Ck-In was lighter than usual tonight with 24 stations on the Log. Ck-in went smoothly with 92% using ORCA Ck-In Protocol. We’re very close to 100% of regulars using ORCA Protocol. Even with 8 stations in the NBEMS Exercise we wrapped the net in 48min. We’re really pleased with our time-saving results. Early last year, our nets were running up to 1.5hr and we began looking for ways to reduce net time without sacrificing content. Many ORCA Ops still work regular hours and some are 1 & 2 time zones away. We try to pack as much useful practice into an hour as we can.

We’ve compressed the net by paying attention to each net event with an eye to trim out unnecessary activity. We’ve been saving time everywhere we can. The Monitor’s Session was a big help in shortening the net. Now, incoming stations can learn the NBEMS Exercises as Monitor’s and check their work directly after the main net.

Our recent focus on Ck-In Protocol is part of refining net operations to save time. Ck-In is our most intense net-event; we’ve minimized Ck-In Protocol to save time. Thanks for following Protocols and keeping communications brief and concise.

Eight stations signed up for the Basic NBEMS Exercise and all but one CONFIRMED. Here at NCS, the Exercise was anything but typical. Doug’s station choked mid-Exercise. Mindy was prepared and quickly took over. When we practice before each session, we configure our stations exactly the same so we can switch positions seamlessly at any point in the net. It’s the first time we had to switch mid-Exercise. Regular practice is well worth the effort!

The change from 3 Basic and 1-2 Advanced Exercise per month to 2 Basics and 2-3 Advanced Exercises should work better for New and Veteran ORCA Ops. For those already use to working Advanced NBEMS Exercises every session, three Basics per month is way too Easy. Actually, the veterans usually make the Advanced Exercises look easy.

We’re still on course for ORCA members to conduct some of the Basic NBEMS Exercises. Sorting out the instructions has taken more time. While the Exercise isn’t difficult to conduct, getting the instructions clear and concise is more challenging. The Exercise is conducted by Macros. Normally, there’s no need to type. Stations CONFIRMED or needing Fills are logged w/pencil & paper.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tonight we’ll run the last Basic NBEMS Exercise for April. No Traffic Round. Next Month, we’ll revise the ratio between Basic and Advanced Exercises. The first two Tuesdays will have Basic NBEMS Exercises, the remaining 2-3 Tuesdays will have Advanced Exercixes. This will better balance Basic and Advanced Exercises.

Macros are also on tonight’s Agenda. For the Comment Round, please combine your Path Evaluation Macro and Comment Macro in a single transmission. The <VER Tag in your Path Evaluation Macro should be replaced with the Zulu Time Stamp Tag. We sent this Tag in last weeks Net Report. We can’t send it here. It confuses the Macro parser. The Time Stamp will enable us to match your images to the log.

Again tonight, please email the two best images you receive in the Comment Round. This experiment is helping us learn which stations are best heard by the net. This info helps choose the best Relay station.

Here’s an ongoing Macro task. If you don’t already Ck-In by Macro, please begin using our Macro or yours for Ck-In. ORCA Ck-In Macros are available here: http://orcadigitalnet.com/macros/. The ORCA Ck-In Macros set 4 Net Protocols for you automatically with a single Mouse click. Your Ck-In string will be correct and FLDIGI will be LOCKED @ 1500hz. We’ll begin asking incoming stations to use our Ck-In Macros soon after joining the net. For assistance with Macros, email: ncs@orcadigitalnet.com

Implementing ORCA Ck-In Protocol is the first digital-net task for incoming Ops.  Checking in correctly is more important than how you send it, Keyboard or Macro. New stations usually master our simple Ck-In Protocol in a few sessions.

Please see message below from Terry Meissner, Iron County CERT Coordinator. Might mention the presenters speciality in the AirForce was dealing with dirty bombs.  “I will be presenting a short briefing (60 minutes) on Surviving a Radiological or Nuclear event at the Thursday CERT meeting”    I will be bringing sealed sources if any of your folks have Rad meters they want to function check.”  < WA7HHE

Nice work Brad on the macro + Relays tonight. I wonder if the CERT meeting will be posted on YouTube? Would be useful info for a lot of folks. Sure hope to never need it, but would want to know it if I did need it

ORCA NCS< Doug/Mindy, Another great net as always. I do not have the Path Evauation Macro set up yet. Conditions were not so good for me durning checkin tonight. Our Ham Radio Technician Class ended this past Thursday with 16 new Hams getting their Technician Class License. Two upgrading to General and one upgrading to Amateur Extra. Our VE’s used the new electronic testing software and it worked quite well. All 16 new Hams received their call signs in less than 24 hours.  It’s great seeing everyone on the waterfall,  Be safe 73 to all.  W6DLW

Great signal report Lamar… much appreciated!
Yes, block ‘0″ is good to know… it can save an extra TX… I don’t know why FLAMP doesn’t always add it automatically… and if ur filling more than 1 stn… clicking FETCH isn’t useful.

In the last 10 days we have finally started getting some real rainfall. We’re still way below below normal, and still below last years drought levels, but only by about 1”.  Hoping tomorrow’s rainfall will make it over the mountains east of us and put some needed water in the lakes. Yesterday I received 1.27″ worth.  0.10″ today.  Fingers crossed . .

Ubuntu releases their new LTS version on the 21st.  Hoping that will solve my mysterious port audio issues.  Tonight I’m using pulse, but my Monday net I have to use port audio since my other program ties up pulse :|  All in a day I suppose.

The band seems good and also quiet, yet NCS is copying check-ins I couldn’t hear or see.  Even with your noise, your antennas hear amazingly well.

Doug, something is happening with your audio.  It sounds like a cable is coming loose or something and you just disappear.  Our systems can be finicky!

Utah stations are not as strong now.  Hopefully we’ll have a gentler summer season of good propagation.

Stay safe and look for you all ‘down the log’
