Nice to be back to the net after a week of ill health. And, the net ran very nicely tonight in spite of a very noisy band. I copied all stations well, but not all stations copied each other well. Not too unusual, I suppose. We completed the file manipulation exercise we began two weeks ago. These exercises are going so well, I wonder if they’re too simple? Boring? I’m trying to develop exercises that simulate activities related to all aspects of digital traffic. Next week, we can return to our regular routine and add some formal traffic.

The net ran 1.5hr, not bad for 12 check-ins, 11 active participants. Everyone was focused and we got a lot done in that time. A few images in the comment phase indicated how noisy the band was. Ken KR7KR’s color image didn’t do well with the noise at my end, while Ralph WB6SDR’s color image printed pretty true. Ken’s from UT, Ralph’s from CA. Keep TX time in mind when choosing images.

We can pass some simple formal traffic next week with the RadioGram form. I’ll send a RadioGram to someone who can be reached by an ORCA Op. You can too if you like. RadioGram is one of the easier forms to complete. If you’re looking around for next week’s traffic, consider sending a RadioGram.

If you’d like to call a daytime ORCA net, day/time your choice, let me know. There’s enough interest to make it worthwhile, I think. It would broaden our experience with bands and modes. The net could be as brief as your time and patience.

Thanks for your participation. We’re becoming familiar with many of the facets of digital traffic handling. I really enjoy working with you. Again, don’t fret about mistakes. This is the place to experiment and mistakes are expected. Others may also learn from your mistake. I hope to see you all next Tuesday evening. 73 Doug K7KY

ORCA Announcements 18/oct/16

Thank you, Jaye KE6SLS NCS/Alt, for calling the net last week. I was down with a sinus

infection and Mindy was away. I do have Jaye’s net log and will post the net report

when I can. Even a short illness can put a big ding in my homestead routines and leave

me catching up for days after. With Mindy away, I’ve much less time free for radio.

Tonight we’ll complete the file manipulation exercise we began two weeks ago.

The FLMSG file was sent in FLAMP in the weekly FLAMP exercise the last two nets. I’ll

send it again tonight. It’s an FLMSG-Form file you will open in FLMSG, Edit, Rename,

Save, and resend in FLAMP during the Traffic round. In LInux, find FLAMP messages from

the top menu, ‘FILE/FOLDERS’, and ‘ICS/MESSAGES’. Maybe the same in Win, I’m not sure.

This exercise simulates receiving an HF relay of a FLMSG file seeking a report of

conditions. You will edit it in FLMSG and resend it in FLAMP where it can be further

relayed locally in FLMSG.

Remember: You can RELAY fill BLOCKS from FLAMP’s RX tab using the

FETCH and RELAY buttons. If FLAMP does not FETCH the needed BLOCKS,

you can type them into the RELAY window. Otherwise, it will send the

complete file.

:mg:827 The Great California Shakeout is Thursday, November 20th, at 1020L.

The Humboldt County Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Group will be meeting on Thursday, October 20th at 1900L at the

Eureka downtown fie ton to discuss the upcoming Eel River Valley earthquake drill. The amateur radio community has been asked to

participate in this event by activating multiple fire stations and the County EOC. This is a great opportunity for us. I am trying to get the

stations set up ahead of time. The Bridgeville station is on the list of stations to be activated. This will require some dedication from a HAM

operator as there is travel involved. The event will last for at least 4 hours starting at 0900L on Saturday, November 5th.

Send any bulletins or announcements for the Eureka Emergency VHF Net to wa6nbg@yahoo.com.

:mg:647 Area amateur radio operators participated in the South West Utah five county Ecomm radio drill Tuesday October 18th.

Radio Amateurs from Washington, Iron, Garfield, Kane and Beaver counties each took county check in’s and then tested various frequenies

to the South West Health Department located in St. George Utah. Cedar City radio operators at the Cedar City Hospital passed their check

in list via digital on 40 meters.

The Ecomm drill turned out to be a good training exercise. The Rainbow Canyons Amateur Radio Group suprised other digital operators

with showing off the call in the waterfall learned from participating on the ORCA net.

WA7HHE Tnx Brad ur message reminds me that we Mindy & I often take part in drills from other counties and states… if you’re running a

local drill and would like stations from other areas to participate, our net would be a good place to look for digital Ops to participate with

you.. It make a good impression on county and state officials when we include stations from out of the area sometimes…. just a thought
