Another exciting evening on 80m . Long band, no short skip again tonight, and lots of QSB. It a good thing ORCA stations are widespread; we need the distant stations to relay the locals. This may be a warm-up for 2018. We should be very good at relays by 2019. My dream of checking Dave W1HKJ into ORCA faded with the band. It was always a long shot. Another day, maybe.

Check-in was a good indication of what was in store for the net. I could not copy a number of stations. Mindy was doing much better than I and collected those I couldn’t print. We just upgraded Mindy’s antenna and it worked much better than mine. We operated like a NCS tag-team during check-in.

The plan to pass traffic off-freq also fell to band condx. We’ll try it again, 3rd week next month. The stations ready to pass off-freq traffic were too proximate for condx. Mindy suggested we ask a strong station to relay the roster. Ken KR7KR resent the roster from UT. This helped stations having difficulty copying NCS. Thanks to Brad WA7HHE and Ken KR7KR for help with relays and FLAMP fills. NCS was a multi-Op endeavor tonight. This email from Jaye KE6SLS who could not hear NCS:
…………..

okay, was going to shut down at 7:40 if no one could hear me, but I just
copied kr7kr roster relay.

………………

If I missed checking you in or recognizing you during net, I’m sorry. The band was difficult and trashed my off-freq-traffic plan. I had more difficulty copying stations tonight than ever before. I hope this is not a harbinger of condx in 2018. I’m already missing our earlier days of perfect copy. Just a couple months ago, we had passed the FLAMP exercise when I realized I was still at 5w, our warm-up power, and everyone copied me.

Here’s tonight’s images:

We enjoyed working with you tonight. A tough band makes for realistic practice, even though it’s frustrating. We wish you a pleasant Christmas. We’ll be here on the 26th . If you’re not too busy with holiday events, check in and pass a little traffic with us.

ORCA ANNOUNCEMENTS 19 December 2017

Another ORCA Founder becomes SILENT KEY: Fred Wagner AD6FC,

passed away in his sleep on December 14, 2017. Fred was also

President of the Del Norte ARC for longer than we can remember.

Please keep his wife, family, and friends in your thoughts and

prayers.

Let’s listen for Dave W1HKJ tonight. He’s going to try checking in from

ALabama. He may need a relay. I hope he’ll get a chance to see how well

FLDIGI works for a dedicated digital-traffic team.

Tonight’s Optional FLAMP exercise distributes ‘ex51.txt’, an FLMSG

/FLAMP exercise using the FLMSG ICS-213 form. Complete the instructions

and send the file to NCS during TRAFFIC round using FLAMP, or send

your own practice traffic or QRU.

OFF-NET-FREQ TRAFFIC PRACTICE, 3rd Week, Monthly:

Beginning tonight, and the 3rd Tues each month, a couple stations will

leave the net and pass their traffic on another frequency. Otherwise,

Traffic practice round will be as usual. We’ll rotate the off-freq senders

so everyone has an opportunity over time.

Following ck-in, I’ll call for stations with ‘Traffic-to-List’. That call

is for station wishing to send their traffic to another station off the net

freq. We’ll start with two stations and see how our time goes. I’ll send

them off-freq to pass their traffic and return to net. We’ll learn and

practice the process of leaving and returning to net.

Net Report posted as soon as we can…

:mg:1045 Community-based preparedness pleešceaow all to prepare for and respond to anticipated disruptions and potential hazards following a disaster. As individuals, we can prepare our homes and families to cope during that critical period. Through preevent planning, neighborhoods and worksites can also work together to help reduce injuries, loss of lives, and property damage. Neighborhood preparedness will enhance the ability of individuals and neighborhoods to reduce their emergency needs and to manage their existing resources until professional assistance becomes available. Studies of behavior following disasters have shown that groups working together in the disaster period perform more effectively if there has been prior planning and training for disaster response. These studies also show that organiassroots efforts may be more successful if they are woven into the social and political fabric of the community ? neighborhood associations, schools, worF eees, places of worship, and other existing organizations.
