long expository files. Images take longer to transmit and are more easily degraded than text files. Still, done correctly in reasonable condx, they can convey greater grasp-of-situation than written explanations. Fire isn’t their only use; graphic directions are prime candidates for images.

There’s a bit more to transmitting a useful map. Grayscale Maps are the easiest to read and TX about 2x color speed. High contrast is essential. White paper isn’t truly white. When you have time, making the background pure white w/an image editor will improve clarity. When condx permit, sending in MFSK-64 can produce higher granularity than MFSK-32. TX speed is about the same.

Next week, 26/Sep, the NBEMS Exercise will include a Mode Shoot-Out between MFSK & the new THOR Modes. We’ll send the same file w/different names in MFSK & THOR and compare the results. Mode speed will be determined by band condx. You’ll need the new NBEMS apps, fldigi-4.2.00, flamp-2.2.09, and flmsg-4.0.23: http://www.w1hkj.com/files.

In my ham specific 3D printing journeys as of late I designed and 3D printed a simple ported speaker for one of my shack VHF

ORCA < WA7JYK – Thanks to Doug and Mindy for another very dynamic training session! MFSK32 rocks the ether. Despite the
geo storm, my software copied all but one station tonight. Tonight’s exercise was very informative. The added activity with the
Fire Map made for a great training evening. I like the variation in weekly exercises.

Had a lot of fun with CW this past week. Contacts on 20 and 40 coast to coast. Had a nice QSO with my friend in Texas on 20m.
He boomed in here with 100 watts mid-day.

The thermometer read 35 deg F this morning so we pulled all our geranium and begonia pots in for over wintering. Wow! Fall is
upon us.

All is well. 73 de WA7JYK

ORCA < WA7HHE I enjoyed the net tonight using the OFDM modes. I found this info from the FLDIGI manual interesting:
The forward error correction used by the OFDM modes are inspired by the longer constraint length codes used by
NASA for deep-space communications.
Only in recent years have home computers become powerful enough to run these FEC algorithms realtime.
The long-codes provitra FACD Äz5s  or
deep-fades.
Might mention if working with an EOC they generally are provided a Incident Action Plan which includes Fire Maps. This by the Fire
Incident Management Team assigned to the fire.
Great net tonight. 73’s Brad

Thrilled with tonight’s great signals!

It was VERY satisfying to see activity on this frequency last evening
just prior to my Monday Humboldt County Emergency Digital Net! The
ops were chattering away and left time for my to toss in my call, then
yielded so I could open the net.  GREAT WORK FOLKS!  And Thank you for
understanding.

Today, we FINALLY got some clear skies & sunshine.  Last sun was last
Thursday.  My batteries needed that sunlight injection 😄  Also quite
happy the smoke has found other paths, not over Eureka!  However, as
ORCA DN opens for check-ins, I can clearly see the yellow/orange hue
of the smoke in the higher atmosphere.

First FLA w/Mindy I was quick enough to further REDUCE my RF GAIN,
it made an immediate difference in copy!  I have my attenuator ON
and normally run RF gain at 6, but I turned it to 4 for this ex. ALSO
very important to either OPEN SQL or disable it for PSK/ODFM modes.
UPDATE:
Here’s the breakdown of RX by modes:
PSK-250RC2: 1 stn
PSK-250R: 0 stns  PLUS 1  😄
MFSK-32: 7 stns

TFC round will be FAST tonight! 😄

Looking forward to seeing the image copied tonight!

Stay well, practice often, and make sure to have some fun doing it!
