Check-in was a great demonstration of the value of RELAY. Propagation was poor for some staions in UT. Ken KR7KR was testing a new inverted-L antenna which did very well @ 40W. Ken did a great job relaying 3 stations that I could see, but not copy. His assistance kept ck-in flowing smoothly.

Propagation continues to be fascinating… stations south/southeast (CA/AZ/NV) were strong for a change and some stations east/southeast (ID/UT) were weak. The test images indicate conditions for UT and CA at the beginning of the net:

RX: W1EEP UT
RX: KB6NN CA

Even in tough conditions, the net ran smoothly. Three stations changed their status: active to IN&OUT and IN&OUT to active. Two stations checked-in following the FLAMP exercise. Each net presents different challenges in propagation, station, computer, or FLDIGI itself. We’re getting good at managing these challenges. It’s very satisfying to be part of this team. We appreciate your attention and focus and your practice of good digital netiquette.

Thanks for taking time to practice with us tonight. Next week Steve K6ETA and Jaye KE6SLS will demonstrate Off-Frequency Traffic.

We look forward to working with you again soon.
73,
Mindy W7ZAP

We continue considering avenues for keeping net sessions to a reasonable length w/o compromising training and practice. The net gets longer as participation increases. Practice traffic (text/images) are important for practice and can also limit practice. Our goal is to provide the most practice practical in a reasonable amount of time. We’ve always encouraged interesting and relevant messages. They keep practice from becoming boring.

You can help us maximize training and practice by keeping practice traffic to a minute or so. B/W images are useful when TX time is short; they are good indications of band condx. Our b/w signal-evaluation image (ORCA Logo) takes 30sec. My b/w Avatar takes 18sec. Small b/w images provide useful propagation information. Let’s shoot for 30sec b/w images. We’re trying to reduce practice-traffic TX time. It’s important to consider our colleagues, waiting out a long transmission that prints too blurry to parse. Occasional longer text files with EMCOMM relevance are still welcome. Brad WA7HHE is our poster boy for digesting EMCOMM articles into a summary and providing a follow-up link.

TX Time: 30 seconds
TX Time: 18 seconds

ANNOUNCEMENTS 19/March/2019

Tonight’s FLAMP exercise distributes the file, ‘ex110.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/
FLAMP exercise. If you complete the optional exercise, send that file to NCS
in the Traffic round tonight or any net.

The 30MDG Digital Weekend didn’t work out for Doug K7KY. He tried a couple
times both days w/o contact. Although our doublets tune 30m easily, we don’t
know what their patterns look like; probably lots of spikes and nulls. We hope
you had better results. 30m is a very unique band. How did you do?

Starting the net an hour early is working better than our old time for most
Ops. DST gave another little boost, so we’ll stay with the new start time.

We’d like to run another off-freq traffic exercise in next week’s Traffic
Round. Let us know if you’d like to help. It’s little different than your
usual participation in the Traffic round and excellent preparation for
working traffic and emergency nets.

I am trying a new inverted L antenna. It is about half vertical and half horizontal.
I don’t have any radials so I am feeding it against a chain link fence. Hi HI
Very pleased with the performance so far.
Able to copy almost everyone. Test image very good — just a little noise.
Your signal is about s9 + 20 — s/n up to +14 very good copy
Good copy on W1EEP from Pine Valley — wonder why he couldn’t copy all the blocks???
Fred’s signal looks like an echo or reverb or something strange

Thanks for the practice

In a couple of weeks we hope to be doing a ECOMM exercise with our South West Utah Health Department connecting 5 hospitals together via amateur radio and also an exercise for the Great Utah Shake Out.

Wanted to let our dual NCS stations know how much their effort and the excellent training is very much appreciated on this end, thankyou. < WA7HHE

I had a good time tonight, glad I learned what to do for next relay and would like to try that next time I’m on. The band appears to be great between AZ and CA/OR now, much better signals for the last 45 minutes as compared to the initial which was about 90% copy. Thank you to NCS for running such a clean net and training us. I see this as the gold standard of digital nets. IF anyone is using an FT857 and signalink would love some input on your settings for one of my local digital guys having problems. Email me on QRZ if possible. W7ZAP + 5dB s/n. W1EEP+7dB, sorry didn’t monitor the rest. 73’s and good night.

Once again, color images don’t do well in poor band condx. We can run two brief traffic evolutions in the 3+ minutes it take to send a blury color image. Our grayscale logo takes 30sec and would provide the same practice in 1/6th time. Situational can be practiced everywhere…

It’s important to keep the overall net in mind. Everyone is busy these days and some Ops are in a different time zone. We try to keep the net brisk and brief for everyone benefit. Thanks for helping us on busy net nights.

Thanks for all the flowers. Gold Standard! Our headphones are getting tight… btn < K7KY
