We mis-assessed band condx tonight. They were very encouraging to those who enjoy QRP. Some Signal Evaluation images are near pixel perfect, even after traveling to Montana. Check out tonight’s Signal Evaluation images below. It might have been an 80m QRP evening. The FLAMP Exercise surprised us with 6 of 8 stations CONFIRMING on the first pass in THOR-50×1. Bruno KG7VVN relayed two FILL blocks in MFSK-64 to CONFIRM the remaining two stations. The FLAMP Exercise often provides an opportunity for FILL relays, increasing our practice with NBEMS tools and tactics.

Three of the eight participants answered the Optional Exercise question correctly. We weren’t surprised. The bulk of ORCA DIGITAL NET training is by example. Incoming Ops learn digital net protocols and traffic-handling by observation and emulation. We augment this training technique with more topical help off-air with email and telephone support for newer Ops. Tonight’s CONTACT question would not be answered by observing ORCA sessions. We’re too busy for mid-net CONTACTS. ORCA is tightly structured and managed to provide as much practice possible in the time available. We’re focused on showcasing correct Directed digital net protocols simultaneous with digital traffic-handling. Following practice, the Comment round is open to all topics relevant to our membership and the logical time for CONTACT requests.

If you wish to CONTACT another member directly, wait for the Comment round. NCS will ask you to call your station and move off freq. This enables CONTACT w/o hindering net-flow. Before calling NCS, select a freq for meeting your CONTACT. When you want to pass a very brief message; tell NCS you will be quick. NCS may permit CONTACT on the net-freq. You may simply want to connect with another member following the net. This can take less than a minute of net time.

Welcome back to Kai N6ZZO in Eureka,CA. ORCA has changed significantly since his last ck-in. Howard KB6NN also checked in tonight from Eureka. Howard has been with us since nearly the beginning. We appreciate his support. Thanks to Brad WA7HHE for directing our attention to Keith WA0TJT’s QRZ.com page. Keith has been working this hobby for 54yrs, since he was 15yrs old. He’s certainly covered a lot of Amateur bases. Keith is another very remarkable radio Operator currently supporting ORCA DIGITAL NET. It’s a honor to have Keith and so many other equally knowledgeable and skilled radio Operators on our roster.

David N2RSN made the following request during Comments:
“Hello all, Need some help from someone that has experience setting up a FTdx3000 with FLdigi, I cannot get my XYL’s rig working She is Terry, N2RSI. If Help is available please contact: n2rsn@arrl.net”
If you can help David & Terry configure an FTDX-3000 for digital operations, please contact David by email. TU

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight’s FLAMP Exercise distributes the file, ‘ex204.txt’, an FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLAMP exercise.
If you complete the OPTIONAL exercise within, send that file to NCS in the Traffic round
with FLAMP.

ORCA DIGITAL NET has only been cancelled once prior to last Tuesday. We deeply appreciate
your understanding and concern. It was humbling and heartening to hear from so many of our
radio friends and colleagues. We deeply appreciate your support. Our family is recovering and
adjusting to our new reality.

Our last 2020 session and the first session of 2021 had textbook check-ins. The final session
in 2020 logged 37 Ops. There was not one double or coattail. Considering current band condx,
it’s even more remarkable. Thanks for paying close attention and helping us manage the net.

If you would like an ORCA DIGITAL NET decal, the same image we send twice each session, send
a SASE to: ORCA DIGITAL NET, 17029 Ferry Creek Heights, Brookings,OR 97415. These are vinyl
sun-safe decals for external surfaces. When applied to cups, manufacturer claims they’ll survive
hand washing and some dishwashers.

Thanks for emailing the ORIGINAL Signal Evaluation images to: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com
(another file location & manipulation exercise)

Of the more than 6 million people in the U.S. who have received COVID-19 vaccines, at least 29 have suffered anaphylaxis, a severe and dangerous reaction that can

constrict airways and send the body into shock.

If you have had severe reactions to previous vaccinations advise those giving you your Covid shot and ask if they have an EpiPen available.

This Amateur Radio Operator will receive his second dose in just a couple of weeks. The chances of getting COVID-19 are much higher.

Our Five County Health Department has run out of their supply of Covid Vaccine and their website has Crashed due to all of people in the area attempting to schedule a

vaccination time. Waiting for supplies to replenish. Should get more information tomorrow during our quarterly Health department meeting and LEPC meetings. Wishing

everyone well from Southern Utah. Brad

On a cheerier note, it has been a marathon moving, but we are finally settled in here in beautiful Mt Shasta, CA! The 80M dipole is up at about 75 feet, which should

NCS began fading as we neared 8pm tonight, yet good copy still so far. Lots of signals both below and above the water fall tonight. Good question tonight. A station

will request NCS to be able to contact another station and wait for ncs to direct that QSO either on freq or off freq. N6ZZO reports good copy tonight, FLamp working

like a charm! Heard one of our members ID on voice on this frequency. I want to remind all that this is a digital segment and SSB isn’t authorized for US hams in

CONUS.

Parts of Humboldt no longer have access to 911! telco’s are working on it. Hmmmmmm . . Humboldt is back in the purple tier, 131 cases reported since Friday :(
Hope Steve k6eta is able to resume hamming ASAP. Can’ wait to hear first signals from new QTH! Here’s to Bruce kb7vx and his crazy work schedule! I hope he is doing

ORCA < K7KY Thank you so much for your thoughts and well wishes. It means a lot.

ORCA rosters are creeping up slowly. As participation increases, we’ll have to further limit the number of stations participating in the FLAMP Exercise. Currently we

can accommodate 10 Ops, but we’re changing that to 8 stations. Currently, 10 ORCA Ops have a permenant * assigned. They can ck-in with the * and skip the FLAMP

Exercise. When we have too many Ops for the Exercise, we ask one or more of these stations to stand down and leave space for newer Ops.

Even when you ck-in QNX, you should be working the Exercise w/o NCS interaction. You will get nearly as much practice by working alone. After three passes, most

stations will CONFIRM the file, no matter their not talking w/NCS. Monitoring stations can CONFIRM or FILL Exercise files directly following net when we hold a brief

session for Monitors.

Welcome back to Kai N6ZZO in Eureka,CA. We’ll ask Kai to monitor a couple sessions to catch up with net changes since his last ck-in.

Monitoring Stations: Don’t forget our Monitor’s Session directly after closing. We’ll take comments/questions and FILL incomplete Exercise files and CONFIRM the

Optional Exercise.

I didn’t have time to read anyones Exercise answers tonite. On a directed net, you must have NCS permission to CONTACT another net station. Usually, you just send,

‘CONTACT K7KY’. NCS may or may not permit this during net. Some may ask if you’ll be brief and permit. ORCA’s too busy for CONTACTS.

Good to hear Steve K6ETA is now home in Mt Shasta,CA, and has an 80m dipole @ 75′. I think the trees like supporting Amateurs!

Tonight was another textbook ck-in. Thanks for helping us manage the net.
